Why would responder bid 2♦ on this holding?
-
I think with 13-14 balanced, I can quite easily find either: 1) a raise of partners suit or 2) a penalty double. I do not understand how you can possibly believe you will be "out of bid" on this holding. I agree with Miguel, 2N should suggest both minors. And this part of your methodology makes no sense at all. If partner had short spades, he would/should have reopened with double initially.

Of course, the obvious solution would be for the insurer's and/or governments to just pay $x million per month up front to the local Pirates Benevolence Fund, in exchange for no more hijackings. :) (Any semblance between this and a real solution is purely a figment of your imagination.)

I think 3S is quite appropriate (its close to bidding 4 even) on this auction. I have a 6th spade. I have 1st round control in both of their suits, along with 2nd round control in one of them. Partner has shown some values and presumably, at least 3 spades. Partner should also be short(ish) in hearts. I would expect to lose maybe 2 spades, 1 heart and possibly 2 clubs at most. I think I am unlikely to be doubled in 3S. Unfortunately, I do not know my partner has made an idiotic raise to 2S on the stiff K. I'm just bidding my hand.

No, silly. That would be the Peter principle. ;)

ummm, where's the LOL man when you need him?

1) 3H. 2) Pass. 3) Pass.

Only one? Look closer.

I'm looking for hands with...

I really don't think this is a very good example (It's true you need to win the first trick with the A or K in order to be able to get back to dummy. Whether or not you should make 3N is a different story altogether.) I believe that there are many excellent hands of this nature in "The Most Puzzling Situations In Bridge" by Terence Reese (iirc). Can double check tonight when I get home. -
How close did 2S come to failing?!?

Are you sure you weren't declarer? :) And, btw, how is declarer ever -1? The most he should ever lose is 2H and 2C.....no matter how poorly he plays. (In fact, how did he hold himself to only 8 tricks?) -
Takeout double after a weak 2
bid_em_up replied to bob100147's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I agree. Although, I wouldn't find much fault with a takeout X either. I can. :P -
I'm sure if the President had shown up in drag (as you appear to suggest), we would have heard about it over here. :P
-
It's possible it's been corrected, but now it says that it is 19-20 balanced OR a weak two in a major. I pass and find out which hand opener has. And why is Apollo81 still "Cigarette Tax", while everyone else has changed to a bridge play?
-
I will at least consider passing. Partner is marked with a monster of a hand. One opp opens a weak 2 bid, we are broke, and all third hand can do is further the preempt? Plus, we can be fairly certain that if we bid 3♥, partner will not pass it with his 18+ hcp and his likely diamond void. I actually believe that pass is likely to turn out to be the winning call. However, I am chicken and not taking this risk at IMP's (I would if it was MP). 3♥ for me.

Mike, I ask that you show me anywhere where I have stated my opinion on any of these subjects (the Ark, global warming, evolution). I am amazed that as a lawyer, you are willing to make such assumptions. One day, it will bite you in the ass. All I did is ask a question as to whether or not, if given irrefutable evidence that something such as the Ark existed, would you be willing to reexamine your position? Because, it was not clear (to me) whether you (and others) are the same type of person that you accuse Jimmy of being or not. Someone who is blinded by their beliefs (opinions), no matter what the evidence may say or are you someone who is willing to look objectively at the facts, and then form or change your position. It's easy to say that you will. Actually doing so when confronted with such evidence is more difficult because it affects your core being. So I was asking if, in fact, you actually *would be* willing to change your position when confronted with evidence otherwise, or are you just blowing smoke out of your ass when you say that. And that was all I wanted to know. (For the record, I believe in God, and Jesus Christ. Whether or not the Ark actually existed, I do not know, when they find that Big Boat I asked you about, then I will know with certainty. I believe that evolution occurs, and that global warming is a scientific fact. I do not believe that everything in the Bible (I assume this is the dogma you refer to) is to be taken as the "Absolute Truth", however, I also believe that there is enough basis in history for there to be some element of "Truth" in it as well. It's just a question of whose version of history you are reading.)

Mikeh, jdonn, hrothgar, et. al.: I'm curious if any of you would be willing to change (or at least reconsider) your position if, by some chance, the remains of a big boat that is full of animal droppings was discovered tomorrow? Or when faced with the "facts", if you would continue to maintain your version of it, simply because it is what "you believe to be true". Just something to think about.

Bidding 5N at this point in the auction indicates an interest in seven. So you would not follow up with 5N for any of the following reasons: 1) You know you are missing one keycard already. 2) You have no interest in seven. 3) Having shown 2 keycards and the queen of trumps, its highly unlikely that the 4S bidder has anything else.

What they said. (I changed vilgan's percentages though).

Or partner can hold xx AKQx Ax KQxxx as well, where 6 is essentially cold (along with many other hands). I suspect if you give it a little more consideration that you will likely find that there are more hand types where six will, at least, have some play than there are where it does not (or you go down at the 5 level). I think the hand is worth one try; the question is, which one? We have 3-4 choices, 4S, 4N, 5C, 5H to name a few. The one most likely to assist partner is 5C, so thats my choice. Partner must realize that in order to cuebid 5C, we must have a spade control as well. He's likely looking at all the top hearts, so knows our heart holding is weak, would we really be cuebidding 5C holding two or more dead spades? No. So I will cue 5C, and then respect partners decision over that. If he bids 5H, I pass. jmoo.
