There is at least 3 ways. One is to use 2D as a game try with a long M. 2C-----2D 2M is inv with 4. 1Nt------2D is inv with 5/6 in M or no M. You dont have transfers here. Wich is a big drawback since you dont have a forcing stayman. The 2nd is a bit like ive done. Partner respond 2M to 2C only if hes minmum. So that alll minimum hands and 4-4 fit are found and you stop at 2M, however responder 54-45 cannot be showned. The 3rd wya is Keri style with 4/5 inv. IMO it doesnt really work.

I like to play that 1H----1S 1NT is 12-14 and could be 4S or any bal hand and is NF. But what i like even more is transfer by opener. 1Nt= 4C 2C=4D 2D= 6H 2H=5H+4S not reverse.

If they are vul its obvious that you should keep the penalty X. If they are not vul i still prefer penalty double but I could be convinced otherwise. A quick comparaison for why i think my method is superior to Lionel. 2M = natural the same thing on both side 2D = long D + shorter M (5D+4M, 6D+4M vs D+H) Here knowing that the M is shorter than D is a big gain compared to pinponting H. Its almost impossible to have 24?? or 1327 and play in 2D instead of 2H because opps will bid S anyway. The only problem case is 3433, vs 3451 or 4333 VS 4351 where you would pass 2D instead of playing 2M. Not frequent and not a big deal anyway, The case where you are 3/3 or 2/2 in the reds facing a 54,45 and picking the right suit is important they are 5224,4225, 4333,3335,2335,5332.1336,3226 all these cases you play a sure 5-2 instead of half a time reaching a 4-2 fit 5-3 fits instead of half the time reaching 4-3 fits. For 2C = 5/6C + 4M or both m VS C+H My 2nd suit isnt pinpointed but it allow to show longer clubs. (or both m). The downside is that the advancer cannot show long D over 2C. Again my method make a gain here because the number of hands where picking the right suit outweight the misfits hands where 2D is the best spot. Clear gain for me here (note that by sacrifing the both m in 2C I could keep the 2D Soff) A double is showing a unknown 5M VS showing 4+S. The upside is that the longer M is showned vs no difference between 54/45. Also if they compete my method make it more easy to bid further. (1Nt)-----X-------(2H)---------??? Playing Lionel here with 3S and a balanced hand you might not be tempted to compete. But in mine the confirmation of a 5th S is nice. (1Nt)-----X-------(2S)---------??? here im more likely to compete to 3H (either by trusting the opps our by doubling to show Hearts) (1Nt)-------2D (D+H)-------(2S)----------??? where partner may easily have 5/6 D and only 4H. The downside of my method is that over the X, 2RED isnt to play its pass or correct (2D showing longer D than M and 2H showing both M) so in case of big misfit we will play 2 black in the non-fit instead of 2 red in the advancer one suiter. I think my method make a gain here too but its not convincing. It could be an even case but the 2m cases make it convincing that unless ive made a mistake in my analysis my method is bringing more gains.

any system link on the web ?
benlessard replied to benlessard's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Im mostly looking for systems where 2NT after a transfer is forcing to help make the difference between long M+m or 4M+long m. -

Im trying to find 4 cards transfers ideas on the web and so far i didnt find too much. Any ideas ?

I think Winston signature (quote of H. L. Mencken) fit perfectly here.

1- 4S. I think slam is possible but 4D would be COG rather than a denial cue or a LTTC. I think the chance that we discard H on the club are better than the chance we suffer a H ruff in 4S. 2- 3H show a solid suit in my book (unless its 4M+Lm) and (a very good hand esp if you play namyats) so its a 6 or 7 hand bid so i would RKC and ask for the C king. 5Nt by partner should ask for extras (cannot be PAS here). Ive already showned 2 black cards, with 2K and a Ace 7 is clear so ill bid 6C and he should understand that its the Q. 3- 5C but i think 4S is close. Partner can easily have 6S or a H stop and only 1key. 4-1Nt , even if the H run 1Nt might score better than 2D. 5- 4H We are red so 4H mean we hope to make it facing any 6-8 pts. If partner got 2Key and extras he will move on even without a C control 6- 3C WTP.

Agree 100% Good idea thanks a lot ! Playing the weak NT garbage stayman is not that really useful, imo its marginally better if you can runout before they X you but its no big deal. Plus the D transfer that allow you to play 2D (available at least 80%) is clearly more frequent and useful than GS (not close at all). Same thing for the club soff i dont remember last time it was necessary. Either they bid before you or your club suit inst good enough and you wait for the X and run to 2C. A direct 3C soff would have a preemptive effect but a delayed soff is not really preemptive enough to my taste. As for 2 balanced hand I dont see where we would be at disadvantage compared to regular stayman. If responder has 4M he can transfers in the M and we will be in a better shape because both 2S and 2NT are forcing 1Nt-------2C (reg stayman) 2H--------??? vs.. 1Nt-------2D(transfers) 2H--------2S and 2Nt is forcing (3 level will show 5H) If responder doesnt have M. 1Nt--------??? 2Nt and + are GF denies 6D or 4M. So clubs hands and (31)54 and big bal hands are there. Those who have a complex method based on 2way stayman are probably in a better shape but im not really worried about it relaying balanced hands vs balanced hands is often a dubious proposition anyway.

If you like to play mini than i suggest you to play 10-14. Wich most think its impossible to play but they are 100% wrong. It has given us excellent results. 2C------2D 2M is 4M inv 2D is multi inv. (5M or + or no M) you need all the 3 level for GF hands however because there is no GF stayman nor transfers. Ill check in my last post and post the complete stuff.

maybe a (54)40 ?
-
With a strong 5-5 he will cue bid in a minor(not GF but more foward going than 3S). With a strong 5-4 he should have X and not bid 1Nt. To bid 1Nt with a strong (54)22 is pure nonsense. So the only thing i see is that hes got a good 5-5 but hes got Kx in clubs to protect.

