The opposition has bid 4 Diamonds and all have passed, without any intervening bids. Your hand: D: 865 S: A984 H: A782 C: K8

Larry Cohen's response: "Most tournament players use "JACOBY 2NT" in conjunction with their 5-card major system. After an opening of 1-MAJ, a jump to 2NT is conventional. It promises a GF hand and at least 4-card support. This convention should not be used by a passed hand and should not be used if there is interference by the opponents. I can't warn you enough how important it is when employing any convention to cover this vital issue."

Hi. If partner opens 1H and the op bids 2D, and I have 4H and 13 points, am I still permitted to bid 2NT over the 2D interference? Thanks

5 card major or 1 nt?
arepo24 replied to arepo24's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Well this was a learning experience for me as not one person agreed it is better to show the 5 card major first. I am assuming that the top Gurus like Bergen and Cohen would feel the same way. Thanks for strengthening my bridge brain. -
I always request my partner to please show me their 5 card major suit first rather than bidding 1 nt when they have 15-17 points and a 5-card major. I would like to know what others do and why? Thanks

What is the Rule?
arepo24 replied to arepo24's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
So now I have received the answer I was looking for. Barmar said, there is no rule. It is purely a partnership agreement. That's important to know. And Blackshoe said pretty much the same thing. So had I worded my original question properly, I would have gotten the answer I needed, so I thank you both. CASE CLOSED!! :) -
What is the rule when both a C and a NT have been bid and one wishes to ask for Aces, which must they use? Gerber (4C) or NT (4NT)?
-
Pescetom: I appreciate you honing in on my actual question. I should not have given a "for instance" question in the first place. All I really needed to know was the RULE for when to do Gerber vs NT under the circumstances I outlined. (forget about the bidding sequence and stuff--it's not pertinent to the rule answer I need) And I think you answered it pretty well. Obviously the rules must state that one must bid Gerber if one wants an Ace answer, because a NT bid will be quantitative under the circumstances. Thanks again.
-
I asked the question the wrong way. All we need to know is: When one is ready to ask for aces, can they bid Gerber when both a club and a NT have already been bid, or can one ask for aces with 4 NT? One person said they still must use Gerber, because 4 NT would be considered quantitative. Is this correct?
-
Partner opens 1C followed by 1D by opponent and you bid 1 NT with 9 pts. P has 19 points and wants to ask for aces in hopes of getting to slam in NT. Can Partner bid Gerber 4C after a club has already been bid or must Partner bid 4 NT? Wouldn't you think partner was using 4NT as quantitative rather than Ace asking and pass at 4NT?.

I know 2 people who still have the original html board and no casual name comes up and they are very content. Why can't we have that too?
-
How can I avoid this new Casual room and get back to my regular nightly game with friends in the Relaxed room. We are having all kinds of problems getting to our seats now. Very frustrating.
-
I too have a similar question: How do I get back my original html game in the relaxed room and NOT the "new and improved" Casual game they are now thrusting upon me? It just started for the first time yesterday. Thanks for any help.

Disagree in bidding
arepo24 replied to 120248's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
No question in my mind. I'm with your partner. You didn't bid enough. I would immediately go to 4 spades (law of total tricks) -
What's wrong with 4D?
-
It has happened to me on occasion. I suspect that they did not close the room off correctly to outside players and were waiting for their own player to return to the seat. (just a guess)
-
Very enlightening. To me Bergen raises are only done in the majors by my partner and me, but I found your 1M-3D support with 4D and 8-11 HCP a learning experience and I intend to use it. Normally, with Bergen I would have still bid 3 of the M just like I would with the 0-7 HCP, instead of showing 4D. But I see that with 8-11 HCP and 4D our hands together are more powerful because my hand is better. It may not be a Bergen bid but it is another alternative (if my partner agrees) Thanks

In Marty Bergen's book "Points Schmoints" he has a chapter where he shows how you could have 0 points and still employ the Law of TT. Even if you go down 2 you still come out a winner by stopping the ops from getting to game. In most cases though your partner will make the hand. His last quote is: "You like points? I like trumps. En garde!"

Really? That's it? There has to be a better way than sitting there being held hostage.

We also have 2 tables of 4 each. What is the difference?
