At trick 3 lead a small ♦ from dummy,if East takes A,you have your 12 tricks. If East ducks, discard a ♦ on ♣ & play ♠.You make your game irrespective of ♠ distribution as long they are not 5-1.If ♦ Q loses to West , you are to try for dropping ♠Q in two.

♠Q if not covered, ♠10 from hand to set up ♠6 as the second entry to dummy. First entry will be utilised for playing ♣Q if not covered ,♣J from hand.If East has ♣Kxxx & ducks all along, I will require the 2nd ♠ entry to dummy for finessing ♥.

Tribalism & faux superiority complex at it's best. Then no one should comment about anything good, bad or ugly happening in any other country apart from his own as none has the right to criticize others but gets itchy when some pertinent points/arguments are raised regarding his.

Bidding on misfitting hands

Someone in this or in a related thread rightly commented Quote At least philG was more entertaining Unquote. -
Let us consider other breaks apart from 5-0. For S9 winning rho is to have K10xx,10xxx & for losing rho is to have Kxxx,Kxx,xxx,xx. For SJ winning rho is to have Kxxx,Kxx,xxx,xx & for losing rho is to have K10xx,10xxx .Other distributions are equal for both (except Kx for rho where SJ does'nt concede a trick).Though SJ wins against more combinations but S9 wins for 2nos of 4c vs 1no of 4c for SJ.In view of 6c H suit with West ,I think it is more prudent to run S9.

Inculcation of logical thinking can not be compartmentalised i.e on one hand you will ask pupils to follow some absurd or bogus curricula bereft of any logic on the other hand goad them to be proficient in Maths(which is the most logical of any subject) ; does not happen for average students.

Strong hand over partner's preempt
alok c replied to nugatory's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
When North already passed once , either pass it now or optimistically bid 3♥ anticipating partner's hand as cyberyeti cited. -
6nt,assuming ♦AQ with East all balance pts barring may be 1Q/2Js are with North. There is no danger regarding ♥ stopper but ♦ may get ruffed if North has ♦xx.
-
No.If North is 4c ♣J,against a ♥ lead,6NT has no chance( theoretically for other lead it may succeed if ♦Q drops in 2 rounds) but 6♣ makes if ♦Q is onside.

How high do you bid?
alok c replied to silvr bull's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
You will understand if you think about playing strengths of AKxxxxx & 1098765432.And any number of balance hands of a set can be constructed to defeat a contract with a given hand. -

" ----.The old system was based on controls & it has taken me many years to realize that was wrong. The distribution is the most important thing & you should gear your bidding to concentrate on that first." -Benito garozzo Perhaps the greatest bridge player of all time. -

As an ex-power sector Engineer i can say that there is no such thing as "clean coal".Coal is inherently dirty(Ash content). This content varies between 30%(anthracite) to 60%(bituminous) to as high as 80%(lignite).In modern power stations 99% ash can be removed thru' E.S.Ps(Electrostatic precipitators),balance is dispersed thru' chimneys.Though E.S.Ps are very efficient, but as coal volume required is huge (around 400mt/hr-depending upon calorific value of coal used-per 500MW),considerable amount of ash is dispersed into atmosphere thru' chimneys.Generally power stations operate on high ash content coal as low ash content coals which are considerably less available are primarily utilised in steel & non ferrous metals industries.'Clean coal' means reducing of ash in Coal by washing in coal Washeries generally situated near pithead, before supplying to power stations. This simply shifts point of origin of coal ash pollution. There is simply no free lunch when you are generating power.

REALLY ?!! :o

 Apology for highjacking the thread.Ancients at least in India & Greece before Christ measured circumference of Earth to a reasonable accuracy.Still earlier people knew Earth's roundness by observing position of the Sun at Solastices. Here, i am losing a little faith in Darwin. How come people in 21st century, though you may call them fringe but they are measurable part of population (judging by youtube volume) can be such stupids(ignorance is different from stupidity)? Surely collective knowledge is in retrograde at least to some part of main stream(not isolated) population contrary to Darwin's theory!!!

Measure the distance between two fixed posts sufficiently apart thru air (theodolite, laser) & along ground (chainage) & see the difference.

Why? I will play an extra round of trump & then cash ♣A & lead ♥ as usual & finesse J.Depending upon North's holding (H singleton, small singleton ), i will lose one or two tricks.Advantage of playing Club this way is if North or South holds doubleton Club with one Honours it will be revealed & will help to decide Heart play.
-
As nige 1 said ,after North shown ♠Q chance of South holding ♥KQ is more.To be reasonably sure of that I would play ♣K before touching ♦.♣K, low ♦, ♣ruff, low ♦, ♣A. If by this it is indicated that North holds at least one ♣ honour,I would be reasonably sure to finesse ♥J.
-
♣A,♦AK,♣K,ruff a ♣,♠A,ruff a ♣,ruff a ♠, low ♥ to ♥J. ♥K98 will produce another 2 tricks.
-
Yes,somehow i thought ♥q was out. :P

deleted garbage.
-
Difficult to judge. Can we take 7 tricks? Partner is an unpassed hand. May be 3nt is making.

Contract was 6nt
