preempting at mp's
benlessard replied to plaur's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
In mp to play that freebid promise extra is a losing proposition. I dont play that 2H over 2D is forcing and im pretty sure its better to play it that way (at least in mp). This being said Im not sure 2D is a wise bid. It will allow the opener to make a probable support X. While passing will still allow you to bid 3D. The upside of 2D is that it will allow partner to raise you so you can sac at 4D or 5D depending on the vuln. -
3D for the first 1 pass for the 2nd. Nothing else is close for me. Playing ELC i would of course X of the 1st 1 but still pass for the 2nd
-
Red vs W this is a 3 level preempt Both in imps and in mp you dont want to see partner bid 4S over 4H so often so i would consider to bid 4 directly a really bad mistake. To overbid by 3 trick RvsW clearly doesnt make any sense in any position
-
Hoping to buy the hand at 2C/3C with a 9/10 card fit is naive. Raising before they bid/fit fit is what competitive bidding is all about.

Easy 2C for me. But im glad i aint playing standard for serious imps bridge.

The Misadventures of Rex and Jay's Teammates #1
benlessard replied to microcap's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
With 2S or less and 4H ill always bid 3H. Partner could have 35?? and will pass 2S. Partner could even have a weakish hand with 6 bad H and will pass 2S. Ill pass with 3433 shapes but maybe bidding is better. If you play good-bad then having H pose np for me. -
(3H)-----4H
benlessard replied to benlessard's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
No doubt in my mind that non-leaping is giving me better result then 4m as single suiter. What im wondering is what people do with 3055 or 3064. For me X is highly unattractive so i like to bid 4H with these hand, partner need 5 or 4 good S to bid 4S. -
could I have done better than 2 hearts
benlessard replied to sceptic's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
2D could even be bid with 6H and 3D (in imps) with a hand that is too strong for 2H and with H too bad for 3H. Some will disagree but its expert standard. -
2Nt as catch all is dubious, you will wrongside too many 3Nt contract. anyway its a 2D and 3C wtp for me what ever style we are playing.
-
2nt is 11-14 or 18-19 and 3nt is 15-17, both should show double D stopper except in the 18-19 version. Otherwise there is no satisfing way to show the 5422, 5431 (15-17) This assume 2S show at least 3S.

I suspect north is the 1 who made a bad X. 5C is the only bad bid, even the caddies know south made a psych, North has to have 4 trick in his hand to X. I dont think its a good psych & passing 2D hoping opps dont reach game is probably best, but these are not bad bid compared to 5C or north double without 4 sure tricks.

IMHO the hand is borderline so its more important to decide if the hand fit well with a 1D opening. 1D with AQxx is ok for competitive lead directing purpose. 1D---1H----??? i have np for 2H 1D---1S----??? i have np for 2S. 1D---1Nt---??? i have np with pass 1D---limit-----i have np with 3Nt so ill open this 1 1D because i feel that 1D & continuation describe the hand better then a 1Nt bid. In a 12-14 nt i would never open this one 1nt. In a strong club (15+) i would open 1C. So its not because i find the hand too weak that im opening 1D. Finding the exact numerical strenght of the hand isnt what is important , finding the best way to show the value of the hand is what is important.

Do you play that (3H)----4H could be S+m ? I think the standard method is X= takeout + elc hands 3S to 4D natural 4H= both m slammish, both m+ S tolerance. 4S= nat 4Nt both m 5m= nat but very strong hand since 4m is also natural (with 5S + 5m) = X followed by 4S With leaping michael its something like X= take-out+ some 4S-6m hands 3S & 3nt = nat 4C= C+S 4D=D+S 4H slammish 2 or 3 suiters 4S nat 4Nt both m 5m might be a slight gamble since 4m isnt natural. With FILO (fishbein + cheaper m take-out) X= Sp X 3S= nat 3Nt= nat but tend to show a long m 4C= take-out with H shortness or S + C 4D= D + S 4H= both m+ S tol or both m with H void 4S= nat 4Nt = both m 5m = natural but could be gamble since 4m isnt available. Do you play something else ?

