New as td i started to use A== if time is up as i see most other td's do (though i saw one giving A+)... the more i am on this site, the more i wonder whether this is a correct adjust. In imps it is ok, since 0 imps is nothing... but in matchpoints i start to feel this is injust if it is not the players fault they are late... If the player ends up with a 60% score the 50% will put him/her down... Could u tell me yr opinion plse?

Had we but world enough, and time...
Mirjam_3 replied to hrothgar's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Further u ask how much time a call costs. I advise u to make a poll on this one and i am curious to know the answer as well! I have calls which take 10 seconds and i have calls which take 15 minutes each and sometimes even after the tourney. So far i never made notes about them, but u raised a very good question here. I will try to notice how many calls i get and how much time they cost me, before i answer your poll. -

It is not only that one td is not the same as another td and even the same td is not always in same shape, it also has to do with the kind of players, the hands, the format of the tournament andsoon. :P Diffferent directors: I see directors who make a tournament wit 20 tables and ask for a co. And there are also Gweny and Frosty with big tournaments, running without any problem. Once i had a tournament with a very complicated slam and i had difficulties to manage all calls in time... Than there also tournaments i run by myself without any problem (proabably my regular Glamour since players and me know each other and the longer we work together the better these tournaments run). Further i have good days and bad days. On good moments i can handle much more than on a day i am tired. I know td's who limit their tourneys too if they are tired. Different players: Some tourneys have more difficult players than other ones. I am studying on this one but it is true. Most easy tournament i was co in so far was with Frosty. When i told her later she stated she was strict and it is possible this might be the reason. Tournaments with players who dont speak english, are harder for me than tournaments with players wit good communication. But this might be a personal thing of me! For me the most easy tournaments are in my own laguage. And these players dont disappear or if they do they return and i know they will. Also on special, little tournaments i dont see people leaving, f.e. the ones from cappuccino. If you go to play her acoltourney you stay. Different hands: Some tourneys run easily and no problems at all. :( Yesterday i had a tournament wit two slams in one round, both on same site, and i was very happy i had two co-directors... since we got many calls about missing alerts... B) Different formats: An unclocked event is often much easier to run than an clocked event, unless you give time so every table can finish the round... Clocked tournaments with limited time and ONE board every round are often most demanding. Lately i say no if another director asks me to co such an event... since i know it will exhaust me. Other things you never know before u r in it: Here every td can fill in his/her stories i think... F.e. Blackbikin went on holidays and i took over her tourney for her during a week. It was a clocked event and one day i cdnot find a co and 240 players were there... I was inventive enough to make it unclocked and i survived but still.. how to deal with such a thing? Mostly free directors come in in last minute there to become co. Isnt a td allowed to set up the event before he/she has found co-directors? Conclusion: It seems a good thing to use statistics on this topic but there are various aspects which play a role here. It must be a challenge for people who love statistics though and in general i support the idea. :) -
