A very disappointing response so far from Forum members - not one reply so far ;) Is nobody watching the Generali? Lets try again - I've managed to get most of the names myself or from friends - I'm just missing from Session 2 : bds 1/2, 5/6 and 9/10 So if you have these or know where I might get them please contact me Denis

Unfortunately the BBO software still appears unable to include player names in the recorded lin files of pairs or individual events such as the Generali Masters. However the files can be manually edited to input this info. I am hoping to produce these for Nikos Sarantakos' site for this year's event but won't be at my PC for all the sessions. I'd be grateful for any help I can get -so if you are watching a session please write down the N/S and E/W player names for each 2-board stage and email them to me - even if you don't watch all 24 boards of a session. TIA Denis

You could try Richard Pavlicek - there's a lotabout instant MP games on his site. In fact I think he used to produce the hands/booklets for the ACBL - maybe he still does it. Denis

Goren's (edited by Robert B Ewen) "Precision system of Contract Bridge Bidding" is a good introduction to the system and has lots of example hands. Denis

Hmmm - Interesting : If I left click the file to open it directly it works fine as Ben says ie 3DE shows as 3DE= and 3NW shows as 3NW= and the correct scores and Imps are shown. However if I right click and open with NetBridgeVu, I just see 3DE and 3NW without scores or Imps. I'll look into it but if anyone can point me in the right direction quickly - yes please! Denis
-
Thanks Fred But NetBridgeVu.exe doesn't assume anything (for the lin file stored to hard disk) - so it means the rs| line has to be edited manually if looking at the match later - easy enough to do as long as it is known that that it is just the "=" sign that is missing. Denis

Hi I am watching Round 6 of the Euro Juniors - mid way through match. I've just checked the scores (rs| line) on the lin file on my hard drive and there are discrepancies with the Closed room Movie window. In the lin file some scores are only shown as 3DE and 3NW when they are 3DE= and 3NW= in the live Movie window. I wonder what is going wrong as it leaves some guesswork to complete a lin file if you have not written down all the Closed scores ... or maybe I can assume where a sign is missing that it is always the "=" sign I've noticed this in other Euro Junior files - is it a software or operator problem? Denis

For me Bridge.exe is found in the GIB folder (in C:\Program Files) - Have you got that program Maureen? The BBO program is NetBridgeVu.exe which should be in your C:\ Bridge Base Online folder. Denis

No Problem here - Hope you can get big payers :) - I'm sure extra cash will benefit us all. Deniso

A quick fix for anyone who has recorded a Pairs session from Trondheim is to delete the pw|........ line. You will then be able to see the hands, bidding and play even if player names are missing. Denis

Thank you Fred and Ben It looks best to wait until the bug is fixed - manual editing (even if I had the names ) would be too much of a chore for a relatively unimportant event. Denis

I have just looked at my lin files of rounds 5 and 6 of the Norwegian Open teams and find they are completely useless. I watched the matches (each of 7 bds) so the file should be complete but all I have is (example of round 5) : "vg|NM Swiss Teams,Round 5,I,1,7,Macbeth,0,Ballangen,0| rs|,,,,,,,,,,,,,| pn|Olsen,Hesjeli,Tislevoll,Johansen,South,West,North,East|pg|| " What can have gone wrong here? My files for rounds 4 and 8 are OK and I missed round 7. Did anyone else record these matches - are you seeing the same effect? Denis
-
Thank you very much Dean :P - just nice to get as good a vugraph record as possible when so much hard work goes into these events by all you volunteers. Denis
-
Thanks mrdct for this info - would it need an experieced operator to know and be able to implement such a procedure? Denis
-
Thanks Fred - I thought the software would be able to cope with such a simple task. It is a pity that either : the operators do not know about it (and so miss the chance offered by your wonderful BBO software to fully record bridge history) or perhaps do not have enough support at the tournament to gave them the names for the closed room. but maybe with just 7 board matches they do not have the time to record four extra names - that I would find difficult to understand. Deniso

I am watching team matches from the Norwegian Festival in Trondheim. Live Vugraphs just from the Open room - but Closed room scores are given. However player names are not given for the Closed room. Is this a difficult problem for the operator or should it be fairly easy for the software? Yellows seem unable to do anything. Denis

Today I've watched some of the Swiss Mixed pairs from Norway. Every match had player names on the live Vugraph - yet when I look at the saved file ,there are no names - only the following : "pw|J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,| and more lines like that. What has gone wrong? Is it just down to operator laziness - can't be bothered to change the names as new pairs arrive or are there technical reasons why he can't input the names? Denis

Spingold semifinals hand records
DenisO replied to uday's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I stumbled across 3 segs of the Waqar final - an unscheduled broadcast. I recorded them and I've just sent them to yourself and Uday. Perhaps Uday will put them in BBO Bridge library. Denis -
Spingold semifinals hand records

