  1. I found the 'use flash version' in the top right corner which got me back to what I knew (and what worked). I don't know how I got onto the new version, I'd previously seen it advertised and ignored it. All that said, I know my way around computers and software and from what I could see that new version has more bugs in it than a tramps bed.
  2. When I logged into BBO tonight it defaulted to a new/different interface (Version 3) which is a nightmare. Stabbing at buttons trying to find a way forward screens open up and they're slightly off screen with the close button off screen so they can't be closed! I eventually found the Acol site I play on and every seat at every table had a no entry sign (a red circle with a red bar)! WHAT IS GOING ON?

    BBO

Starting last night and again tonight playing Bridge was impossible for me as typing text or selecting a card or any click on anything was followed by a delay e.g. I type the word delay and the letter d has not appeared when I am typing e and l OR I click on the side tabs Results and noting happens for a second and then it happens by which time I clicked it again and it's bouncing in and out. Nothing has changed at my end, same computer, same internets connection.
  5. Thanks. That's the first place I looked and I did see those tables, looking at the pic they look like lacking the robust quality of the Gopak (hence the price). As we're talking about years of regular use we want something of the Gopak's quality but we would, of course like that for the EBU price.
  6. My club (England) is looking to buy some new tables, we have experience of the Gopak (Lincoln) Games Table which are excellent quality, very sturdy/robust but light weight . . . but very expensive (£115 each). Anyone know where we can get them for less than £115? https://www.gopak.co.uk/tables/folding-tables/games-folding-table
  7. Isn't democracy about the people making/changing the law? Petition now at 300K up 20K in the last couple of hours :)
  8. That's simply silly, the reason it went up by 10,000 was because I sent the same link to my golf club :)
  9. Thankfully lots of others do not agree . . .. Since I posted this thread the signatures have gone up by 10,000
  10. Click this link to sign the petition "Ban all ISIS members from returning to UK" Shamima Begum in particular https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/231521
  11. Why does the EBU preclude some artificial bids but not preclude Precision which is pretty much all artificial bids? I ask the question because I don't know the reasons and I'd like to know?
  12. My Club plays just one evening a week unchanged for the past 60 years. We seek and encourage new members from the broadest demographic possible and specifically play of an evening (at our cost because we pay for room hire which we could have free during the day) to be available to younger (working/student) members The reason we might want to ban artificial systems is because other clubs in our area have lost members because they will not play against such systems not because they can't compete against them but because the game slows to a snails pace when every call is alerted and explained; it's disruptive and irritating. You (all) will know that there are different 'clubs' within BBO one of which is the Acol Club and the rules there are that anyone playing there must play Acol. And, you will also know that within the Acol system and within the Acol Club there are many artificial bids (conventions). It's not about old people fixed in their ways its about striking a balance between enjoying competition and giving up you life to learning every system there is.
  13. I'd be very interested to know why you believe that would achieve the same end?
  14. Is there a generic term for those bidding systems (like Precision) that predominantly have first and second round bids that must be alerted because the bids are not 'true'? Why? My Bridge club would like to discourage anyone who plays those systems from joining the club. Why? The majority of the members of the Club want to enjoy their evening and find Precision so irritating that they would prefer to discourage anyone playing that system from joining the club. So rather than listing Precision players and other similar systems on the web site as systems discouraged it would be easier if there was a generic term for those systems - is there a generic term for those systems?
  15. Thanks for the thoughtful replies (Felicity's reply in particular) I would argue (tell me why I am wrong) that the strength in any 'rule of 19' hand is in it's length and shortages (trumps). And bidding it as an opening hand is only going to gain advantage if those lengths and shortages 'fit' with partners hand in a trump contract. The statistical odds of partners strength being in the same two suits as opener's hand are at best 50/50. I would then argue that this 50/50 bet is negated by the 20% chance of the bidding moving towards a NT contract. And, the weakness of this hand is not evident to partner when the bidding is moving towards a borderline 3NT contract i.e. partner is bidding expecting to see a minimum of 12hcp AND I would argue that is a good reason not to open 1C. Statistics: The hand was played by 16 people. 3 of those opened 1C, 13 passed. Of the 3 that opened 1C two ranked themselves advanced; of the 13 that passed 3 ranked themselves as advanced.
  16. Tell me why, as dealer, I should / should not make an opening bid with this hand? I don't mean why I can / can not legally open because it meets to requirements of rules x, y or z, I mean reasons why it is sensible good Bridge to open or stupid bad bridge to open? 17. Ah thanks I see it now. I went into scorebridge and there's an option to choose how many rounds were not played at the end. Thanks again
  18. For my interest and education I wonder if you could help me understand/identify a ‘movement’. My wife recently partnered her friend who is learning in another Club. She asked me to look up the results for her and was pleased when I told her they'd come top. I then looked as the movement played . . half the room hadn't played with the other half (of course I didn't rain on her parade by telling her that). I do the scoring at my Club using ScoreBridge and I can’t find any of the movement in ScoreBridge that fits. Can you identify the movement / does it have a name? Here are the clues: There was 24 pairs (12 tables) and they played 36 boards with a N/S AND an E/W winner. All pairs only played 15 boards Pair 1 N/S played boards 1 to 15 Pair 1 N/S played pairs 1, 9, 10, 11 and 12 Pair 1 E/W played boards 1-3; 7-9; 13-15; 19-21; 25-27 Pair 1 E/W played pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
  19. Reading through the information and fabulous reviews on the website leaves me with some VERY basic questions; what does it do; how does it work; what need does it meet; who is it aimed at? I can see that it's used as a teaching aid; it seems to have a function for analysing how hands might be played / might be better played. Is that its primary function? Is it, for example, used by Clubs to generate hands (pbn file) which are then manually constructed and played and then uploaded with the results to the web site; is that a need it meets? I can see it's American, does that limit it to whatever it does i.e. limit it to SAYC etc., and not Acol?
  20. Update: Tom/Dick haven't played since 18th March (hopefully because BBO barred him) but he was replaced by Mary (yes Tom/Dick has had a sex change). Harry is still there now kibbing for Mary. . . . . . . He'll have to be a bit smarter than a sex change to throw me off the scent :)
  21. Q. Why would BBO implement a feature that calculates the Board Completion Rates? A. So that others can see it and make a choice as the whether they are prepared to play with someone who has a low percentage of completing games. But - I can only see it if that person invites me to play in a tournament - WHY?
  22. I am not sure what you mean by 'invites' but I can see that if I am sat at a table with other players I can not see their board completion rate.
  23. I have experienced occasions when some ignorant/arrogant players have left the table mid-play (last night mid-play whilst declarer). When I look at my own profile I see a 'Board Completion Rate' as a percentage statistic. Why don't I see that when I look at the profile of others? Why is there no sanction for this type of behaviour?
  24. I have reported it at least 4 times in the past month but as I have said, I understand it's very difficult and very time consuming for BBO to investigate.
