  1. East-West argue that their direct actions over a weak bid (i.e. what 3♣ was to West) are VERY strong while they have no agreement (west says it should be weak, east says it should be shapy). Could this change the ruling? I mean, west was expecting some kind of powerhouse (14+?) in east's hand...
  2. [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sj542hakq976dca86&w=sq876ht532dkj9c94&e=skt93h8dq2ckqjt72&s=sahj4dat876543c53]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] In a butler tournament with screens the bidding goes: 2♥ 3♣ 3♦ Pa 3♥ Pa 4♦ Pa 4♥ Pa Pa X Pa Pa Pa On one side of the screen 2♥ was alerted by North as Flannery (5+♥'s and 4♠, 11-15) and on the other as Muidenbergh (spl?, 5♥'s, 4x's or more in a minor). East complained later that he doubled on misinformation. The system card says they play Muidenberg so East was misinformed but not West (who doubled). What shall the Director do?
  3. They're red and you're white. You receive this beauty: ♠Q876 ♥T532 ♦KJ9 ♣94 The tray comes with the following bids: 2♥ 3♣... And your screenmate alerts you that 2♥ shows hearts+a minor at least 5-4 but could even be 5-6. It goes on: ...3♦ Pa And it comes back: 3♥ Pa... Your screenmate thinks a bit and then: ...4♦ Pa And back again: 4♥ Pa... Your screenmate passes and you... 2♥ 3♣ 3♦ Pa 3♥ Pa 4♦ Pa 4♥ Pa Pa ??? Your partner's 3♣ shows at least opening values. You might have asked what 3♦ or 4♦ or 3♥ or 4♥ mean, but I don't know yet if you did or what answer you got. You didn't ask much, just about 3♦ and were told it was natural.
  4. Just play low slowly obv That wasn't funny, he might think you mean it. This is not dominoes. I play the Queen in all the examples except Qx or JTx where I'd play small. If I'm playing UDCA I would probably play the Ten in the last one. Bidding, contract, etc are very relevant: playing the Queen under partner's Ace asks him to underlead the King next so if I'm not interested in such a thing I shouldn't play the Queen.
  5. [hv=d=e&v=n&n=sqj3hj75dk2ckq754&w=sat54hak9dt83c932&e=s976h632da9764cj8&s=sk82hqt84dqj5cat6]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] This is the complete hand. My partner didn't want to open his 12-count either so we got 0 instead of the 600 that everyone got in 3NT. How would you divide the fault here?
  6. If they did it in a galaxy far away a long time ago, why wouldn't we?
  7. Red vs White, after three passes you're looking at: ♠QJx ♥Jxx ♦Kx ♣KQxxx What's your call? It's a butler tournament if you need to know...
  8. I thought programs like Jack would make plays like the one in: http://thegargoylechronicles.blogspot.com/...0/board-30.html
  9. I didn't know Bill Gates partly owned BBO.
  10. Either black queen instead of Q of Diamonds and I'd double.
  11. Hm, the bidding was wrong. It actually went: 3♥ X 4♥ 4♠ 5♥ ???
  12. You hold: ♠KJ ♥Jx ♦AKQT4 ♣K532 RHO opens 3♥. What would you do after: 3♥ X 4♥ 4♠ Pa ???
  13. I'd bid 2♦ with both. I prefer using 2NT with a balanced hand and splinter with a weaker hand.
  14. The fact that computers are used for certain tournaments wouldn't mean that F2F bridge will be over. The only tourments which should be played this way should be trials, world competitions, the most important stuff. I don't think you can tell mr and mrs Wallace to go to different rooms and sit at computers which they might not know how to handle. But a world master (or an aspiring player) could do it just because it's the rule. You could even add some sort of set up where you see your opponents but not your partner.
  15. I thought Gambling was a really nice convention. Of course it's important to have agreements on how to follow (Pass/correct, asking for shortness and how to respond, etc). Also at least AKQ, AK eighth might not be 8 tricks.
  16. I remember I was playing with this student once and I led an Ace (from AK) against a trump contract. We usually show attitude in this situation, even in this case when dummy shows a doubleton (and has trumps); you can overruff dummy if you have some high or semi-high trumps and a doubleton in the suit yourself, you guys know the situation. So I lead the Ace and receive an encouraging card from partner so I continue with the King...AND NOW THE STUDENT STOPS TO THINK!!! I was so ?/&% off that I did what I think is correct, I continued the suit and gave away a trick. After the hand was finished I said, 'Sorry I thought you had a doubleton'. Worse still, another student who was watching the whole thing said: 'how can he have a doubleton if he thought for such a long time!'... Teaching ethics is not easy. Using UI is probably 'natural'.
  17. I'd say South. That ♦Q is worth millions.
  18. I received a trump lead! Come on I'm not that bad...
  19. After reading the OP I thought of this conversation between the highest ranking Republicans: - So the media is interfering with our war and interests, what shall we do about it? - Hm, we should probably close some news channels like CNN. - Come on! That's outrageous, they'd say we're like Chavez or something. - You're right, I'll tell you what, why don't we make the Democrats do it for us. - Hm, that's very interesting, how'd we do that. - Well first of all we let the black guy win the election... And I guess you can complete the conversation from that point.
  20. I found myself in this situation: [hv=n=sk9xxxhkt9xxxdxxc&s=saqjhdajxxxcqjt8x]133|200|[/hv] Bidding had been: 1♣ - 2♦ - X - 4♠ Pa Pa Pa I received a trump lead (which I expected, sort of) and won in my hand, played ♣Q covered and ruffed at the table, heart ruff, ♣J covered and ruffed at the table, heart ruff (♥J from West), ♣T on which a diamond is thrown from the table and club ruff (clubs were 4-4). I played the last trump and found West was 4-4 in the black suits and thought I was going down 1 (all this time I had thought East held hearts hence his double, which I thought showed penalty in one of my partner's suit). Anyway, I now led a diamond to my Ace and the last club (you never know when the opponents will give you a freebie...), West ruffed and played the ♥Q, which I covered on the table...winning the trick! The double of 2♦ showed diamonds!
  21. ♥KJxxx doesn't call for a double of 2♥?
  22. [hv=n=sak7642hat4dajc75&s=sqj9hq965dkq7cak8]133|200|[/hv] You have this bidding sequence: 1NT Pa 2♥ Pa 2♠ Pa 4♦ Pa 5♣ Pa 6♠ Pa Pa Pa And receive a ♥8 lead, on which you play the ♥4 from dummy...
  23. All white, it goes: 1♦ Pa 1♥ ??? You hold: ♠KJ95432 ♥T73 ♦--- ♣T53 What's your bid?
