In WJ 2005 1NT shows good 8-11 and opener can invite 3NT with flat 14 count. This hand may qualify as a good 8 hand but similar problem can comes up when we substitute all T in South's hand by small cards, or substitute ♦Q by♦J.

Your action in matchpoints?
frank0 replied to Antrax's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Double and very likely you will regret why you're not playing rubber bridge. -
Thanks for this book I was sucessfully knock out singlenton K in one of the events in summer NABC this year. :) In my opinion it should be people's the first book for the purpose of learning card reading

I am trying to learn WJ 2005 recently, after looking at the text online I just tried to practice on BBO with myself(with 2 different id) and the following hand came up. [hv=pc=n&s=sq86ht97dqt72cat4&n=saj3hqdak954ckq86&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=1cp1dp1sp1np3nppp]266|200[/hv] North had 19HCP therefore open 1C. South, even with 8 HCP but no 4 card major resposed 1D. I cannot find a proper bid for North now, 2D is GF, 1NT lie the shape to partner, 3D looks like overbidding so I chose to bid better major, 1S. The bidding went as the diagram shown and ended up in the wrong contract. Which bid was wrong? (by the way can anyone tell me how to edit the title of post?)

Thanks for pointing that out. I just fixed it.

What's your habit on claim in off-line bridge? Do you only claim when you can take all the tricks(e.g. you have all outstanding trump, top honor) or you claim when you think it saves time(It cost less time explaining to opp than playing the hand)? Even more do you claim to show off your declare playing skill B-) ? In real tournament I claim to save time but usually realize I need more time to explain to opp than actually cashing my tricks :( . I make up some hand and feel free to discuss what's your choice in real tournament. [hv=pc=n&s=saqt8ha32dkj9ck32&n=skj97hk654dqt8ca4]133|200|You are in 4S after trump lead you discover trump break 3-2. Do you claim making 5 now or after losing tricks in H and D?[/hv] [hv=pc=n&s=sakqj432hakdk32c2&n=st95h43da54ca6543]133|200|You are in 7S . They lead a trump and you win in your hand, then cash CA ruff a C with high trump, spade to 9 and ruff a C with another high trump.C are 4-3. Do you claim and try to explain now or just play the rest of the hand?[/hv] [hv=pc=n&s=saqthkj9dakq2c432&n=skj9haqtd543cakq5]133|200|You are in 7NT. If you know simple squeeze you can claim at trick 1 and state the possible E/W distribution that can let you make/down 1.At what level of tournament are you going to claim this way?If you are director and E, who has 44 in minors ,don't understand South's claim what'll you do?[/hv] [hv=pc=n&s=sa2ha432da32ct986&n=s43h65d54cakq7432]133|200|Your opp plays 3N. After a spade lead south claim 10 tricks at trick one without saying how to play C, what will you do?[/hv]

Countering Multi Landy 2D over a weak NT
frank0 replied to thebiker's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
If you play in US, the easiest way to counter multi 2D overcall is to call director and says "This is not allowed, it's general-chart event!" This is what happened last time I use the convention in NABC open event. :( -
[hv=pc=n&s=sajhaqdc&w=skthkjdc&n=s32hdaqc&e=sq9hdkjc]399|300[/hv] South on lead, South play SA and guarantee 3 tricks

I don't find that much book introduce this auction, the auction goes like 1NT-X-any-? 1NT=weak any=any bid that intend to escape from 1NTX What's your treatment/general understanding on the bidding seqence?

