As a beginner I read "Standard Bidding with SAYC" by Ned Downey and Ellen Pomer "Caitlin". It's easy reading and I found it helpful.

My appologies to Jim and Tate for missing the change in poster. I have since found out that my modem is a Actiontec M1000. There is a module upgrade (W1000) that will allow me to upgrade to wireless. This is what their website says about it: "Add 802.11g wireless networking capabilities to your Qwest M1000 modem with this simple wireless plug-in module. All you have to do is plug the wireless module into the top of the M1000 DSL Modem. WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), WPA-PSK and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security features are all included for enhanced security. •Compatible with Qwest M1000 DSL modems •Provides your Qwest M1000 modem with 802.11g wireless connectivity •Built-in WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), WPA-PSK and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security features for secure wireless connection •Plug-and-play installation... no software or drivers required" I also found an interest clip http://computer.howstuffworks.com/router.htm Even though these are router instuctions, would they not also apply to my modem after I have upgrade it? Thanks everyone so much. You are really helping me out.

oh wow. My modem does have an SSID name. I will try this later today. Thanks a bunch Tate!

yea, I've had the dsl modem about 4 years. It does't have wireless. I may just upgrade the modem and not worry about getting router. Thanks all. BTW, I imagine many teens can do many things I cannot do. lol

thanks good advice :D

Thanks Tate. I have DSL, but Imagine it makes no difference. My goal is to use both my wireless capable laptop and my desktop which isn't wireless. Sounds like it's not a problem with a router.

It is connected via an ethernet cable

Simple question(I think) I have a wired modem for my desktop computer's interet connection. This modem doesn't have wireless capabilites. I want to be able to use my laptop with wireless capabilites to connect to my Internet. Can anyone tell me if this can be done with a router? My modem has the following connections "line", "phone", "usb". Thanks in advance

I use the old client bbo program and have set the gib to a slower speed. I do find improved play from my Gib P and from my Gib opponents. Are the other tables I'm competing against using the same advanced Gib?

i'm having problems hearing everyone too. I've adjusted the volumne on the controls as high as possible and on my pc but some of the commentary is to low and muffled to hear while others are quite clear

oh yes, sorry for the typo's.

The windows version of BBO has an excellent tutorial written by Fred Guitleman. You can find it under the "other actvities" link. I believer the same tutorial is also on the ABCL site. Also many BIL tables allow discussions and questions at the table.

I knew a young man (33) who was self employed. His income did not allow him to purchase health insurance. He noticed a lump in his abdomine. He never saw anyone about it because of the cost. He is dead. I'm not sure if getting medical help would have saved him or even prolonged his life. But I think it is a shame and so sad he didn't think he had any options.

It pisses me off that people who can afford their payments are walking away from their homes and their obligation.
-
60 Minutes did a segment last Sunday that just pissed me off. They claim approximately 1 million americans walked away from their homes "underwater or worth less than their mortgage even though they could afford the payments. A young family from Phoenix tried to get their bank to re-negotiate their loan. The bank, of course, saw no reason to do so and now they will simply let the loan go into default. They will live there payment free until the foreclosure is completed. They were excited at the prospect of renting a much nicer home for the same amount of money. They didn't feel the least bit guilty about damaging their neighbors home values or not fufilling their loan abligation. They figure in a few years they will just buy something else.

Very basic but a vexed question
sharon j replied to Wackojack's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
While I think such an approach is good for advancing players, for beginners, it's really too much for them to absorb. They're busy trying to remember how to count points and which cards are high, let alone plus/minus factors. Saying 13 to open, 6 to respond is mandatory, and once you get good you need fewer, works better in my experience. And yes, I do teach beginners to pass 12-counts because their cardplay simply isn't up to snuff -- they really need 26 points to make game. This is related to one of the issues I have with BBO's Learn to Play Bridge software. The software is incredible for an intermediate who is willing to review the fundamentals -- Fred does a great job explaining judgement and even I learned something after having played the game for many years. But having attempted to use the software as a teaching supplement, I have yet to see a single true beginner love the software -- if anything the software is a turnoff because there's just Too Much Information. I knew absolutely nothing about bridge other than it was a card game, so I was a "true beginner". I loved Fred's program and I believe many more experienced bridge players could learn something from it. I still use it to review when things gets cloudy. -
Do many online bbo players have regular online partnerships? Do many online bbo players want regular online partnerships? Over the past few years, I have noticed few players advertise for regular partners on this site (under seeking partner/teacher). Why not? Are the few that do advertise sucessfull?
-
Hi, I too would like to find a reg. partner. I play 2/1 skill level is: intermediate (although sometimes I play like a beginner) I live in the West US I am retired and have pretty flexible schedule. If you see me on line and want to give it a try my bbo name is sharon j

this is a good site to learn the basics of 2/1. www.home.comcast.net After learning the basics of SAYC, this site helped me with the basics of 2/1. Then you can add the gadgets.

I"m an intermediate also on PST. If you see me on sometime, please let's chat and see if we can work something out.

Is 3 H a reverse?
sharon j replied to sharon j's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
ok, thanks everyone, was a raise and not a reverse or cue bid. I guess the bidding looked weird, I'll try it this way P (P) 1♦ (1♠) X (2♠) 3♥ -
N - E- S- W P- P- 1♦ 1♥ x- 2♠ 3♥
