Wrong in so many ways.
LBengtsson replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
2 to 1 opps have ♥A, so I would open 1♠. if partner cannot bid 1nt (forcing/semi-forcing) then we probably have not missed game but we could have... -
I have never heard that said "run the hearts" I thought it was compulsory to name a suit and a number, that is, a card specifically. Except where dummy has a stiff card where the suit only will be ok. I have heard "Heart(or any any other suit) from the top" and that says play the top card in the suit. but there is a difference ( as I now understand "run the hearts") between "run the hearts" and "run all the hearts". so, I guess, that declarer can stop "running the hearts" whenever he likes. But that could also cause confusion as dummy has been instructed to do as declarer says and might pull a card out before declarer thinks "stop" and changes his mind. so, in my mind, it is wrong to give dummy temporary control of the hand. every decision should be made by declarer, and declarer only.

I do not want to be in game on this board. will I pick ♥K stiff. only if I look at opponents cards. lol
-
agree. it might be wrong but partner has a stiff ♥ here, sometime 10 or K. for him to bid 2NT with void in ♥ is very wrong. passing 2Nt could be right as lead coming up to him, but your hand in ♥ look a better contract. ♥AQJ983 is likely just as good maybe better as ♥KJxxxxx and I would bid 3♥ with this and poor opening hand. so yes 3♥ is also my bid.

if we arrogantly think we are the only species in the universe, then we all deluded. ufos and other species on other planets probably do exist.

how high? (nz teams)

against non expert opposition I would be naughty boy and psyche 1♠ or 2♦ as long as partner knew it was forcing after opps. X -
Just because you can... Manx hands 8
LBengtsson replied to Douglas43's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
a fact not made here yet is that the responder hand is flat 4333 so no ruffing values. it is not only the quality of the ♠ that says a 3NT contract is better but the shape. even if the 1NT opener turn up with 5♠(332) it is unlikely that you make any more tricks with ♠ as trump as ruffing will be long ♠ hand. bidding 3nt direct without using stayman will direct the opps towards a major suit lead. they will think you will be weak in major suits. the contract could go down if the opps lead low from ♠AJtxx and partner has ♠Qx or xx but who would lead low from this suit? -
-1100 Disaster (nz teams)
LBengtsson replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
you will win statistically in the long game, jillybean. that hand you put is a freak, all balanced all around, no five card suits. you can open 1♦ instead vulnerable in 3rd if you get heebies about opening 1Nt weak with minimum 12 high points in 3rd red. with partner passed you are unlikely to miss game so you have an option... -1100 is worse score I have been down so you are in good company :) -
I open 1Nt with 6m332 shape so I see no problem rebidding 2Nt with 6m332 shape and very good 17 high point count. (k&r over 20!)
-
your opps. play the 2♥ ekren instead of 2♦ opening. I have played against scandi players who use this convention and play multi 2♦ also. without any defence to 2♥ opening I would just bid 3nt with south hand. 2nt suggest near 17-19, not 22
-
jillybean. you need system that when opps. X in both 2nd and 4th seat imo. I like convention where XX by opener puts opps. under pressure whether to pass or bid (run?). if you use smaller nt range (12-14, 10-12 :o) then you will open 1Nt more and give opps. more problems. it is good to have safety in mind, but not that many times the opps. will have the chance to X as they need 15+. one bad result is not disaster if you have ten good results using a smaller nt range. imo 12-14nt is like a pre-empt bid. partner knows what you have in a limited range and the opps. are in a more difficult position to counter its bid, even with conventions like landy, multilandy, brozel...

So sweet - NZ teams
LBengtsson replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
jillybean. how many norths opened 2♠ out of the 12? east playing slam is over 50%. if bidding go 2♣- 2♦(wait) - 2♥ natural/kokish I cannot see how you can miss slam? only 2♠ opening makes it difficult to find... -
double trouble lol your 2nt bid with ♣jxxxx/♦xxxx made robot west think e/w are missing a ♠ fit???

Basic mistake? nz teams
LBengtsson replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
2♠ here. a hand where precision handle better than 2/1 as openers strength is limited. partner with honours in ♥/♠ could make 50/50 game opposite your 2 aces but will not be able to move after simple preference bid of 2♠ -
science may not help on hand like this. just bid what you think you can make - 6♥. either partner has ♠a or ♣q or opponents will be in trouble discarding and they will be in pseudo squeeze. etc. the only science is to find out if partner has ♠AK(Q) so that may be possible after a 2Nt Ogust where you can show honours (3nt reply) Ogust does not agree weak two opening suit as trump suit imo. so may be possible to go 2♠ - 2nt - any reply 3♣/3♦/3♥/3♠ - 4nt rkcb for ♠ by inference - any reply - decide 6♥ or 7♥. you are boss as 2nt ogust bidder so partner trust you.