In tournament: I ruled by not adjusting. North opens with 2NT and maybe or maybe not after some time he alerted and explained it as 5-5minors. Opp called not for this but for the fact North didnot tell weak. I decided not to adjust based on the idea that i cd close case since N said sry and ew didnot give me the impression they didnt accept his excuse. In tournaments u have to move quick and as i can show u below i already was busy for this one call a long time and than i close and go further so i dont feel guilty about that. I just put the case here because i want to learn how i sd have adjusted if ew wd have asked earlier for one. What do u advise? If u think there is need for you might also correct me on how i dealt with the case. Case: My co-director is not very experienced yet so we spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with things. At a certain moment i get next message from him: co-director: here declarer didn't alert what points have and opps call me what to do ? ->co-director: are they harmed? co-director: i think no.... ->co-director: which board? This one or last one? ->co-director: who called u? ->co-director: i have to look before i can say how to rule co-director tells me name of player, in the meantime i look at what table the co is and i go to that table. Mirjam_3: eastplayer can i help u? what sd have been alerted? Co-director is new so i take over.. plse tell me again EASTPLAYER: My partner says he kept asking for pt count and could not get a response ->co-director: u sd tell me what board and what complaint i cannot tell u if i dont know.. Mirjam_3: which board and what bid u asked about westplayer? co-director: northplayer alerted 2 nt as 5-5 minors but no points there.....previose board EASTPLAYER: the 2nt opening bid was alerted after several mins as 5 5 in the minors, after I doubled my partner tried to find out ... EASTPLAYER: what the pt count of the 2nt and could not get a response ->northplayer: did u alert and explain the 2nt? southplayer: nie trafilem rozdania 4 pik moga przegrac note of me: this remark i overlooked (i see now that it wasnot english and i have no idea what it means…) westplayer: board 3 , he opened 2nt I asked what that meant and he responded 5+5r, i asked point count and never received answer southplayer: alerted 2nt? northplayer: I did not write that is preemptive sorry Mirjam_3: do u feel harmed ew? southplayer: 5:5 minors southplayer: yes? Mirjam_3: sure 5-5 that is no problem southplayer: where is problem Mirjam_3: but points if asked you tell them weak plse westplayer: huge error, I did not bid thinking I was behind 19-21 hcps EASTPLAYER: Well, north probably has a poor connection, and it took an extreme amount of time to get info, but I do not feel it was ... EASTPLAYER: intentional at all westplayer: not an issue of intentional tables switched since end of round came ew disappear and ns remain in same table i am but switch to ew Mirjam_3: ok ns u heard them np problem further and next time say weak plse (I see now i said ns but at the same time they were placed ew) ->new EASTPLAYER: ok ty ->new westplayer: ok ty westplayer: they stole contract and we are being penalized for lack of disclosure I think score should be changed ->co-director: ok solved i told ns ok and next time say weak and ew didnt feel harmed so it is solved ->westplayer: it is closed now i asked u and u and ur p said ok it was not intentional ->westplayer: i already messaged ns ok and next time they say weak westplayer: what ever didnt expect any director on BBO to have any balls westplayer: it was an undeclared bid ->westplayer: i dont have balls mr i am female and i am not afraid to rule but if u and ur p say ok i message ok and i close and go ... ->westplayer: further westplayer: my partner said I said nothing westplayer: it was a poor alert and a penalty was called for westplayer: forget it ->westplayer: not an issue of intentional i quote you ->westplayer: u wrote in table westplayer: exactly , I never said it was intentional but that doesnt matter it was a poor alert and a penalty was called for look ... westplayer: at the score ->westplayer: i took over from co and i came and we discussed it and u never asked for penalty do i have to quote u and ur p? westplayer: as I said before what ever ->westplayer: we agreed there north had to say weak and he admitted that and said sorry than i asked do ew feel harmed an u can scroll b ... ->westplayer: in table chat westplayer: we got screwed but such is life ->westplayer: there i agree ->westplayer: :) [hv=d=s&v=e&n=sa8h10d98652ck9732&w=sj109765hk73dkqc85&e=sk432haj86dj7caq10&s=sqhq9542da1043cj64]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] South: pass West: pass North opens 2NT alerted and explained as 5-5 minors East: x South: 4 diamonds All pass South went down 2 At other tables i saw 4s made for west and also 6s down and 6x down but i didnt look up all scores.

