  1. It's like a 5532 distribution in bridge...
  2. I agree with the people who say the atmosphere drives more noobs away than the system regulations. I have personally seen this in my country. I have also witnessed pro's taking care of their clients by raising hell to some conventions or systems. But that didn't drive anyone away. I also think rubber bridge should be more publicized and promoted, and right now I'm thinking the reason this is not done is because of money reasons. But just imagine 4 beginners playing 3 Chicago Rubbers and having one winner at the end. Picture them agreeing on the system the four would play, which might include the Minotaur's 2♦ opening or whatever they fancy. That I think would be more fun than having to pay to play a tournament where Mrs. Smith will complain about your looks, ideas, behaviour, system or card play technique. I think this should give some food for thought to organizers and teachers... Finally I will give my advice one more time: Bridge needs all the promotion it can get, and probably more. Anything goes, do you remember how Ely Culbertson used the bridge murder case to his advantage? We could use some of that, too. (I'm not telling anyone to kill his/her spouse in the name of bridge but some stuff like this has already happened and could be used). What about making a bridge movie (not the ones in Bridge World though)? Getting sitcoms and series characters to play bridge (how come Grissom from CSI doesn't play?), giving things away (the US took two teams to Istanbul, wouldn't it have been nice to get a third team of noobs who complied with certain demands? like taking x amount of classes and playing y amount of tourneys and getting z results?), how many teachers, parents of teachers, grandparents of teachers play bridge? Why don't they try to promote bridge in their schools, highschools and/or universities? My 2 cents...
  3. Yester-night I played 24 boards in a team event and made 2 really bad decisions: ♠Axx ♥K98x ♦T9x ♣J6x 1♠ 2NT 3♣ Pa 3♠ Pa Pa ??? I couldn't refrain myself and bid 4♣, -500. ♠9x ♥AK87 ♦A8xx ♣Qxx 2♦ Pa 2♠ 3♣ Pa Pa ??? I bid 3♠ and went one off when 3♣ shouldn't make either. Do I apply shock-therapy? What's my solution?
  4. I thought my hand was worth the 3♦ effort. Partner is supposed to be short in spades (and I have the Ace!) and he might have the ♥A or it might be with the overcaller and so he should be able to ruff at least one heart in ly hand. All in all this calls for a little raise.
  5. 1♥-2NT 4♥-5♣ 5♥-6♦!!! ??? With: ♠Ax ♥QTxxx ♦Kxx ♣QJx
  6. 1♥-2NT 4♥ (minimum, no sing or void) Now what?
  7. I'm not ssure about vulnerability but you get: ♠KJx ♥AJxxxxx ♦A ♣AK Your partner OPENS 1♥.
  8. Did you say thin slam? More like European-fashion-model-slam!
  9. I voted maybe 'cause it depends on how things are done and to whom and you could be very offensive withouth apparently looking so or without meaning it.
  10. That is true but I think the bridge 'movie' suggestion is also important. All games have had a movie depicting the life of players (pool, poker, you name it) and the way it is played in tourneys. And also on TV, there was a CSI case of a Scrabble player killed with some letter pieces into his mouth, what about a bridge murde? those are more interesting.
  11. We've lost that kid... Next step: prohibit career day in schools unless parents know who's going and approve the speech. Next step is probably checking teacher's speeches/classes before giving them to the kids... Don't get me wrong, I know parents should have a say at what goes on in their kids education but they should be as concerned about what they're teaching the kids themselves. If you talk to your kid and educate him/her well there shouldn't be any worry about what they hear outside as you would surely correct it ASAP.
  12. Red vs. White: Pa-Pa-1♣-3♠ Pa-Pa-??? You hold: ♠A ♥Axx ♦AKJx ♣J87xx What do you do? Do regret opening 1♣ instead of 1♦ now?
  13. You get: ♠Kx ♥KQxx ♦Jxx ♣Kxxx Your partner opens 1♠ after the dealer passes, what's your bid?
  14. Well, before I post the magazines we have (and prices) I'm gonna post what I don't have so that maybe some people can 'swap' me some. I have everything from October 1962 till today (plus some from 195x), but I need: June '88 November '92 October '98 October '99 January '00 March, April, May '00 September '00 January, February '05 April '05 September, October '05 The whole 2006 January, February '07 February '08 April '08 March '09 31 issues. Anyone interested in selling some?
  15. I've been organizing our Federation's library and got several copies of the same Bridge World magazines. As I guess we need only 1 or 2 copies I was thinking I might sell them to the BW (they sell old magazines so maybe they could do something to them), but they're not buying at the time. Any of you interested? Or maybe you can point in a direction Ithat could help me... I might even change them for books (by the way we have some books we might want to get rid from, like Charles Goren's Precision System which we have some ten copies of).
  16. I'd prefer 2 if it comes to deciding between 2 and 4.
  17. http://www.spanisharts.com/history/del_impres_s.XX/arte_sXX/imagenes/dali_memoria.jpg Although: http://www.chem.ucla.edu/~ltfang/ta/chem110b/scream.jpg Is fine, too.
  18. How can North be to blame? Unless Pass shows a void or something.
  19. I think I do, though I'm Venezuelan and we haven't done that either. Now, why are New Zelanders Kiwis?
