3NT for me. Partner with 4-6 pts won't be bidding game so you have to bid it yourself.

After Michael's...
effervesce replied to Hanoi5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Did people read the part "Partner has hearts and clubs and the lenght of these suits plus the honors in them (A, K or Q) should add 14. " That makes 5♦ have a good chance of making. -
3♥. The hand has great playing strength - aces are undervalued under the standard count and the hand is 6-4. Don't think this is close.
-
Add my vote for 6KCB.
-
3♠ first choice, 4♥ second. 3♠ allows 3NT to stay in the picture, and shows your values. 4♥ will often be the best spot as partner will usually have a good suit to overcall 3♥ opposite a passed hand.

5♥. You only have one certain defensive trick against 5♦X, and 5♥ on most hands partner has rates to be either a good sac or will make. -
Pass.

No Lebensohl here? No pick-a-minor 2NT here?
-
I prefer X (takeout) - if partner bids a suit, I'd happily splinter. Yes, it has the downside of partner sometimes passing for penalties where you'd prefer to have bid game instead, but it also has the upside of finding the minor suit slams.

3730 wrong again?
effervesce replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I'm calling only 3♥. If I was in 1st or 3rd seat at these colors I'd bid 4♥ - however, in 2nd seat I'd rather not preempt partner as much-he should know I usually have very constructive preempts in 2nd seat. Like others have mentioned, the 3730 shape rather than 0733 shape tilts it into bidding only 3♥ for me - it makes it that much less likely they can make 4♠, so the usual preempt benefits of trying to preempt them bidding game is less likely on this particular hand. -
3♣.

I remember this hand. You have the auction slightly wrong- north was dealer, and EW vul NS NV. This changes things considerably. Given that east had originally passed, playing weak/strong michaels is (in my opinion-especially at unfavorable vul and in this seat) a not-so good idea. Having a weak option after partner is a passed hand is just simply advertising your distribution for the opponents who will almost certainly declare the hand. At unfav vul I think that michaels should be quite good-especially since a 2S michaels bid forces to the three level. Opening hand+ strength would seem typical. So despite me and partner technically playing 'weak/strong' michaels, this is a clearcut michaels bid in my opinion-you will pass partner's probable 3C/3H bid.

LOL? ROFLMAO.
-
4♦. The hand is simply too good for a favorable vul 3♦.

With 3=7=0=3 and 3♥ in as ♦? :) No, I was serious lol It's their style and they believe in it pretty firmly. They believe in getting bad boards firmly? Wow! :D I think I know the pair andy's talking about- it's all about whether the hand 'looks no-trumpy' to them. Kx KJxxxxx Kx AQ might be an example. (Honors in doubleton suits, etc). 7-2-2-2's often play better in NT than in a suit.

balance on a 4 count??

Csaba's not Australian. -
The problem with 5♦ is that partner is not marked with spade shortage since the spades were not raised. I'm a 3NT bidder too- 5m is asking too much of partner's hand.

Your preference

Ditto Justin. If the opps raise hearts, its easier to make a takeout double later than show your 5th spade if you double first. -
How long have you been playing?
effervesce replied to jillybean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Four years for me. -
3♠ for me.

Stupid contract.

If the same player has QJ of clubs, they can get squeezed. For example, if east has them, play off the top spades and top clubs, and upon cashing the diamonds ending in dummy east will get squeezed. If west has QJ clubs, play top spades and top clubs, and upon cashing the hearts west gets squeezed. However, if the honors are split and both guarded, there is no squeeze. -
LOL Geez, rlol, if ur gonna comment at least explain why. If partner reopens with an X, aren't you worried about missing a possible slam? If you pass and partner reopens with a X, how many do you expect them to go down? 3? Then 'only' having game is but a small loss. The problem is, how often if they go down 3 or 4 will you have missed a slam ? And how often will they only go down 1 or 2? True, partner is a passed hand, but it's not impossible. Partner, having passed already though, will find it hard pressed to reopen with a X on alot of hands with some points. Unless your point is that we're unlikely to make game if partner reopens with a X and doesn't have 4 hearts. Or suggesting that 1♠ all pass is the most likely place to play, and better than us playing the hand.
-
The point of passing is? If partner doubles, surely you arent sitting for pen with those crap pips - would you bid 3NT? Partner wouldnt expect a 17 count to have a hand that would pass yet not pass a reopening X for pen.

If I had to bid, I'd bid a 'do what's right' double, not bid 3♥. The problem with bidding 3♥ is you are not certain the opps have an 8 card fit. If they do, then probably 2♥ and 2♠ both make, and 3♥-1 would be par. If they have a 7 card fit, then you got robbed of 2♥= to a likely 2♠-1. If partner has 4 spades, 2♠X is probably the place to be. If he has 3 he can bid 3♥. I am passing though.
