  1. Yes thanks for the explanation on how to make 10 tricks if West does not return a trump. It does not look to difficult. Also thanks for informing me about the "play" option for DD solutions. Strange that I have not seen this before.
  2. I have not got my double dummy solver working on my new computer. But it looks to me that I am 1 off if West just returns a club for a 2nd diamond ruff. That is 3 tricks and I have eventually to lose another diamond. If West returns a trump I think I can see it being an unavoidable 2 off. Am I missing something? At the table West did return a club and not a trump. I was so distressed that I misguessed (misplayed) after that and went 2 off anyway.
  3. [hv=pc=n&s=s9h764dkq653cq842&w=skj863hjt2dckt765&n=sa754hakq95da42c3&e=sqt2h83djt987caj9&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=pp1hp2hp4hppp]399|300[/hv] At least then if I were playing in an international field I would be in good company. My plan was the same. Unfortunately in this field I got a round zero. All others declarers played low from dummy.

  6. I responded to this challenge again completing 10 boards ignoring that Jkr had played 3 boards against my earlier 10. I thought this would be easier than arguing as I have nothing to play for. wackojack 6 Jkr_1993 4 http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=ARDCHALLENGE:54f64110.e474.11e6.ab15.0cc47a39aeb4-1485509897&u=Wackojack

  9. Vul against not, after 2 passes, RHO opens 4♠. 2 Questions: 1. What is the mainstream use of double for your hand? (If you know the answer of course) 2. What do you think double should mean? Penalty? Take-out? Values? (Whatever that means)or something else This hand came up: ♠QJ95 ♥97 ♦AKQ8 ♣986 If you play double for penalty you are odds on (but not certain) to get a reward. If you play double showing values god knows where you will land. If you play double for take-out then you would pass in tempo here and be amazed if partner balanced with a take out double. OH! Another question. Any different if RHO opens 4♥?

  14. South knows that the singleton diamond makes the hand play at least as well (or better) in a 5-4 heart fit than a 4-4 spade fit. Therefore just make the 4 card raise bid according to your agreements. As it happens a splinter reveals that there are no wasted values and North likely to be encouraged to get to the reasonable slam.

  22. Back to basics: If you open 1♥ with a 5 card suit it can be 11-19 or sometimes a poor 20. A range of 10. If you overcall 1♥ with a 5 card suit it can be 6-18. A range of 13. Why the difference? The overcall has more bidding room for partner to sort out the strength in that cue bids are available to show the stronger hands with 3 card support (or more) and direct raises to show the weaker 3+ card support hands. Also when you overcall with a weak hand and partner has 3 card support a direct raise is protected by the LAW. The same goes for jumps with 4 or more card support.
  23. Sadly I will find it very difficult to find the time beween 30th Sept and 10th Oct so count me OUT on this one. Waiting then for Challenge event #5