Yep i know Heeman. The difference is that Heeman will play at the 3 level or 2NT when 4-4 M fit and opener is minimum. Also i believe that transfers followed by 3m should be GF (not INV) unless by a passed hand where slam is impossible. 1NT-----2C 2D------??? 2H is better as inv with 5/6H than as a 2nd transfer to S. We are playing a wide NT range so if partner is min i want to play 2H not 2NT/3H. The same reason why i dont like the 3D multi-inv wich make you play 3M. (I like to play the multi inv at 2D in a non-transfers setup a method wich i tought i was the inventor but its in the C & M conventions by M.Lindkvist) Also in my method when opener super accept a transfer he know that responder has 5 or is GF. To super A with KQxx and a dead minimum hand is pointless if partner has 4H inv. You will play 3H for no good reason. With a wide Nt range its important to have INV bids, but for me the INV that really matters are the inv that let you play at 2M, INV that let you play 3m instead of 3NT yield a little profit but inv that let you play 3M instead of 4M are almost worthless at IMPS. 2 or 4 is my motto for majors at imps. Also transfers followed by 2NT GF is a huge gain, it help make the difference between 4M+longer m or 5M+m ---------------------------- an other little thing i dont like about Heeman 1NT------3C is forcing 3D to show 4441 or to soff in 3D You can soff at 2D with 2C (less preemptive i agree) and to use scanian transfers to show 4441 1NT------2D 2H-------3S = 1444 1Nt-----2D(H 4or+) 2H-----2S (4S) 2Nt(no M fit)-----3m (4441 or 4531) With 2Nt a la SCANIAN, 2C followed by 3 something to show D GF and 3m available at the 3 level i should be able to show both minors and C GF hands. Ill sacrifice the 3C Soff wich is an insignificant loss in my book. There is 2 thing im not sure... first is Is 1Nt----2D 2H-----2S could be INV with 4/5H+ 4S or should be GF (im leaning toward GF) second 1NT-----2S = inv with 4S 1NT-----2C----2red------2S = inv with 5 or + S or 1NT-----2S gadget.. 1NT-----2C------2R------2S = inv with 4-5 S (Keri style) and to have to show a 6-7 card suit S inv at the 3. It seems like a huge loss of space to have 2S just to show INV with 4S but since i have enough space for the minors maybe its worth it.

Im pretty sure everybody is going to agree that the range 19-21 and 22-24 make more sense.

2C = asking for 4/5H minimum (almost a puppet to 2D) to show... D transfers Gf or to play Inv with 4H or a long M Inv with no M 2C-----?? 2H minimum with 4/5 H 2D anything else 2C------2D-------??? 2H = H inv (5 or +) 2S = S Inv (5 or +) 2NT = inv with or without 4H rest is D GF 2C-------2H--------??? pass = I was inv with 4H (maybe 5H is possible ?) 2S = Inv with 5S 2Nt = Inv 3H = (maybe) I was Inv with 5H rest is D GF -------------------------------------------- 2D + 2H are transfers to play or 4/5 carder GF (no inv hand there) 2D------2H (forced)---??? Pass = 5H soff rest is GF with 4 or 5 H --------------------------------------------------------------- 2S is INV with 4 spades (this may seems a waste of space but our NT is wide ranging so our inv bids are frequent and necessary) --------------------------------------------------------------- 2Nt and + Minors inv GF no M (without D as primary suit) GF with clubs puppet stayman or similar gadget ------------------------------------------------- advantages a lot of inv bidding that allow you to stay in 2M instead of (3M/2NT) keeping transfers D transfer to play or GF a M transfer followed by 2Nt or by 3M is forcing ------------------------------------------------ disadvantages. 2S isnt free for MSS/rangecheck/club transfers no bid for inv (4S + 4/5H) (with 5S and 4/5H you start by 2C followed by 2S) probably some stuff wont fit in at 2Nt and 3 level No garbage stayman

what's a weak jump overcall?
benlessard replied to fromageGB's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
When asked about passed hand preempt I say from very weak to game is unlikely facing a passed hand. -
2M = preempt 2m = 9-13 with 6 card suit. So that 1D is a 2suiter or 14-15 pts I find that a M preempt is better weak than intermediate because the prob of stealing the hand is higher, but for minors the intermediate work like a charm. Especially since it remove some pressure from your 1D opening.

Or if declarer play the T at trick 1.

When God created the 5-card major suits...
benlessard replied to OleBerg's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
With + 35imps i might overcall 1D. If they reached 4S partner will know what to lead. It will probably stop them from bidding 3NT. If partner has values we will reach game. The drawback is playing a doubled X contract (5D mostly) IMO partner shouldnt fight to bid 3D or 4D over a S partial but will take the 5D insurance pretty often. Drawback of a H overcall.. Might get the wrong lead and they make 4S (going down at the other table). Might push them into 3Nt instead of 4S (going down at the other table) Drawback of pass. We can miss a game They might reach 3Nt. Im not sure i prefer 1D to pass but im sure 1D/pass are better than 1H (at +35 and 2 boards) Next time you have a state of match type of problems please post the score and how many boards to go. -
1NT interference

Forcing pass after a 1NT = simply unplayable. -
Strange Thought

Just play doop. -
I would double especially since i have a hard time with slow pass "lightner".

lol big time at a unfavorable preempt with KJTxxx

Close I pass. In my book a red vs W preempts show real goodies.
