FWIW you have the wrong end of the stick as to what I was suggesting - 2♠ is obviously not a relay as a passed hand. Nor do I play 2NT and 3♦ as game forcing having passed. I know technically it reads as though I did say that, but it ain't so. I was describing my methods in general, but everything is nat by a passed hand.

Psychological Interference Double with threats
PhilKing replied to lycier's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
Lacking any control, he can just pass. A return to the trump suit says we are off two key cards and the next suit should mean whatever it would have meant without the double. -
The reason it does not exist is not because it's so hard to work out that it is natural. It's because it's just pseudo-scientific tourette's aimed to help the opposition bid and defend perfectly.

I actually do something off the wall here: 2♠ = relay, opener bids 2NT as a default, unless extreme 2NT = nat GF 3♦ = nat GF after 2♠-2NT: 3♣ = 4♥, 6♣, inv 3♦ = inv 3♥ = inv (direct 3♥ GF) 3♠ = ♥+♠values (can bid 2NT GF with club honour) I hope this helps. Playing standard, I prefer 2♠ to be game forcing by an unpassed hand. Subsequent auctions gain more clarity when we are strong, at the cost of some loss of accuracy on one specific invitational hand. Has your mentee seen the poll results?

1. Love all is the "bidder's vulnerability" at matchpoints. For instance, if you go one down in 1NT, opponents can probably make 1NT (-50 versus -90), and most of the time you will not be doubled, so you shouldn't be looking to pass these hands. You could make a case for pass at game all, since that is the wrong vulnerability to win the race to 1NT (-100 versus -90). However, 13 points is just a bit too eccentric, but it's good that you recognised this one is closer to 11. 2. If you play a weak NT (which I assumed you did), then opening one with some 5422 shapes can be best. Specifically, when you have four hearts and a five card minor, or 45m, it saves you the dreaded five-card rebid. If you have four spades, there is no rebid problem, so the minor should generally be preferred.

I am going to give this exciting new position a name: an endplay. Luckily, I was rereading Adventures in Card Play, which has some more basic examples, so I had a head start. West discards a spade as does dummy, we play a heart and West is "endplayed" into giving a heart trick. Remember, you heard it here first.

Please suggest an auction
PhilKing replied to Vampyr's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1♣(nat or 12-14 bal)-1♥(spades) 1♠(various, but includes all 45m)-2♥(FSGF) 2NT(45m, 11-14)-3♣(relay) 3♥(2245)-3♠(nat!) 4♦(cue)-4NT(RKC) 5♥(2 without)-5NT(kings) 6♣(♣K or both red kings)-6♠ Pass Could chance 6NT at MPs. -
If my only two options were Double and 5♦, I would Pass. ;)

Have you considered not posting in the N&B section? :(

FWIW I think action doubles are pretty terrible here - you can make them as frequent as you want but it makes them even worse. Lightner is less frequent but the gains are huge.

I doubt they dare do it without 5-5. ;) -
Fantunes with limited openings
PhilKing replied to Kungsgeten's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Make 1♣ clubs or balanced and 1♦ = diamonds or balanced, then you can split the ranges. Your 1♦ opening will still be tighter than most. Within your original structure, put the 12-14 range through 1♦. -
An Oft-times Bidding dilemma I have.
PhilKing replied to Adam1105's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Constructing auctions and agreements to cover this situation is an excercise in futilty, since it can never occur against normal opponents. -
The Muiderberg Hoax
PhilKing replied to 32519's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
The "trend" is purely a function of how many English posters who happen to use constructive weak twos post on BBO. Visit a Dutch bridge club and you would doubtless draw an entirely different false conclusion. -
Who's the bigger lunatic?
PhilKing replied to the_dude's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
So is South expected to bid again on: ♠Qxxxx ♥Axxxx ♦Jx ♣x When we rate to make about 9 or 10 tricks. On the other hand if North held: ♠AQxx ♥x ♦AKxxx ♣xxx He should surely pot game, and make the spade queen a small card, double and remove a red suit to 3♠ as a try. On the auction as it went, South has zero chance of finding a hand opposite where game is good unless he is playing with a serial underbidder. It was just a standard partscore battle until South buried pard for competing. -
If you have to ask, then it does not exist.

Pass or double?
PhilKing replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I haven't quite figured out the system, but I'm guessing seven. That's about the yardstick for anything the equivalent of stabbing yourself in the eye with a compass. Jumping off a tall building probably warrants a four, so that would equate to 1♠ or 1NT on this hand. -

PhilKing replied to Adam1105's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Where do you find opponents who don't bid with ten good spades between them NV at the one level? This is the kind of hand where interfence makes it easier to reach 4♥ (and then 4♠x, most of the time). -
Who's the bigger lunatic?
PhilKing replied to the_dude's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would, have bid 2♥ on the South cards, which hardly precludes playing in spades. 4♠ was an outright blunder imo, since your values mostly opposite partner's likely shortage. No blame to North. Partner can easily have a 5521 or similar with insufficient values to compete over 3♣ whilst being cold for at least 3♠. -
Snap 4♠ for me. The hand is not good enough to dog it, imo.

I'm guessing this will go through. :P

What would Versace bid and what would you ?
PhilKing replied to MrAce's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
I asked my bidding guru (Zia) what he would do and the answer was to pass at imps and bid 2♦ at matchpoints. -
Garbage only Multi
PhilKing replied to 32519's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Range is usually not the issue with the trash multi. When responder is strong you need to be able to explore. The way to do this is to use two relays: 3♣ just focuses on range 2NT focuses on texture and is game forcing After 2NT: 3♣ trash with hearts, my suit is either very bad 6 or most 5s 3♦ same with spades 3♥ spades OK 6-card suit 3♠ hearts OK 6-card suit -
any good carding techniques ?
