It's a shame - it would score well, but 4NT quantitative if dbl is unavailable. -

Speaking of aggressive preempting
pilowsky replied to pilowsky's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The hand was interesting (to me) because of the very large number of final contracts and outcomes. The bidding started: pass..=7 3S....=7 2S....=2 4S....=1 2D!...=3 And things went downhill from there, with scores ranging from +140 to -800. I was in the pass camp having read a book on preempts (by a Canadian expert) that advocated very disciplined preempts. It was a close decision between 3S and pass but in the end I wanted my partner to trust me (since it makes up in part) for the quality of my play. Here's the full deal: [hv=pc=n&s=skt98652ht64d62cq&w=sj4hq72da875cakt7&n=shakj83djt943cj95&e=saq73h95dkqc86432]399|300[/hv] -
Suggesting a useful method for testing one component of a fair-play detection system in Bridge.

It's a good question. Here's what ChatGPT says: It seems to take a dim view of numbering girlfriends.
-
Now we know who to blame.
-
According to CNN This seems to suggest that ChatGPT currently sits somewhere above Argine and below GIB. A recent seminar from Stanford gives some insight into the development of AI. One thing it seems reasonably good at is writing and explaining code. When I asked it about a line from "Mots D'Heures: Gousses, Rames: The D'Antin Manuscript" it failed completely. Inappropriate? Bah.

Upgrade to do what?

Live-streaming of video games has a large following. Today in the final of the Meltwater championship Magnus Carlsen edged out Hikaru Nakamura (again). Right now, in the ACBL Open-Pairs Fri 7:10PM an 18 board matchpoints tournament with 256 players, (at least) one of the players (West) is live-streaming their game. Sounds like fun? Unfortunately anyone playing at the same time can jump between BBO and TwitchTV to see what the West holding is on his hand. Or just wait a minute or two and see the whole layout before bidding/playing their own hand.

Well TBF it does say 'non-forcing' - maybe you need to press the double button a little harder.
-
Thanks for that. Almost everyone ended in 2♥ or 2♠ with 1 in 3♠ and 1 in 3♥. None of the NS pairs found 3NT which in this particular case is the only making game contract. I did wonder if there were any approaches beyond the usual overcall methods for locating 3NT/4M in these situations. Especially with the trend towards weaker NT ranges (we use 14-17) or against a genuine weak NT pair. Here's the full hand.[hv=pc=n&s=sqt9ht73dkt7ct873&w=sj8h985d86432cq62&n=sak754hakq6d5cj54&e=s632hj42daqj9cak9&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=1n(15-17)pp2d(majors)p2hppp]399|300[/hv]

Wisely.

[hv=pc=n&n=sak754hakq6d5cj54&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=1n(15-17)pp2d(majors)p2hp]133|200[/hv] I picked up (so to speak) this hand on Board 22 in todays club game. Matchpoints and in the last round sitting close to the lead - which led me to be (more than usually) cautious. Looking over the results of the others most people sitting North bid 2♣ or 2♦ to indicate majors. I can now account for at least 32 of the 40 HCP at the table. I'm pretty sure West has no 5CM and <6 of either major. My question is how would the experts proceed - both as overcaller - and after partners forced response.

In which part of the world (time zone)?
-
No, thesidster is right. The average age of players is between 11 and 45. It's very rare to see anyone older taking up Bridge. The older people that you sometimes see at old-fashioned FTF venues are the grandparents of the youngsters. It is true that sometimes people are a little harsh but this is always taken in the helpful spirit that was intended.
-
No, just moderate.
-
In any event welcome to the forum where everyone is calm and never over reacts or takes offence at anything.
-
I think we may need to have a separate thread for amazing slam bidding.

It's easy to be misinterpreted - and even easier to take offence.

Why won't GIB prefer my first bid suit?

From Bridgebum: Rebids by Opener With 4+ cards in partner's shown suit, opener can bid it at the cheapest level with a minimum hand. Lacking 4 cards, opener can do one of the following: Rebid a 5-card (preferably at least 6-card) suit. Bid notrumps with a stopper in the enemy suit. Bid a new suit naturally (a reverse still shows a strong hand). Cue-bid the enemy suit with a strong balanced hand that lacks a stopper in that suit. Bid partner's shown suit with only 3 cards (last resort). [/hv] -
Good point, the meaning changes if opps double an earlier bid. Acol is a very strange system.