Bridge Monthly magazine dutch bridge federation Number 4 April 2004 For the dutch players: it is on page 28 In this magazine of the dutch bridge federation there is a page about ruling every month. Arbitrage (i suppose ruling is the english word for arbitrage) Translation is made by me so not excellent - Muiderheuvel, Muiderduin? "We know now the variant of the Muiderberg, named the Muiderheuvel)* The Muiderheuvel is an opening with a 5 card major but with no more than a 3 card minor. U are allowed to play this IF you dont call it Muiderberg: That is a protected 'term' (maybe i sd say term/phrase/notification - i am not sure about the english word for the dutch word 'term') for exactly (exactly written in italian) a 5 card major and a 4+ card minor." )* note made by me for you: a 'berg' is dutch for a mountain while a 'heuvel' is a hill) End of quote - Next he gives an example of ruling in a case a player opened with not exactly the Muiderberg. It was an example of holding a 4 card major so i wont tell it you since i talk here about the 6 card major. My conclusion: In Holland it is very common to rule if not excatly 5 card major is in the hand of the Muiderberg-opener. -

wow, i love you, Gweny, and yes, i wd love to have clincis to learn something, so help us or leave us alone :)

i did say that multi or a weak 2 was a different thing... this question was about Muiderberg and not another bid... again i asked a dutch player and he tells me how this goes in ftf bridge: --- Het is verboden Muiderberg te openen met een 6-kaart en/of zonder 4 kaart laag. Tenzij uitdrukkelijk vermeld op de systeemkaart!!! Die vermelding komt vrijwel nooit voor. Dus straffen. Meestal wordt een arbitrale score gegeven van 0 tot 40%. --- My poor tranlation is: It is forbidden to open Muiderberg with a 6-card and/or without 4 card minor. Unless very well announced on system card!!! Such an announcement does nearly exit. So punish. Mostly an adjustment is made from 0 till 40% So again i ask u: Isnot anyone out there who thinks a td on the net sd punish if a player opens Muiderberg with a 6 card major? ;)

Hi dear ones, Could u plse help me? Introduction of the question: Mostly i learned bridge by playing online so i learned the sayc system first and played not much in ftf bridge. Last year i became member of a bridge club in my home town the Hague. It is the oldest bridge club of the Hague and if possible most members are even older. Nevertheless they know how to play bridge! I had to study dutch acol more since i cd not find sayc partners there. So i learned conventions like muiderberg and multi. (muiderberg is a convention which u can use if u hold a 5 card major and at least four of a minor, u open 2s for 5 spades and 2h for 5 hearts) One day i was holding a hand with 6 hearts and a 4 card minor. I had to chose (i thought) between multi to show a 6 card major and muiderberg showing a 2-suited hand. I decided to open muiderberg so i bid 2hearts. When an older man - being my opp - found out i had 6 hearts he asked the director to rule and the director did. I was very amazed since i was used to onlineplay and i never heard of strict conventions since i saw sooooooooooo many strange things and nobody ever seems to worry much... After the event this man came to me at the bar and he said to me: 'U can play bridge and now i will force u to do it the right way.' I answered: 'I thought it was more important for my partner to know i had major and minor than to let him know i have a 6 card.' The man explained: 'Multi is not stricly prescribed but muiderberg is a very strict convention and u r only allowed to use it if u hold 5 card major.' In another thread i saw the muiderberg named in a case were the opener also had a 6 cards and i waited a few days to watch the comments that certainly were going to be made... and now i see.. no comment at all... My question: IF SOMEONE USES MUIDERBERG WITH A 6 CARD MAJOR HOW SHOULD I RULE? And plse use the big book... i really want to know...

another topic is a bit too academic for me and i dont like it there to go of topic...it is about td ruling on bbo. being a bit practical i thought it might be useful to advise td's not what they sd do but what they sd NOT do...i dont think the other threat is not valuable.. it is and of course more than this one.. but in the meantime this can be a thing to start too: it might be wise that a td does as he/she promises... and i give a few examples... If you dont say in yr rules you dont adjust, plse start than NOT to annouce in the first board you dont adjust... when the players already are there and they cannot escape. If u say you dont adjust, dont give me than an adjust in round 4... i am too blond to understand this. Dont add time before a tourney starts: i think it is not polite to add 5 minutes before the tourney starts when the waiting time was already only 3 minutes... and if u do so.. announce it in lobby and dont do this invisible a tournament is also a time event and not only for the director. Dont change the format after the players registered... it makes a diference whether u promis an unclocked event of a clocked one... Once i even saw the amount of boards changed... If u cannot follow your own promises you might be better of playing in fishy since Gweny knows how to host :D
-
dear Gweny, i understand their point since not all td's are good and as player i really think some td's sd and CAN be better (and i can tell you a few stories there) but i certainly agree w you that reading rules doesnt help to survive as td 100%.. you need more to be good in the reality of hosting..and than i dont mean bridge skills but things like experience, the guts to take a decision, the ability to get along with different types... well i am not going to write here the manual: 'How do i become a good td at BBO' The fact that there are questions about the quality of the td's here might mean some or most td's are not really that good and i think it is better not to fight about it but to talk about things we all can agree about...
-
my english is not good either but: 1. in the european night u will find much less lobby chat 2. you can put out the lobby chat (go to your name and put out lobby chat): when u come back u will only see the blue lines!!!! :D
-
today i started Glamour with 2 sitouts... luckyly i had 2 subs and i cd sub the sitouts and than i wanted to say hello to the players and after that i had immediately 6 calls... this is the most painful moment a director can have in her tourney so i took a breath and went to the first call... player a asked to sub his p xyxx i looked and saw player xxx which had to bid in pairs i usually (if i have time) ask the p if he/she needs a sub but here the partner asked to sub so it would be ok... and sometimes names are spelled wrong... with 5 more calls to go i subbed player xxx i was 2 calls further when player a said: u subbed my p and xyxx still has not bid...

