Fertility can be taken two ways. How easy it is for you to have children. How many children you actually have. You two are assuming different uses.

This person does not understand atheism. And it seems that he is a theist mainly so that he can avoid much of the pain of loss by believing that his loved ones have gone to heaven and he will see them again someday. Well, I admit I'd be really pleased to believe that. It is a shame the odds are vanishingly small... Yes, I did find that statement to be incredible naïve and highly offensive. I only mostly didn't disagree and as I wasn't responding to the author I choose to ignore it.

I find it difficult to believe that you can just board a train and start it running. It seems more likely the engineer left the equivalent of the key in place and she might even have accidently started it and then had no idea how to stop.

I am not sure you are really disagreeing, you find atheist more genuine and thus more consoling in such situations, fair enough. If you bought into the theist fairy tale, I am sure you would find theist's genuine and their story consoling as well. If you treat both points of view equally, I still have to say the theist story is better, as we both reject it, it is not at all consoling. This is a result of your rejection of their core point of view, not as a result of theist's being bad at consoling people, many happen to be very good at it.

I have now! Dunno that I actually disagree all that much. Theism certainty has a better story when it comes to the afterlife and consoling people through death. Of course, that is just what it is, a story. Far less realistic then making plans to spend your lottery winnings when buying your ticket(and less intelligent). But it is a better story, as stories go.

While I do ascribe to concerns about global warming, I believe any substantive increase in global disasters is still mostly the result of there simple being more people in more places for bad weather to happen too.

It is shocking. That you think it is shocking is progress. 500 years ago, you wouldn't have. 3000 years ago your God was rewarding his follower(Lot) for offering up his daughters to be raped by strangers. This story was actually one of the most shocking things I read as a kid and went a long way to convincing me that the Bible was morally bankrupt. New Testament or not, any God that ever did such things is despicable. This and the genocide of the Canaanites and the story of the prophet who called upon God to punish children that were taunting him for being bald and God responded by sending bears to maul 42 of them. Going to Sunday school made me feel sick after reading those stories.

For me, one of the things that separate man from all other living things is that we are capable of giving purpose to our lives and yes if you fail to achieve your goals you failed to achieve your goals and death does end it all. Fortunately we are not bound by the goals of our youth and are free to change them as we age. No one achieves all their goals and no one here has failed to achieve any. For those that have lived a long life, their life will be filled with many successes. Many failures too, as to be expected, but lets celebrate the successes instead of dwelling on the failures.

Generically, the purpose of life is to procreate. Specifically and ideally the purpose of any individual life is what ever they want it to be. For you that is to glorify God. A god who apparently created a 13.7 Billion year old Universe with 100 Billion galaxies sprinkled across the visible Universe that spans a mere 93 billion lightyears. Each galaxy containing about 100 billion stars. And which thanks to Kepler we now reasonable suspect that the planets out number the stars. Yet the God capable of this and so much more, needs you to glorify him. I guess that makes sense to you.

My views have changed over time, I assume this is so with most. Perhaps never as a direct and immediate result of a conversation with someone trying to change my mind, so in a sense you are right, but all those collections of conversations has over timed formed much of the basis of how I view the world so in a very real sense, you are wrong. This is of course only in reference to soft subjects, rather easy to change my mind over factual subjects with simple proofs. I would state that the two positions, the world being 4.5 billion years old and a God that exists outside time and space calling into existence a 4.5 billion year old world 6 thousand years ago, are equivalent. In both cases, by the laws of physics, the world is 4.5 billion years old. Heck, everything before this point in time could be a memory manufactured by god as he called into existence the world a fraction of a second ago. If so, how old are you? Are you a fraction of a second old or are you the age you recall yourself to be?

If the image is reversed, the movement would be the reverse of what you felt like you were doing.

If the brain didn't reverse the image, it would be very noticable. Merely waving my hand in front if my face would look odd, moving it up while seing it go down etc. With respect to colors, probably impossible to notice directly, but I wonder if the way different colors interact with each other would still work out. Especially given that light mixes differently than paint.

As grim as the reality of that would be, I can't help but be intrigued.