Non-Natural System for beginners
LBengtsson replied to pescetom's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
simple precision. c.c wei proved the goodness of it with its results. but learners need to know how to counter any interference over it also. -
agree..and its a 95% chance is that your next bid after 2♦ will be 3♣ so that will show your 1543 shape imo.

Cyberyeti says: The problem auction is that you could be facing 1♣-1♠-2♥-4♥ and now for us 4♠ is kickback (what else does partner bid with Kxxxx, Jxxxx, Qx, x). We are fortunate to have the artificial 2N rebid, but without it I wonder if 3♦ is better than 2♥ ? a 4-3 spade fit might well not be too bad if partner's suit is decent and we may be able to bail back into the club slam if partner shows ♠KQ and an ace or ♠K no Q and the ♥A. Nullve says: Let me first say that I really like the idea that 1♣-1♠ 2♥-3♥ 3♠ cancels hearts as trumps. But I doubt that is equally obvious everywhere in the world. In Norwegian 2/1, the strong 2♣ opening is not actually borrowed from American 2/1, but has evolved from an opening called Halle's 2♣ that originally showed something like 19-21 hcp with any shape OR a Culbertson 2♣ opening. (The 2♦, 2♥ and 2♠ openings were the same as in Culbertson.) Today it is almost indistinguishable from its American counterpart but even very strong players still use it on Acol Two-strength one-suiters to solve rebid problems. I believe this is true of Brogeland-Lindqvist, for instance, so I'd be (mildly) shocked if they had this auction (or the T-Walsh equivalent) and 3♠ were not intended as a cuebid with hearts as trumps. Lars says: this is why I feel a fake reverse can go wrong. on nullve's auction, it is not obvious except if you have a specific agreement with partner, that 3♠ is preferred 3 card support and cancels ♥ as trump. (I had not thought of cyberyeti's kickback auction but valid also) -

not an easy hand to bid as other players have said, but I do not like fake reverses as partner is given the wrong impression of the shape of your hand. having made that statement this hand should be boss in the auction after responders 1♠ bid. so you make a fake reverse (2♦/2♥), partner raises and then you bid partners first suit ♠s and partner has to assume automatically that is now what you want as the trump suit. thats garbage and you all know it! you probably should be able to cope with the rest of the auction as ♠ is higher than ♦/♥. but if rkcb is used later its possible that you may be giving inaccurate responses as neither of you are agreed what has been agreed as trump. -
every bid gives problems. I am surprised 2nt is not included here. not a great hand to bid it, but it does keep bidding low and tells partner your hand, about 16-19 high card points and stopper in opponents suit. if you get doubled then you have two suits to run to.

lol!. good human bridge mind will be able to work this out but this is beginners error expecting ♠K to drop from RHO instead of waiting for ♠AQ to be good. maybe the bridge program does not 'see' passive play where exiting a ♦ will lead to ♠AQ being two tricks, and robot goes for immediate drop of ♠K after one finesse as only winning option. if so the programmers need to reboot this feature.

Takeout double
LBengtsson replied to pilowsky's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
3♠ also like nullve. yes suit could be stronger but is headed by AK plus two more aces. hand is over 18 on kaplan/rubens and as the opponents have preempted I will assume partner will have 7-8 high card points. X followed by 3♠ is also an option, depending on partnership agreements but I would take this bid as this sort of hand also. one where a immediate 2♠ overcall shows a weaker hand than this. game will probably depend on no more than a finesse against the stronger ops hand. give your partner ♠xx ♥xxxx ♦kxxx ♣KJx and as long as trumps are 3-2 game is more than 50/50 -
Choose your plan
LBengtsson replied to Cyberyeti's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
no system is perfect. my plan transfer to ♦ then bid 6♦. problem is 3♠ would be transfer to either minor so I would still be playing hand. maybe then 3♣ (stayman, puppet, muppet) hope for 3♦ response and then bid 6♦. if partner shows 4♥/5♥ in hand then hope for best and bid 6♥ instead. -
nz teams - 22
LBengtsson replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
agree completely. 5-3/5-4 ♥ contract more usual than 5-2, and partner more like to have 12-13 than 14 max. without transfer partner cannot show 5-4 ♥ fit as supermax (3♥) then I would bid 4♥ so I will go with second best with the system we have available. -
easts explanation is BS. simple as.... if this was in a club/tournament a director would be called. except if east/west were using the Polish strong pass system - I know of but do not know the system - then easts pass is a misclick only. any other explanation is garbage!
