How many ways can you bid this hand?
mw64ahw replied to mw64ahw's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Thanks for the Precision sequence. ♠ were led on the majority of the hands. A ♣ lead from West made the cards easier to read as did a ♠ lead from East especially after J♦ fell on the first round of Trumps. I had a T♠ lead from West and decided to guarantee the contract rather than going for the extras available. 6 of the 16 managed to make 6+ -
Tough one to bid the slam on. South's hand would be 'GF' for me with 10+hcp & MLT<=7.5. As North I would be looking for the marginal slam after the 'GF' bid, but end up in 5♦ as the slam exploration would show less than a 50/50 chance of it being made. I would skip 3NT as my bidding sequence would only find 3♥ between us.

The complete hands with a grand available in ♦,♣ & NT [hv=pc=n&s=s763hkq83dk64cjt3&w=st984ht542djcq974&n=sa2ha7daqt92cak85&e=skqj5hj96d8753c62]399|300[/hv] -
How many ways can you bid this hand?
mw64ahw replied to mw64ahw's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I have a Multi2D with 2♦-2♥-3♥ showing 4♣ & 5♦ with this strength, but so rare partner wouldn't have remembered. 3♠ is a slam try --3NT asks which strain --4m sets the strain & then we start showing keycards & controls 3NT to play 4m to play We play an unbalanced ♦ so I opened 1♣ (Transfer Walsh style). Partner showed ♥ & I mistakenly bid 2NT rather than 2♦ (4/5 ♦) which should have culminated in 6♦ -

All bar 1 pair (5♦ down 1) ended up in 3NT with a range of openings. A grand was available in 3 strains 1♣x1 (my under bid?, but I made the incorrect rebid), 1♦x6, 2♣x5, 2♦x1,2NTx3 Partner's hand below if it helps to develop the bidding [hv=pc=n&s=s763hkq83dk64cjt3&n=sa2ha7daqt92cak85]133|200[/hv] -

With a flat 9hcp hand and 4 card major would you go the minor suit Stayman route? -
Here is a hand I had earlier on this week, but I struggled to find a good route to a slam with partner having a flat 9hcp hand with a 4 card major I have a specific approach which would have worked, but partner was unlikely to be in tune [hv=pc=n&n=sa2ha7daqt92cak82]133|100|How many ways can you bid this hand?[/hv]

Not your usual 12 count

My approach to 1M-2♣ aims to define openers strength/shape further 2♦ Min-2♥ asks for responses as below 2♥ 4+other M Min+ 2♠ 4+♦ Int+ 2NT 6+M Int+ w. void/singleton --3♣ asks for further definition ----3♦ 4+m ------3♥ Which? --3X shows short suit 3♣ 4+♣ Int+ 3♦ Str+ (semi)balanced 3♥ 5+♥ over 1♠ 3M 6+M self-sufficient suit With North's hand you have a Min hcp count, with an MLT < 5.5 so in slam territory if a fit is found. With a self-sustaining suit and a fallback of 4♠ I bid 2NT with the advantage that the opponents will end up knowing little about partners shape 1♠-2♣ 2NT - 3♣ 3♦-3♥ 3♠-4♣ SI/GF (given North has shown an Int+ hand) in ♣ etc. using RKC/Kickbo Opening 4♠ gets gets me to 7♠ after South starts a Slam bidding sequence using RKC/Kickbo -

Yep thinking about it further there's a possible slam there. Are you risking a 4♣ contract by bidding it directly?. Why not cue-bid ♥. If partner takes it to 3NT then a following 4♣ bid indicates the slam try. -

I would open North's hand 4♠ (Namyats) so with a self-sustaining suit just bid 4♠. -
minor openning bid

Opening a minor for me denies a 5 card Major -
I play 3♣ as a strong minimum or intermediate hand as in The Overcall Structure, but may X initially with the intermediate hand and length depending on side-suit strength. The later X would show some useful ♠ and a singleton in the Red suits; probably ♦
-
What would a 3♣ Q bid by North mean? stronger than a X?
-
South should bid 3♥ over the X with an MLT of 8. This will give North the opportunity to Q bid with his Strong <5.5 MLT hand. The bidding would then go 3♥-4♣ (♣ control & ♥ honour) 4♥ (denies ♦ control)-4NT (3KCs w. A♠ & ♦ control) 6♥ (1KC w. Q♥)
-
Thanks - I enjoy your progressive posts, which get me thinking. I only wish I could think quickly & clearly enough when playing
-
Given West's ♣ bid (5+) South's 4♣s I would suspect that North is 6(32)2 or 6331. With 7LT/8MLT 4♥ could be on if North is more than a minimum. Worth 3♥ or even 4♥ if you don't want to mess around?
-
They are consistent for me 3NT would be my call on East's hand (16+ points/stopper & decent minor), because of the double ♣ stopper and K♠ & because I can count 8 tricks. (♥s could be an issue, but that's the risk I take) X followed by 3NT would suggest an Extra-Strong hand 21+points. With a slightly different ♦ orientated hand where I couldn't count 8 tricks it would be X followed by 2♦ as per the bidding above. The example provided by Cyberyeti is (xxx, void, AKx, AKQ10xxx) is a different type of hand that won't play in 3NT). I X that and then bid at the 3 level to show a Strong hand. This hand is offensively stronger for me with a modified loosing trick count of 3.5 versus 6 for East's ♦orientated hand.
-
That hand plays stronger than this one for me despite the lower HCP count so I X and bid 3♣ initially over 1♥
-
No X-that suggests a stronger hand if you follow up with 3NT for me. Not really a Gambling 3NT as you have a stronger hand the 1♣ bid and expect a ♣ lead?
-
Double stopper in ♣, K♠ following the strong hand - I'm counting 8 tricks with an extra one from partner with responder passing.
-
That's worth a 3NT overcall
-
I would do that over a weak 2 opening as I'd expect to be bidding the suit at the 3 level, but dial it down to 15 over a 1 level opening
-
On the following assumptions Opener has between 11 & 17hcp Responder has 0-4hcp =>Doubler has 15-25hcp 2♦ suggests <18hcp? so Pass?

More to CRO about
mw64ahw replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I can concoct a reply using 4-way transfers, but with a known (by North) 34/35 points between you the following is all that is required after South's response 1NT-4♣ (Super Gerber version) 4NT (2 Aces & 1 King)-7NT -
Take over the bidding..
mw64ahw replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The 2/1 version I use with Kickbo (2♥ would show Min) 1♥-2♦ (5+♦) 2NT (6331/64xx Int+)-3♣ (Which?) 3♦ (64xx)-3♥ (Which Minor?) 3♠ (♣)-4♣ (GF/SI ♣) 4♦ (2 keycards)-5♦ (All keycards w/o Q♣) 6♣ (Denies Q♣/10 card fit)-Pass
