5♥ if partner bids 5♠ ill bid 6♣ otherwise my bid is 7♣. IMO partner 5♣ is positive, with a weak semi fitted hand he will X and with unsure values he will pass. So his 5♣ mean `i think we can make 5♣` edited-- Im expecting most players to bid 5♥ so the real question is on the next round.

If your 2nt isnt forcing of if partner can partner pass 3♥ (if you are limited )then your hand cannot be really better then what it is. Partner probably made a thin slam try based on clubs shortness (hoping you have no or little wasted values there) but my hand is the best hand i could have so i bid 6H (do we have a bid to suggest to play 6♠ ? ) and it wont surprised me if i make 7. My requirement for minimum with a good suit are probably high compared to most of the players. For me partner could have AJxxxx in ♥ and not bid them over the X.

Know Thyself.
benlessard replied to Winstonm's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My biggest weakness is remembering the spots. Both my declarer and my defense are affected by that. Ive noticed that most players above my strenght have photographic memories. Most of them have a clear pictures of the 52 cards after and during the deal. Ive played with a partner who could remember almost all the 52*24 cards after a 24 deals sessions. My declarer play/defense was nowhere near of his caliber, It was not because he was choosing better lines of play or could see better defensive lines but mostly in the execution of them. As a declarer he could easily see the hand from the defender point of view (with all the spots, counts signals and subtile suits prefence) and that is a tremendous advantage. In defense every card i played had a meaning and he saw it all. Me im ok for the honnors after 24 boards but i can forget spots before the hand is over.I have no difficulties knowing if my "6" is master. But to remember what was the exact spots under it is a pain. In defense i can be lazy with the spots. I think its because i visualize rank instead of the cards numbers. If the AQ63 has been played then i see my 9 as a 'jack now' (4th best card). Also i don't have the stamina to play 2 sessions per day. My concentration always drop after 40 boards or so. I also have difficulties when switching from a student to a 'real partner' and from a 'real' partner to a student. I have a good attitude towards my partners. When i see my partner make a nasty defensive-bidding blunder I can manage to shut my mouth but it take some energy. My aim is to play a full day without coming back on any deals (to only discuss at the end of the tournament) but its not easy. -
Maybe i misread the auction I saw 1♣-------1♦ 1♥-------1♠ 1nt-------3nt 3nt is signoff Even if 1♠ is 100% GF i still think openener is limited to 15 pts for his 1nt rebid. If 1♠ is Art GF and 1nt only show a ♠ stopper but could be any strenght then partner can bid over 3nt. Otherwise he cannot. Plus if 1♠ is art GF then 3nt is one of the worst bid i can imagine since you you can bid an easy 2♦ or 2♠ to further describe your shape.

I think 3nt is sick... Its possible that 3nt is the best contract but its also possible that 4♠ or 5♦ or a slam is there and a 3nt bid make no moves for finding them. Partner could easily have a 3415 shapes with some extras by keeping the bidding open you are freerolling.

In IMPs ♠K♠ is the only lead IMO. In MP i guess small ♥ could be best.

3♠ With 2♥ stopper my pd will bid 3nt to offer choice of game. If partner pass ill be happy to play a partscore and probably happy to be in spades. If partner bid 4♠ it rate to be a fair MP anti-field contract. Ive bid these kinds of hands regularly and im very satisfied with my 3cd raise result so far ... so ill keep doing until proven otherwise. edited --- 2♥ seems like a dangerous overbid since partner will be short in ♦ and my KQ♦ are a bit of wasted values. An interesting gamble is also to bid a low 2♣ and waiting for partner response... and if partner pass you have great chance the opps will balance.

penalty with at least 4♠ or 3♠ and extra values (clubs values probably) its to avoid psych and to find 4-4♠ fit despite the 4-1 break.
-
RHO probably didnt bypass a major and probably doesnt have 5♣. So hes likely to have 3♦. West is likely to be be short in Diamonds and my preempt might push them into a bad slam (♦AK♦ facing a stiff or d void). Also we have a lead problems defending 3nt with an unclear lead is annoying since you can blow some MP just by the lead. I think the risk of down 4 or worse or that 3nt goes down is too bad. So i give 35% for 4♦ and i lead a low D.