Can anybody tell me how to find a person in BBO?
Mirjam_3 replied to hench's topic in General BBO Discussion
go to explore bridge and than chose chat rooms and.. there u see Find Person on the right of New Chat Room..!!! gl!! :D -
Since i see more and more dutch players on BBO i thought it might be a good idea to try once to make a tournament for dutch players so i created Hemelvaartsdag 2004. I made a description in dutch and than i wondered whether or not i was going to put in my rules. I read them again and i thought: well, i put them in... maybe the alerting rule is too vague but we will see how it goes and anyway if i sub they know they have no right to be replaced if they get online later. So i put the rules there and i started to advertise for the tournament. After a few hours a dutch player said: 'Do we have to follow yr rules? It seems not easy to do that this time' I reread them and there i saw: USE ENGLISH ONLY

sure uday, but now there are many messages to lobby without (Lobby) after it, so i have to look well which remarks come from table and which are from players in main... and yes, i have same as ben and today i was kibbing a table and i tried to send a chat to lobby and it went to the kibitzers.. so i said sry .. made VERY sure my message was going to lobby and again it was sent to the kibs... :)
-
i think it is meant to learn us count... if i host a tourney now and if i get to a table and i ask: 'can i help?' i see somtimes 5 answers and they all look like made on the table...
-
in a very busy tournament... :) other td, kibitzing a table: hi Ingrid, can you please get player out of here (t 0), he just asked me for that, thought i am TD i wondered about it since i know this player very well and he finishes always.. than i thought that it might be an emergency.. can happen... cannot it? and i have no reason not to trust the other td... if se is there she might know what and why and i had 6 more calls so not much time to chat... so i said to this other td: 'Ok.' ->Mirjam_3: Automated message: Find substitute: Invitations issued ->Mirjam_3: Automated message: Substitution complete. player has been replaced with player 2 other td: ty dear :-) Mirjam_3: wc player (Lobby): I didn't truly want to be replaced, I was just joking to the kibitzer I always believe in finishing a tournament that I start ->player: ok sure player (Lobby): thanks anyway i replace the player... other td: ooops i am so sorry to bother you Ingrid :-((( he said he was joking about replacement but i took it seriously, silly ... me, please excuse me for giving you so many troubles :-((( ->other td: hehehehe np dear!H all solved other td: u r the best !h ty dear ! (well it didnt feel that way and of course i replaced player 2 and said sry to him/her after tourney and i hope he never saw i blushed) :D
-
of course i voted the first one, since fame goes above money and all have his/her prize. :D i miss one category though: a special star for uday (leaving Fred with all the requests to get same, hehe) :)
-
if i run private tournament i sent the members an invitastion stating that there will be a tourney in about half an hour. i sent such a message by chat and i think it only reaches the ones who are at BBO and as far as i know this works. :) yesterday i sent the members of my private club the following message by mail (i used mail to reach the people who might came in during the day): 'tournament in 12 hours' when even remarks came in like 'i cannot be there, i have to work', when the tournament was running i realised that the people got that message when they entered BBO :) and they counted from that point in eternity :D :)
