  1. When you overcall, it is quite normal to borrow a King value for your bid, does this apply to make your hand worth an x then bid a suit
  2. I have a theory about spending your way out of a bad recession or depression, I think all the great Civilizations tried this, public money and great public projects. 1/. The Egyptians, where are they now (yes the Pyramids lasted but the Civilization never lasted as a great super power), probably a direct consequence of over borrowing and high taxation. 2/. The Chinese, after thousands of years they are just getting back on thier feet after building the Great Wall. Apparently by time they finished it, it left them Bankrupt and just like most public projects, was no use what so ever. 3/. THe Myans, They built the pre-Hispanic City of Chichen-Itza, again, they went bankrupt before, they could put the solar panels on the pyramids, as a natural source of energy, at least these were a forward thinking people. America and the rest of the world, should concentrate on getting their debt mountains down and actually living within their means, both financially and with respect to out Natural resources, which are not limitless, even if this means a lowering of everyones standard of living, If you were to think "outside the box" How do you think this will go down in the History books and how do you see the World in 100 years time? Whos in Charge? and what is the Economic and Social motivators of the future?
  3. ♠ T9863 ♥ AQ ♦ AKQ5 ♣ K7 for all bang it in 4spade bidders ( I accept 3 diamonds is not everyones idea of a good bid, possibly the worse game try I could have made, but, with long suit game tries agreed, I disliked the hcp being in the two doubleton suits for 2nt game try, though I accept it would probably have been better) but playing 5 card majors, I thought 1 spade 2 spade, 4 spade shows 19, I could not upgrade my hand (could I?) surely if I was vuln, then 4 spades is worth it for the extra game bonus
  4. http://zone.msn.com/en/bridge/ try this for the Flash version of Bridgebase
  5. I often disagree with mine, too, but you just have to make do with what you are given :D :)
  6. Question 2/. With no agreements would looking for a diamond slam be sensible, it was commented, that I should be looking for a diamond slam or 6NT with this hand, I took the conservative route and bid 3NT
  7. I thought I had bid ok, apparently 15 others were in game, I was just curious after a comment, I should just bid game, I disagreed with my hand

  10. Hi Fred, Not sure if this is the same in Flash, but, I was playing today and the bidding went pass 1 spade x pass pass (third pass I think) I requested an undo as the second passer after the x ( I am not 100% sure if I passed before the thrid pass or afterwards (it was possibly afterwards)) opps were nice and allowed undo, we then had to redeal as the dummy had gone down and he saw all 4 hands. Is there anyway to disallow an undo request, when dummy has been shown, i.e after third pass, not sure what to request, if I made the undo before the third pass
  11. There should be no difference between online and "s e r i o u s" live tournaments. oh yes there should
  12. I did re read it, I should have worded my answer better
  13. 16 of us, I have forgotten, my Uncle Susan
  14. Isn't inbreeding among such a small number of individuals really bad for the gene pool and for the chances of survival of the species? Or is 83 a big enough number? There are 15 members in my family and inbreeding, never done us any harm
  15. 1- I did not see too much discipline. Neither players nor most free TDs aware rules. Sorry, just play, keep yr mouth shut and never read is not my favorite. I would be suprised if they did not know the rules, I would not be suprised if they chose to ignore them 2- Software should not allow starting time change like on paid groups agree 3- Senseless table definition comments. This I find objectionable, why can't I put stupid comments on a table, life is to short, not to have a bit of fun 4- It should not allowed to create more than one free tournament nor team table in an hour. what if you want to run two 4 board quickie tournaments (I am sure some people would think "what is the point of a 4 board tourney (but people will play in them) so the is some demand 5- Tournament rules update should be a must. Some people probably dont know how to do this 6- I have no idea why free TDs do not create a web page and post their schedule. may be they don't know how to do this? or can't be bothered 7- To me they also should communicate with paid group managers. I have no idea, why on earth, this should happen, what would it achieve? B- I follow Traffic History Graph for bridgebase.com. Percent of global Internet users who visit this site really good in my standards. At least it makes me happy. I sometimes, watch paint dry, it makes me happy C- I want to see ticket order forms. I promise I will buy too much and advice my clubmates also to buy a lot. not sure what you mean here, sorry about that D- I want to see better days. I want to see 1st BBO Internet World Bridge Championship 2009. It's done on 2000 and 2001 on another online bridge website. that may be fun Free tourneys are for anyone to run that has permissions, they have lots of flexibilities, I disagree with Sean here, jillys tourneys are quite good and you can expect a good behaviour and excellent manners from people in her tourneys, she must be doing something right You are free to run yours how you want, I do not think trying to enforce or persude others to do things how you see them as being right, take a chill pill and do what you think is right for you and let the others run theirs how they want to, no one needs to play in a certain directors tourney more than once, they have freedom of choice to run how they see fit, as do you I care not to type even a word on my running tournament chat. I don't want players dictracted. That is your choice, look at the hornets tourneys, they are very popular and there is loads of chat, some people like the social relaxed atmosphere in there, they are fun, not everyone takes bridge as seriously as some would like, it is after all a pastime, hobby or a way of life, what ever it is, a lot of people keep coming back for more and while TD's run with no rules, adapted rules or what ever, as long as people keep coming back for more, why worry how they run thiers Do what is right for you