This thread brings up a couple of issues. (a) BBO are still not recording the sessions and seem to rely on members to capture the lin files to hard drive if they are to be archived in the Bridge library. Other broadcasters (e-bridge, Bridgeplaza and Swan) keep a record of their sessions. Now BBO broadcasts are by far the best Vugraphs to watch but there is this problem of not recording. I think Uday has said it is on the "to do " list but I wonder what timescale. (:P Both e-bridge and BBO broadcast exactly the same sessions from the Spingold so it would seem that there was only one Vugraph room. Yet during the recent European Championships we sometimes had three matches with both rooms being shown simultaneously. The Spingold is a very prestigious event so I wonder why only one room - is it due to lack of committment or resources from the ACBL -or poor communications between ACBL and BBO? One poster on RGB said that the Chief ACBL TD was stilll trying to find a Vugraph operator on the Sat morning. In Malmo there were a lot of Polish volunteers to do the Vugraphs - I find it hard to believe that there could be a shortage of operators in New York. Anyone know the answers? Denis -

Hi Uday All files on their way to you - unfortunately SF4.lin wasn't Nickell/Jacobs - somebody had obviously written off Nickell and decided to show the other match :( Denis -

Hi Alan If you visit Kaj Backas site (http://www.kolumbus.fi/sackab/kgb/all_htm/KGBlinks.htm) you should find a link to Yvan Calame's utility for converting pbn to html. Yvan is webmaster (I think) of the Swiss Bridge Federation's site: http://fsbridge.nexenservices.com/ There you will find lots of tournament files in lin, html and text format. I assume Yvan uses his utility for the html pages. Let me know if you have any problems as I think I have the utility somewhere and tested it out some years back Denis -
Just wondering what "wtp?" means Denis

Hi All Thanks for the great responses - 12 when I write. No doubt most have figured that all four hands relate to a single deal. To summarise the answers: Q1 - 1♥(8) ; Pass (4) Q2 -Pass (10) ;Dbl (2) Q3 - 1♠ (12) Q4 - 1♠ (3) ;1NT (4); Dbl (4) ; Pass (1) - did you really mean that KGR? Just a little background : The Computer Bridge Championships start today in New York ( in conjuction with the Summer NABC) . I was playing a few deals with the UK entry, Blue Chip Bridge (BCB) from last year's Bermuda Bowl/Venice Cup final when this deal Segment 1 - deal 10 sparked my interest. BCB bid it as : 1H - P - P - P (bidding system Acol ie 4-cd majors a possibility) So BCB is pretty poor in the balancing position - I'll write to the program authors about the Pass in 4th seat Also from your responses 1S is a must for Q3 - admittedly BCB nearly made that - it was a VERY close decision for its evaluation methods Now to to the real world Opening 1H - looks OK , satisfying Rule of 20 and also has 26 ZAR points - yet Lauria passed in the BB and Hongli passed in the VC - so are Forum members more aggressive than World experts? When 1H was opened (by Mechstroth in BB and Molson in VC), both Souths doubled for t/o - not as expected from the summary above. Q3 and Q4 never happened in the real world - but Q4 with that hand is a real poser, in that you MUST bid but there is no perfect bid - you can criticise them all and any one could be a great bid or a disaster. Just shows what a fascinating game we play - to get so much to study/ learn from just one deal! Don't forget you can see all the bidding and play for the deal in BBO at Explore Bridge Just for the record : there was no swing in the BB with both NS making 10 tricks in diamonds but there was a 13 IMp swing to the US ladies in the VC Once again - Thanks all for responses ;) Denis

Hi All I'd like your views on the following bidding situations. All queries are IMPs (early stages of a long match), both VUL (1) You are East (dealer) with S7 HKQ754 DQ6 CKT832 - do you open? (2) You are South (2nd seat) with SA32 HJ96 DKJ83 CAJ9 - RHO opens 1H - what now? (1H may be 4-cd suit) (3) You are West (3rd seat) with SJ9864 HA3 DT94 C764 - prior bidding 1H -(P) - what do you do? ( 1H may be 4-cd suit) (4) You are North (4th seat) with SKQT5 HT82 DA752 CQ5 - prior bidding is (1H) - P - (P) - what now? (1H may be 4-cd suit) Please treat as four separate queries. Thanks Denis

OK, here's what I found: Quarter Finals - QF1 to QF4 all Ok;QF5 to QF8 don't open/save properly im movie window. Semi-Finals - SF1 to SF4 all Ok; SF5 to SF8 won't save Final - F1 to F4 are all OK Presumably these have all been put in the archive by Uday - Could you please have a look Uday at the problem files? Once more I must say this is a great feature as it allows members to watch matches offline which would be impossible otherwise because of time zones, work or other committments Denis
