Transfer Responses to a Sweedish Club
glen replied to relknes's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
You are right. I prefer the direct, non-transfer, approach, which puts the opponents in a guess: 1NT: 11+, 5+ minor 2m: 8-10, 5+ minor Now 2m is not-forcing (11-13 will pass, 17+ will bid and establish game force), and opponents have to guess whether to enter the auction after 1♣-2♣ and 1♣-2♦. In the transfer approach, they just wait for 1♣-1NT;-2♣-Pass or 1♣-2♣;-2♦-Pass. -

and are the 2♣ and 2♦ responses forcing and unlimited, such that 11-13 balanced opposite 8 points will end up at 2NT or higher? -

and what do they bid with fewer than 8 hcp and no four card major? -
You would trade all the hand types covered by a negative double just for "double as a transfer to diamonds"? I much prefer a Bergen switch here, 3♦ transfer to ♥s, 3♥ game force with ♦s and denying 4+♥s.

SLOW Play USA Trials
glen replied to chudecek's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I really enjoy watch football games as shown on the NFL Network's NFL Replay - this is 1 1/4 hours per game before I fast-forward past the ads. They edit out all the huddles, timeouts, coach's challenges etc. to produce a fast-paced and highly entertaining show. Imagine if the US finals were recorded live, but shown on vugraph with a start time an hour later than actual, and giving one of the commentators the ability to fast forward during the many slow spots, and if necessary, say when somebody fails to take their 9 tricks in a 3NT or makes a clever squeeze to bring in a contract, then a quick instant replay for all those watching who like to watch big hits and touchdowns. -
109 was confusing: http://usbf.org/docs/vugraphs/USBC2011/html/USBC2011_R8_2_s8.htm#bd109 If Hamman really discarded the ♠ 4 on the ♣ ace trick, his only play at that point was hope for either red suit to split 3-3, or a red suit squeeze, therefore unblock ♦ king, take 3 top spades ending in dummy, which is auto pilot for Hamman. However play records can be wrong, especially when it comes to small card discards.

Regarding the segments in the Bathurst-Nickell match, here are the IMPs by partnership: Bathurst-Zagorin: 4 segments, 94-128, -8.5 per segment Grue-Lall: 6 segments, 233-154, +13.17 per segment Hurd-Wooldridge: 6 segments, 192-128, +7.5 per segment Nickell-Katz: 4 segments 128-94, +8.5 per segment Hamman-Zia: 4 segments 109-188, -19.75 per segment Meckwell: 8 segments (the whole match): 237-282, -5.63 per segment To have Meckwell play all 8 segments resulted in Hamman-Zia only in for half the segments. btw do the hard working vugraph operators get any credits in photos?

Board 60 in: http://usbf.org/docs/vugraphs/USBC2011/hands/USBC2011_R8_2_31-60.PDF Spade suit was Q32 -- AK874, both tables reached 6NT, after West opened 1NT, East bid Stayman and South doubled. After winning ♣ lead, Wooldridge played ♠ Q, ♠ to 7. Meck ♠ Q, ♠ to ace. South had singleton spade ten.

It's curtains for us?

In the QFs, the ♦ team (1/3 born in Toronto) is cheering on Justin and the rest of the Bathurst team, while the Nickell team (Toronto area coach) likes the Deutsch team's chances with their 1/3 Toronto/Montreal roots. Its nice being able to watch the US championships from Canada.

Question: say the auction goes Pass(0-7 or 16+)-2♠(by opps)-Pass-Pass;-?, does this mean opener must bid when the strong hand type risking 2NT or the three level on 16-17s? Compare with a big club system, 1♣(16+)-2♠(by opps)-Pass-Pass;-?, now opener passes most of the 16-17 hands and the 18s balanced, and bidding shows extras.

There could be a language concern here, and the person might have meant "I didn't understand..."

One of Germany's best partnerships, Gromoeller-Kirmse, have used a 11-13 1NT at the top levels (e.g. bronze medal 2009 World Transnational Open Teams), in their Swiss-Acol style: gromoeller-kirmse.pdf In a big club context, I used it in this system: express.pdf

In Spry (spry.pdf), I have 1♠ as super negative, and 1♦ as a not-so-negative negative. For the methods over 1♣-1♠, I looked at what the corresponding standard auctions would be: these would a one level opening bid passed, or a strong two club opening, or a 2NT opening with a signoff. For the corresponding "standard" big club sequences, the auction would be 1♣-1♦;-non jump passed out, and 1♣-1♦;-jump suit game force, or 1♣-1♦;-2NT and signoff. Since the opponents were not "fighting for the part-score" using their methods, it didn't seem worthwhile to develop a lot of structure for that. For Spry, the structure over 1♣-1♠ is: The only attempt at getting to a different part score was the 1♣-1♠;-2♠ showing both majors, as my simulations showed stopping in 1♠ when 4♥ is nice was a problem - not so much fighting for the part score as getting to game.

The Natural Portion of a Non-Natural System
glen replied to relknes's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Depends on what the "some number" starts at -
"Learning process" = good objective for person Creating new bidding system for "novices and lower level intermediates" = not a good objective for the bridge community, though it make take some learning process, and some remarks (e.g. is a guess system at all good for novices?), to see the concerns

If "politeness and civility" is calling somebody rude and lazy for asking a simple "do you mean this or that" question, I think you are appreciating the wrong things. Thanks for replying to my question (even when put in chase-style wording), and I look forward to when the details of your proposed system are available.

However if you were not "so rude as well as lazy", you would KNOW that the rehashed "Opener either has exactly 5 clubs with 5-3-3-2 distribution, or has no 5+ suit" is not the same as your rehashed "any 5332".

For your proposal, is the 1♣ opening either: or