  16. Problem solved, they are being renamed "Robot Rewards" so your friend wont be able to find them now. (unless he reads the forums or someone tells him)
  17. if you take out the real experts from the equation, I still believe that there is a need for a rankings system for peoples satisfaction, as opposed to the popular view of masterpoints for money. I suppose no one has a pefect answer, I just had not seen this banded about , but I agree bridgemaster is a good tool, it has helped me a lot, it will help others
  18. the BIL, new players like to know they are improving, how else can they judge that, maybe what we have is not perfect, to the experts like yourself, that think they are god's gift, but I am sure others do not share your opinions quite as much as you think
  19. a few more probably sobered up now roger, perhaps, you will grow up next and do us all a favour  I actually believe more people than you think care aboutassessing thier skill levels, especially lower down the scale, people like a goal to go for, something you seem to miss with your post
  20. like I said just an idea, I thought if you excluded the blatent liars, then maybe it could work. just a thought, I had not thought of using absolute loser on the rankings, that slipped my mind
  21. further thought the questions could even be trialed on here first for others views on if they are really applicable and some questions could be generic ones based on popular conventions I do appreciate that sometimes there is not a correct definative answer, so maybe there will be more than one answer to a question, I did say there may be issues anyway thats enough thinking for one day back to the beer
  22. Hi, I had a thought (a rare thing indeed) a possible way to rank yourself on BBO would be via a quiz Level 1, 2, 3 ( you decide the level the questions are set at, this is just an example of my idea) (that could be used for BBO self ratings) and yes it will have issues, this is just an idea. a polish club expert of that country could devise sensible questions relating to that system etc etc other possible things to consider, is sayc questions, 2/1 questions. acol, polish club etc etc. you could rank yourself expert if you pass level 3 in 3 different systems or something of that nature, it would take a bit of working out, but I am sure someone like Ben, mikeh, Francis( a multitude of people on the forums are capable of doing this) or one of the younger ones jlall etc could pose the questions level 1 question i.e what are the continuations of stayman level 2 question i.e. what card do you return from your partners lead if you play attitude level 3 question i.e. what bid do you make using lebensohl over partners reverse (give a bidding example 10 questions 3 levels and also you can rank it against each system that anyone plays Whilst I realise that an expert could be only ever playing precision, fill in your profile expert and in notes precision expert only or something like Expert all systems ? intermediate cant answer level two questions yet? if people take the quizzes, then there is a more realistic chance that they will self rate more accuratley (though shoot me down in flames if you disagree with this) perhaps by not being able to answer the questions will make people think, they dont know as much as they think they know, in a nice way that gets them thinking and yes there will always be people that will cheat, but over all Fred could post the questions on the site and attach peoples results to it for thier first attempt
  23. a classic ending to a post, one to tell the kids about when you grow up
  24. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/telecoms/silentfaqs/ This may help, call centres are automated to push the telephonists to peak performance, they have quite detailed work rules i.e. number of calls made per hour and other metrics they use, I used to run a shift for a secure bureau in Northampton ( a very reputable firm whos main clients were banks). The staff turnover is collosal, due to the high intensity of volume calls they have to make and answer (whilst I am not saying this company did anything untoward) the principal of how well run call centres is the same, volume of call equals sales/results) push to the max all the time, stress stress stress for staff and a numbers game for the call centre. Davids example is what I was on about and yours appears to be automated call generation and staff not keeping up with the volume or speed, but they all have the same purpose.. maximising sales calls where they say the office is shut try back later , would you prefer they say, this is a spam call, ignore us if you like we are SO and SO company.straight to the trading standards with that one,,,,,, thats why they don't tell you who they are and they dont give a number out as everyone would jam thier lines calling them w******S (I know I would) There should be a law against it
