Void as Blackwood response?
arepo24 replied to arepo24's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Thank you. He was a BBO player and I never played with him before -
When I asked my P for a Blackwood response (4NT) he replied 5H. I assumed he had 2 Aces and I passed. When he laid his hand down he had 1 A and a void. Is this legal? Does it need to be alerted?

If a player has less than 8 points and has no major suit to make a transfer bid, can the partner pass or is it mandatory to respond?

My response to R hand opponent's opening of 1 in a suit: With 16 high card points and an evenly 4-3-3-3 distributed hand, do I Double or bid 1 NT? Thank you for your input.

Minor vs. Major response

Minor vs. Major response
arepo24 replied to arepo24's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Thanks for your suggestions. I don't play 2/1 with my partner and our agreement for Jacoby 2nt is 13+ points not 11. My first thought is still to support my partner's major first with a jump to 3 of my major and then see what happens. -
When does one respond with a very good 5 card minor over a very good 4 card major in the suit that my partner bid with an 11 point hand? Do I support my partner's major bid first or mention the longer minor suit first then switch to the major? Thank you

1. If Opponent opens 1H and I have 20 evenly distributed points: a) do I jump to 2NT? b.or is it better to bid Double? 2. If opponent bids 1H and I have 5 and 5 in the minor suits and 12 points can I jump to 2NT to show unusual NT or will my partner think I have 20 points and an evenly distributed hand? Thank you for any help

STOP!!! Hahaha! This is more information than I can possibly process. There is so much stuff out there that it starts to become confusing. I DID thank all of you for your comments and very fine advice. Now allow me please to digest it all and change my wicked ways.

I want to thank all of you for your wonderful advice. This was a true learning experience and discovered a bid that I will veer away from forever. Bless y'all!

Yes AL78 I imagine that is the only "safe" bid I could make. She said bid 2NT but I shivered to think what trouble could lie ahead. When all is said and done, why instead did she not support my 1S bid with a jump to 3 Spades? What is wrong with that bid?
-
Fair enough Mike H. I agree I should have passed my hand. Now what happens when your partner tells you that you cannot pass (as I did) her 2D response as she had 18 points and was looking at slam. I asked why she had not instead either jumped to 3D instead of 2 or better supported my spades with her A 3 times. She replied that jumping to 3D would have indicated only a weak jump shift hand. So I asked what she thought I could possibly bid instead of pass and she said 2NT. With 2 suits of 2 cards only I was afraid to go that route. Help.

You are on lead. Which card would you play? Why?

Wow this group is really a tough bunch. Not a kind or helpful face out there. With all the bigotry and prejudice going on in the world you'd think there would be a bit of kindness and understanding. Bye -

Yes, words like that. I have my subjective opinion about those things just as you do yours. Not to say they are the gospel. But I NEVER referred to anything but the K8 which to me was obvious. Get it straight Mister! -

Excuse me?I NEVER said the answer was obvious. If I thought that I would never have posted in the first place! I said not leading the CK was obvious. And I do happen to believe that, and from other posts, so do many others. And NOT anything could be right. Please don't put words in my mouth. -

Thanks for being kind enough to tell me that. I am fairly new here and frankly had no idea what some posters were referring to. I was just trying to show my hand as arranged and ready to play the particular hand with the trump cards on my left. What do I know? Thanks for making it simple to understand what others were trying to tell me. -

Big problem with the above: There IS NO A of Diamonds -

arepo24 replied to arepo24's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
The contract is 4D by opponent. I have the lead. Here are my cards as arranged in my hand to play the 4D contract: Trumps are the first suit in my hand: D:865 (trumps) S:A984 H:A872 C:K8 WHAT IS MY LEAD? Lots of responses all over the place. I would rarely lead an unsupported A in a non NT contract unless maybe the contract was in slam. Nor would I lead away from an Ace (which is even worse). As for the CK? That's obvious! My answer: I led the Trump Diamond 8. I could have led the trump diamond 5 but then I thought my partner might think I had a high trump card in my hand. -

What's wrong with leading the 8 of Trump?
