  1. Why another example that the US is the capital of the world? The fact that the US does not sign the Kyoto protocol gives rapidly developing countries like China an excuse to be a little slack in meeting quotas. If China or India reaches development levels of a US standard without meeting quotas then the world is screwed. Think of the world, not just the US. Sean
  2. We all know how to do personal messages, if we disagree, PM them to Bob. All we are doing is undermining someone helping out newer players. Sean
  3. Here's another plan for you, (even though it won't be in Northern Hemisphere summer). Take in Day 1 of the MCG Ashes test on December 26th, there should be 90-95,000 people there. Always a great atmosphere. Sean
  4. One thing I would like to add is START with a natural system, no precision or relay methods. This will teach you bidding judgment. If you move onto artificial systems after this it will help a lot. *waits for Claus' angry response* Sean
  5. Beer served in polystyrene cups at the cricket, truly awful. Regarding the qwerty keyboard, anyone noticed how typewriter can be written completely on the top line of the keyboard, always heard and believed the rumour that this was to help the salesmen sell them in the early days by showing how easy it was to use. Sean
  6. I want to say Printing Press but it relies on so many other inventions to be invented in the first place. That is true of all inventions though except the most basic. So I will go with music. Sean
  7. My first thought was ♠Q since it is a problem. We all get problemitis, as soon as a hand is posted, there must be something really clever to do. At the table I would probably lead ♥Q. Sean
  8. I think there should be 4 categories here. Female and male contemporary. Female and male all-time. Sean
  9. I have a weird one for you... Does anyone watch Iron Chef? Sean

    :)

http://www.darwinawards.com/ this one is good value also. Sean
  11. Whilst I see your point, a person who posts here regularly had virtually no experience and has become one of the better directors through exposure to these forums and through constantly asking advice. However this person is different, they are humble. Many TDs are on an ego trip. Instead of black and white, there is gray. (damn this is hard without naming the person) Let me put it bluntly, there are people that want to learn, and there are people that think they already know everything. Who would you want to be directed by? Sean

    :)

For you computer types, especially the ones over 35 who will understand how much power you had back then. <_< http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/ http://bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html Sean
  13. This will be a weird mix... Princess Bride: No explanations necessary. The Rocky Horror Picture Show: The music matches the vision incredibly. The Wall: Bob Geldof, an actor? Whou would have thunk it? Ferriss Bueller's Day Off: Despite my age I still enjoy him singing on the german float. Romper Stomper: Very violent. It was the beginning of Russell Crowe's career. Angel Heart: De Niro, Rourke (before he was punch-drunk) The Power of One: Although a disappointment compared to the book, a great story about apartheid in South Africa. Sean
  14. Saying the skill vs luck thing is so misguided. There are people that garner a living from rubber bridge. One very good Australian player kept statistics over a long period of time (decades), he would average nearly 2 points a rubber. Therefore for every rubber he would gain 2*stakes/100. On average then, this means about $60 an hour ($10 per hundred). Back to the luck thing, some days he would lose a lot, but the key is the average. On an average (8 hour) day this is $480 per day. Sean
  15. My concern is this... I was playing against Fred earlier and I had all the cards early on. I was up by a bit, then GIB and Fred bid 6♣. What is to stop people in my position suddenly losing link? On a more bizarre note, those that have played, might know you get messages about time, I had GIB time out on me ;) Sean
  16. IMO, the safest thing to do with so many different rules in different countries is to alert any bid that is not offering a final place to play. For instance some people play that 1♥ - 1♠ - 2♣ is passable. Others play that all changes of suit are forcing. The second group (myself included), should alert 2♣ as forcing. It is a pain but that is full disclosure, my alert on this sequence is forcing, may be a 3 card ♣ suit. Sean
  17. I agree also, sort of. When it comes to possible damage or adjustments where judgment is required you cannot rule. If it is a technical issue such as a lead out of turn, insuffucuent bid etc with a defined ruling then you can rule, BUT, have your law book ready! Sean
  18. North held a different hand during the bidding, but kept the same brain he/she had been using all along. Sean
  19. It is a real double when you draw an axe dripping blood on it first then casually toss it into the centre of the table for all to see ;) Sean
  20. A dealing machine and 22 sets of boards? *runs away and hides* Sean
  21. There is one potential problem with your request that I can see, I have often had two requests from a table (not for a sub), which have had wildly different versions of events. How would you combine this into one message? Have you less information not knowing both reasons for the call? I think what you are talking about is when you get three calls for someone not there, but not fully disconnected yet. This could be solved in another way. We add another button to the TD call dialog box, "No response", these could be collated into one call. Other ones cannot. Sean
  22. I bet he opened 1♣ instead of 1♦ beacuse he was going to show how strong his hand was next time around by reversing :P Just think Ben, you still would have had a dilemna when he doublecrossed you and didn't bid his "known" ♠ suit and instead bid ♣ :P Don't laugh, I have seen this before, they read about strength to reverse and then forget which suit to bid first. Too much information too quickly. *sigh* Sean
  23. I voted Other! Since I have 2 answers. F2F, I quickly bid 1♣ and hope the 3 opps don't know the rules very well. This may give me a chance to play it! Unfortunately this might not work. We might have to pull out another nasty bid later on, we might have to double partner to ban him from the auction when he starts to go overboard in the bidding :D On BBO, I guess I will have to go with 1♥ :P Sean
  24. I would like a new floatie, when you hover the mouse over someone's name. We know when someone is playing ina a Tourney, a Team match, kibitzing etc. It would be nice to know when someone is directing so one can decide whether to chat to that person when they may be busy. Sean