Partnership Compatibility
benlessard replied to awm's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My 1 question would be "do you know transfer lebensohl ?" A- Yes but we have to do some talking before playing it B- Yes we will play it C- yes but i dont want to play it because its too complicated D-No but i know lebensohl E- im learning lebensohl in my advanced bidding course F- What is lebensohl ? This will give me a quick info on the level and willingness to play complicated stuff. My 2nd question is your siganlling style ? please develop your answer ! This will give me a info on his defensive skill and partnership understanding skill. -
The main reason why LHO lead the ♥A instead of the Q or a ♠ is because he know RHO is broke so ill play LHO for the DQ.
-
I dont see why you can put partner with 3C. xx AKxx KJxxx Qx I much prefer to bid 3C then to rebid 3D. Its probably more a matter of style but for me Qx is an adequate holding for giving a preference when ive already made 2 natural bid. 1D---2C 2H----2S 3C = maybe Qx

Judge this Matchpoint Auction
benlessard replied to rogerclee's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
RHO is W/R and didnt bid 2s rightaway his hand is probably crap. Both north and south cannot sell out in Mp. Its pretty sure you had +110 and the fact that East balanced in 2s instead of bidding 2S right away mean that a fair amount of table will be in 2H. So its likely +50 or +100 will be a terrible result. I would probably bid 3H with south (not proud of it at all) but i think the upside of 3H making is higher then the downside of being -100 instead of +50 since i dont give too much MP for +50 anyway. I would surely bid 3H with north, I consider north pass a mistake. -
Bidding over Weak 2 Bid
benlessard replied to ArtK78's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
3S , for me X and 2S doesnt show that type of hand. Give partner the K of clubs and nothing else and you want to be in 4S. -
If 2H doesnt show extra then 2C has to be GF (and i lol at this system). So after 3S you have told your story, you might have little extra but misfits hand are ugly, So i pass 4S.

Wtp 5H, X with a void and a fit when we are red and they are W is crazy imho.

Try to find any of the Rosenkraz book. There is structure for responding to preempts where a 4 level bids ask for a control, the preemptor if having the control make a keycard responses. This is a killer tool both for imps & for MP. This hand is the perfect hand for it. You will bid slam if the side card is the A of clubs or the A of H and a stiff clubs wich isnt unlikely at all. Those who think AJxxxxx and no side card is a 2nd seat red preempt are playing too much MP and not enough imps. Red 3 level preempt 2nd seat should be more often 5 losers then 6 losers. so over 4C my preffered responses are 4D 1 + control but no card 4H 1+ control + card (only if we have the space) 4S no C control or 0 keycard 4Nt 2+control 5C 2+Q + control

wtp X, ill bid 3nt before bidding 4D.

Imo its quite important to have a way to invite and finish at 2S. I would play that an immediate 2S is weak and 1nt followed by 2S is inv. I dont feel confortable bidding 3S inv.
-
Im pretty sure standard meaning is half-a stopper and opener should probably bid 3nt. I dont think its the best treatment but its the default treatment at least here in Canada. What i think is the best treatment is 3H is asking for stopper or half a stop and 3S is repeating the H (or semi-waiting) . ........3D ?? 3H----3S (half a stop or positionnal stop) 3Nt (half a stop) 3H.....3Nt (positionnal stop or non positionnal stop and no desire for 5m) 3H......4X nothing in S 3S.....3Nt (S stop, to play) 3Nt (S stop positionnal or not positionnal and no desire to play elsewhere) It allow to play 3nt for the right side most of the time, its allow responder to repeat his suit (he might still have 6H to the J and 4H is the only spot) and it allow to play 3nt when both have half a stop. I dont see what i could ask for more ? What it doesnt do is ask for a stopper in responder suit and its tougher to cue-bid. To use 3S to show weak H and asking for a H stop is a pretty weak method imo.

I think 2Nt is unlikely to work here but who knows ?