Quick check on X-meaning

Penalty double, both you and your partner's hand are limited. -
3NT over 3♦ 4♥ over 4♦ If my partner agrees to play optional or penalty double at any of this position, I double

I copy the rules here, I try to find some example of each case but I'm not sure whether it's right. Can anyone tell me whether my example on each rule is correct or not? Or even better, provides an example for me. (a) Vulnerability exerts influence solely in that some situations are forcing only when our side is vulnerable against not. Those situations include at least when the opponents bid at or above game and our side has shown strength or itself bid game nonpreemptively (but there is no agreement on other cases). [[hv=d=s&v=n&b=15&a=1hp2h2s4h4sppdppp]133|100|North's pass is forcing only when vul vs non[/hv] (b) If we have been forced to game but have not bid game, competitive situations thereafter above the game level are forcing. No idea about this. © If we have bid game nonpreemptively, the default applies. Which defalt? (d) If we have invited game and the invitation has not been declined, competitive situations thereafter are forcing only as high as where the force would have expired noncompetitively. I don't understand what's "as high as where the force would have expired noncompetitively"? (e) A two-notrump opening does not create a force if the opponents bid. [hv=d=s&v=n&b=15&a=2n3sp]133|100|pass is non-forcing[/hv] (f) If a two-club opening is overcalled, responder’s pass is forcing at every level. [hv=d=s&v=n&b=15&a=2c2sp]133|100|pass is forcing[/hv] (g) No force is created after (1) our penalty double or penalty pass of a takeout double when the partnership is not otherwise committed to further bidding; (2) an opponent raises over our takeout double, simple overcall, or jump-overcall of a preemptive opening; (3) an opponent’s preemptive bid over our one-over-one response; (4) a strength-showing redouble by an already-limited hand. (h) A strength-showing redouble by an unlimited hand creates a force to at least a level dictated by the logic of the auction (g)123 is clear for me but not (g)4 or (h)

What is this double? TO or Penalty?

Penalty for me -
Double, when opp don't let us play I cannot control my emotion.

If you won ♠A and returned a ♣ you got -670, the way to got +200 was returned a ♠ or duck a ♠ The whole hand [hv=pc=n&s=skq8haj2d73cak754&w=s92hkt3daj96cqj63&n=st64hq9654d84ct98&e=saj753h87dkqt52c2]399|300[/hv] Multiple choice The bad result is mainly due to? a West's double, west should compete in ♦ b West's first lead should be ♦ c East's defense plan d Other mistake e Just unlucky

I made 5 on the first hand(they led a spade, and all finesse on) and my p made 4 on second hand(lose 2H, CK on), and in a pair event we got 4.5 and 8.5 out of 25 on each hand. Who told me in MP you don't bid the game below 50%?? :(

4♥ had reasonable chance on both hands but I missed both. NABC fast pair qualify [hv=pc=n&w=sk43h7dj9873c9754&e=saqt7hat853dkqtc8&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=pp1hpp2cdp2dppp]266|200[/hv] 1. Any comment about bidding? 2. Opp began with ♣A and shift to a ♥, now how many spades do you cash before you try cross-ruff? Or do you have a better way to play that does not need cross-ruff? By the way, opp didn't give you count when you cash spade, of course!

kickback convention discussion
frank0 posted a topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
For those of you know the convention, skip the link otherwise here is the wiki link of this convention. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackwood_convention on this webpage search Kickback or asking bid other than 4NT The question is my partner introduced me this convention a few month ago and we did practice some hands on this convention(with various slam try sequence). I do feel now we can avoid bidding a minor slam which two keycards are missing. However I also notice a new problem. It seems to me this convention save some space on key card asking but deprive some space on cue-bid. During bidding practice quite a few times my partner and I find, let's say, ♣ fit at 4 level, now 4♦ is key card asking but I care more about ♦ controll than total number of key cards, and we finally bid a slam with only 1 key card missing but lacking 2nd round control in ♦. :( Is the problem due to natural disadvantage of the convention or my personal misunderstanding of some basic concept of slam bidding? -
I sit South, this is the bidding at my table [hv=pc=n&s=skj432h72dj97c985&w=sht9653dq6543c763&n=saqt65hajdcakqt42&e=s987hkq84dakt82cj&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1c1d1s3d4d5ddp6dp6spp7ddppp]399|300[/hv] 7♦X-2 [hv=d=n&v=n&b=5&a=2cp2dp2sp3sp4c4d4s6d7sppp]133|100[/hv] 7♠ make, 18IMP to opp Any comment?