The way ive learned it is that 1♠-----2♦ ??? 2nt showed 12-14 or 18-21 3nt showed 15-17 This is because you want to separate the 15-17 troublesome range so your partner with a 15-16 count isnt force to go over 3nt. Also if you always open 1nt with 15-17 and a 5 cd major when you bid 3nt your telling partner you have a stiff in his suit.

I think 3♣ could be non-forcing (based on the fact thant 2nt aint forcing but i don't really know) you still have 3♦ to force. But i still think no other bid come close. If partner bring you a stiff heart and 5 clubs (wich is quite likely by the way) 3♣ will play much better then 3♥ and with any Qx partner can correct and with any max partner can bid game. I would prefer to play 2nt then 3♣ but i want to make a foward move so 3♣ look natural and safe. PS i thought at first that the hearts were AT9xxx and i didnt want to repeat them. But ATxxxx --- ugly Of course when you play with a student the game (esp MP) its a different game, they never raise you with Qx or with a stiff K and they repeat all kind of crappy suit because they don't understand delayed raise. So if you know your parnter wont correct to 3♥ with 2♥ and 4♣ or wont bid 3♥ with Qx then both 3♥ and pass are reasonnable Mp gamble.
-
3♥ is quite ugly imho pass is probably a worse mistake 3 trick and Q9 in a repeated suit not sure i can understand a pass. (Unless you often pull out of 2nt without game interest) Im curious as why you didnt bid 3♣ ?
-
T of ♦. No reason to make agressive leads. Diamonds could be the best spot to get your tricks and leading an A could easily blow a trick or a tempo. Leading a low club is too dangerous. Anyone ready for a computer simulation ?

1♠----pass----pass-----X 6♥----pass----7♥----pass making hows that for a costly reopening X Opener had something like a 1.5 loser 66 and responder had the ace 5th of♥ and a stiff ♠ RHO probably had enough to balance but im not sure.
-
Its an offensive ratio -- defensive ratio agreement. Either you allow light HCP--low defense overcall and reach some light HCP games but never X the opponent. Or you play sound HCP high defensive overcall so you can X them but miss some games. I don`t mind either style as long as both partners are on the same wavelenght.
-
I don`t X with a void at the 2 level but i have no problem with those who does. But to X at the 3 level with a void is one of the easiest way to lose imps i know and i strongly suggest you to avoid it like plague. But since this is MP i suppose X with a void is possible but i really don`t like it. Marshall Miles has a peculiar way of dealing with negative X at the 3 level in `Advanced bidding for the 21st century` very interesting reading IMHO.

[hv=v=b&s=shjxxxxdkjxxckxxx]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] This is the best hand partner could have without the ♥a♥ and without ♣KQ♣. And its not enough to balanced X red imho. And they will always make whatever i play. So im certain partner has either ♣KQ♣ or the ♥A♥. With ♣KQ♣ he would probably lead them.
-
Repeating ♥ with AT9xxx is sick imho. ill bid 3♣ NF no other bids come close. Its still foward going. If 2nt is NF its should always show a stopper IMHO.

This is 100% forcing pass auction so there is 3 way to show a good hand. 5♥ pass and pull to 5♠ pass and pull to 5♥ We play that pass and pull is stronger so for me pass and pull in the new suit should be the strongest bid. Considering a 4♦ bids showing both majors is possible i think my hand has extras. So I pass and pull to 5♠. But a direct 5♥ is ok too. My hand is too good for a direct 5♠ and not good enough for a pass and pull to 5♥. As for 5♥ showing the ace i think its pointless. Partner with a stiff heart shouldnt get too excited he would prefer to have ♥Qx♥. So for me 5♥ or pass and pull to ♥ doesnt show the ♥A♥
