  1. Reading that article made it appear that the reason for the news blackout is that such things improve the chances that the journalist will be returned alive. With all due respect to Richard Engel and hopes for his safe return, I find that incredible hypocritical.
  2. I find it pretty easy to disbelieve most everything you say. Including this. :D
  3. Ok? With regards to atheists having a personal moral code that is just as violated by these mass murders as it is for anyone from a religious background, I don't see your point. Can you elaborate?
  4. [hv=pc=n&s=shqj72dkt86cqj985&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=p1np3cd3dp3hp4sppdppp]133|200[/hv] 1nt = 15-17 3♣ = Puppet x = lead directing 3♦ = Have at least 1 4 card major 3♥ = I have 4 spades 4♠ = To play Was the last double risky or a good match point move. My thought was that they have a 5-0 break and are probably going down but so is everyone else and I want to beat everyone else. Also my double might cause them to misplay the hand, playing me for the long spades. It almost made, down only 1, my K♦ was offside.
  5. At risk of looking like an utter beginner, why? Is it the single spade stopper? Is it that s/he plays 1nt in that situation as 15+ balanced? Is it the failure to just bid some number of diamonds?
  6. They still don't play with randoms.
  7. Playing upside down attitude and standard count. [hv=pc=n&s=s982ht8532d65c865&e=sqj643hjdk3caj932&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=1np2hp2sp3np4sppp]266|200[/hv] Partner leads the A♦ Do you give count or attitude?
  8. I hate English that I can not parse, no matter how many times I read it.
  9. No matter what I say as regards to whether or not Edison did any innovative research, you will nitpick about irrelevant details that have no bearing on the topic. It doesn't matter that Edison wasn't personally commercially successful, his research led to commercial success. I have no idea how research was funded at English Universities back in the day, but when I think of government funded research, I think of the government funding someone for a specific result, not funding someone for whatever they happen to want to work on. We seem to have a different idea on what the word innovation means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innovation
  10. You are nitpicking. Everything fails(eventually) and it was privately funded research and development that led to a commercial product, even if it was incrementally improved and supplanted upon by Westinghouse shortly thereafter.
  11. Edison improved both to the point that they became commercially viable. He didn't take an existing commercial product and incrementally improve it. He took a commercial non entity and made them a commercial success. Regardless, even if we discount Edison, the earlier research and development of both products was not government funded, so far as I know.
  12. Ugh, I agree with you, but I can't help myself. I think you listed light bulb instead of telephone. Also, I thought electricity generation was also done by Edison.
  13. Private just means they don't want you to know what they think of their own skill level. You can huff and puff about it all you want, but its their choice, not yours.
  14. It will take a lot more then central government oversight to overcomes people desire to innovate how not to die.
  15. Yesterday the club result hand records had an 8♠X sac -2000 as a par result against a making 7nt. Actually I can post the handrecord, they have them online http://www.eastsidebridgecenter.com/data/HandRecords/121202A.pdf board 28.
  16. There are some serious idealistic downsides with going towards electing representatives proportionally. You lose the concept of having your own individual local representative. This is a powerful concept. However, with the extreme form of gerrymandering that exists today, with a large portion of the population being intentionally disenfranchised, that concept is already lost. You are not grouping similar people with similar concerns so that they can elect a representative to represent them. You are grouping people in such an absurd and bizarre ways that has nothing to do with their local political identity but rather with the numerical count that each party can achieve at the national level. Idealism be damned, not worth having to put up with this absurd reality, fully support going towards electing representatives proportionally. The reality is that this will probably actually better serve local politicians better, as you wouldn't be able to dilute their chances by splitting their political base into multiple districts.
  17. Doubling 2♣ would have shown clubs, passing denied good ♣. Not discussed specifically other then the meta agreement that doubling artificial bids shows the suit bid.
  18. The answer is always "whatever you agreed it is". I wouldn't be asking if we had an agreement :)
  19. I am agnostic and anti-religious, however this problem is still nonsense :) I am sure in a Universe with souls and an omniscient Christian God that God could manage to ensoul an embryo with 2 souls and then cause each soul to go its respective twin when the embryo splits. Of course, two souls can't be in the same body and if you look at the embryo as an atomic unit you may think you have a problem, especially when the embryo is still a single cell. However this is a non problem, the embryo is actually two bodies combined, we know this because it will in fact split into two separate bodies. A single celled embryo is composed of billions of atoms, some of those atoms belong to one twin, some to the other. I am sure the fictional Christian God can keep the two souls associated with the correct atoms.
  20. 2/1 match points. [hv=pc=n&s=s64ha9643da3cqt97&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=pp1hp1sppd2dp]133|200[/hv] Your bid?
  21. [hv=d=s&v=b&b=7&a=1nd2cp2sppdp]133|100[/hv] The 1nt was 11-15, 2♣ was staymen, the first double was discussed and agreed as penalty. The question is, what is the 2nd double.
  22. I doubt the average employee at kraft foods is making 2.5 million annually.
  23. Hell, I only include players who have played with ME! That is a basic requirement to be a great bridge player. At least to me :)
  24. As I am not seeing it, I am going to go with yes. As I have no ad-blocked installed on this machine, I have no earthly idea why.
