As yet a furthur twist, with one partner I played the following stayman rebids over opener's response 2M - 4M, minimum invite to 3N 2N - May or may not have 4M, "good" invite to 3N. Range on 1N was 12-15, being able to invite at 2 different levels was helpful.
The thing is that 3N will make on MANY layouts where 5♣ doesn't...any non ♥ lead and 3N is virtually cold, and if they allow you to slip a trick with Q♥ (very possible single dummy, esp against GIB), again, you're cold, regardless of the club situation.
What kind of hesitation are we talking about? 5 seconds? 10? 30? While it may not technically be a skip bid, I think this is a situation where it's totally approiate for the player to think for 10 seconds or so before calling, even if he has no intention of bidding. I don't think hesitation suggests X or 5♠ specifically, so I don't think I roll back either action, but again it kinda of depends on the hesitation for me. Not totally sure I'd consider pass an LA here in any case.
3OM as an unknown minimal splinter isn't unusual. When ♠ are trumps opener can sign off in 3♠ with no game interest. Typically either 3N or 4♣ asks for the short
♠ 76 ♥ A6532 ♦ AQJ9 ♣ Q4 ♠ KQT843 ♥ K9 ♦ 6 ♣ AKJ5 S dealt, all vuln at imps 1♠-2♥ 2♠-4♠ 4NT-5♥ (2 without) 6♠ Opening lead was a ♦ one in dummy with the A, now 7 of ♠, 2, K, holding. Cross over to the Q♣ -- 6♠, 5, Q, ....♦. -1
At this vuln 1100 is the worst we can ever go for. They only need to make 6 for 6♠ to be right, and if partner has a stiff any where we down 800 at most which isn't a horrific disaster opp. a vuln game.
