  1. those sneaky vul 4s bidders far too often have a void (like maybe hearts which would bode ill for us on offense) and then there is always the question -- what is more likely to get a 5d peep out of partner x or pass. I think x will get us in 5d (probably hot soup) far more often then pass and since I have no clear directon I will pass for now and see if perchance p can back in.
  2. echo pass hardly a horrific hand but not really the kind of hand one would wish to x with. Change spades to Kxx and would be a ton happier with x. Ace is still too much of a slam card opposite my GF and unlimited partner. I have a much tougher decision next round if p x:))))))))
  3. I do not see where you went wrong sincerely-----your partner showed a complete lack of basic bridge bidding and it started with opening 1s vs 1d the 3d bid was ok the decision to go to 4s vs showing the 3 card heart support was off the charts crummy as you could always convert back to spades with 4 card support. The 4s bid also completely fils to show the short club which a 4h bid will at least imply. w bidding deserved around a 2 or 3 rating (at least they didn't blast 7n). 1d 1h 1s 2c (fsf) <changes depending on fsf game force or not>. but all roads lead to 4h.
  4. i do not want to read the spoiler (yet) but what happens if u duck a dia trick 1?
  5. an interesting perspective===we all know bridge is mostly a game of % and bad luck can have runs just like good luck as long as YOU (and partner) are happy with your bidding isnt that the main point of this game? Would you really prefer to stink at bidding and win because one bad contract after another happens to make???? Don't let the negative get you down. Well bid and keep up the good work.... i just read the spoiler--------------seee in long run good bidding will win out hang tough
  6. The right strain is always the most important factor and any slammish considerations should take a back seat to game/partial aspirations when there is an obvious :white elepahnt: in the room. Opener has already denied having anything substantial in clubs and with a club lead looming even bidding 2n w/o a club stop is doing nothing but courting disaster. IMHO it should be standard (if it is not and apparently it is not) for responder to bid 2s with the 4 spades and invitational hand w/o a club stop. No matter what else you may have reserved for a 2s bid (after 2h). The same problem exists if opener bids 2d and once again I would drop any special considerations y9u have for 2h and or 2s and make them simply a 4 card suit with no club stop and invitational. Given these are not considered obvious responder seems forced to bid 2n and opener definitely should bid 3c. (jallerton) This principle applies mostly to slam auctions where someone x a 5c or 5d artificial response and the partnership has to address :control: issues before going on. There seems to be no reason why this principle cannot apply to low level auctions as well.
  7. interesting greeting =- I guess it means he is hoping how YOU will act since his obvious cheat was anything but "namaste"
  8. I am playing against them tonight prefer to not play but will if really needed I will arrive around 145 to chat with any potential partner
  9. bidding 4s right away just does not make much sense since that kind of bid is preemptive. Starting with the neg x and later raising spades at least lets p know you have power for your bidding and who knows where that kind of information might lead us. the bidding will give p a strong clue as to how to play the hand and their HCP rate to be positionally improved while ours remain unaffected by postion. This makes a game "gamble" a much better proposition opposite a minimum overcall. If the opps do bid 5d it might be nice for p to have a say in the proceddings which they will never have if we bgin with 4s immediately.
  10. Keep up the good work it was a generally unlucky ill fitting hands (KQ opposite single club) and unlucky distribution (opps on lead with stiff heart and their partner with 2 entries). Don't worry about it and your "snickering" opps were hind sighted morons (feel free to pass that last comment on to them if u wish).
  11. X and I just do not feel it is that close. 2N accomplishes 1 thing telling p u are roughly 16-18 balanced with a heart stopper. The price you pay can be quite a bit however; wrongsiding NT - losing the minor suits - and possibly even the spade suit. Ax is ok but hardly great for control of the weak 2 suit. x handles virtually all sequences well and can even right side 3N. x = 8 2n = 4
  12. eye doctor appt noon unlikely i can play (and help defend title). I tried to convince them of the importance of bridge match but they just looked at me strangely:)))))
  13. Sigh now I read the spoilers and gave cyberyeti his + and Mr ace for posting a nice problem
  14. I strongly suspect p has seen too many of these wistful bids looking for low % miracles and decided to not go down any more than they have to. Bidding 3s here just looks plain wrong the opps have been silenced by 3c and game chances appear to be tiny at best. All 3s is accomplishing most of the time is getting our side to 4c and going down more than anyone else when partner does not have 3s to the J (which they need to make 4s a favorite to make). That is at least the opinion of this particular wanker.
  15. a LOT of (low HCP) hands players open 1 with look like passes to me but not this type of hand. I have transferable values in 2 quick tricks outside my long suit. I would have zero problems leaving any penalty x in (or making one myself) in competitive situations. I would vastly prefer a weak 2s over a 3s bid though I also hate the 2s opener. 1s = 9 2s = 3 3s = 1. At least over a weak 2 there is room for the partnership to explore. Saw a comment for NAMYATS but this suit is far too raggedy to assume it will always be trumps.
  16. remember this problem the next time you are east and hold the KJ when you have no good reason to assume the opps hold 10 trumps. Make life easier for partner and rob declarer of their shyster skills and insert the K. It cannot ever hurt (unless there are entry/timing issues for the defense and poor partner will KNOW it is safe to duck the Q the next round instead of guessing. Second hand low is a good rule but all bridge rules have exceptions:))
  17. I echo the spade club fit but I am worried about 4s.. in addition to spades and clubs p surely has some hearts which leaves little room for diamonds. Even though it is one level higher I think 5c is the safest contract and who knows maybe some greedy east with Ax AKxxx AKxx xx will x with those tram tickets :))))))))))
  18. if the south hand had been KQxxx Axx xx xxx would anyone have a problem bidding at least 5h? The bidding has pinpointed N as being short in clubs and they were willing (under pressure) to at least try 4h (missing the ace) vul. The 4c bid generally shows a weak hand further increasing the probability N has a pretty decent hand. Everyone can act when they have shortness why is it so hard to act when we know partner has undisclosed shortness???? I voted for take action over 4h but one action i would avoid is 5c which will normally be discouraging to partner rather than encouraging:)))
  19. ok but need sakuragi t show up at least 10 min early so we can chat about systems carding etc
  20. I will be around (in case of emergency break glass) but prefer to not play since I have played against them a lot lately and I don't want to wear out my welcome.
  21. :)) you gotta get some better partners---it has to be depressing watching them constantly take preference with 2 card support rather than leave you in a contract with 4 card support:)
  22. 1. void A543 K5432 A543 2. void AKQ2 Q5432 5432 3. void KQJ3 QJ432 Q432 HCP alone are not the answer and being able to conjure up a bid sounds nice in theory but unfortunately not all the hands belong to us and in competitive situations your p may decide to x and if you have chosen to open a hand like (3) above you will definitely feel some heat palpitations while deciding to leave it in or not. Rebid Having some defense is nice but does your hand have a rebid problem if p bids (the highly anticipated 1s)? If so It may not be such a good idea to open. Hand 2 has some defense but is it a sound idea to open 1d and follow with 2c? The 2 suits are truly gory. Hand 2 might be better if you decide to fudge with a 1h opening bid and at least get in a lead director. Hand 1 has defense a couple of reasonable suits and an easy rebid sequence over 1s. It will not work all of the time but there is enough there to make a reasonable 1d opening bid. I admit to abusing the pass card more than most but the above guidelines have worked well for me over the eons:)
  23. the minority report has returned and is wading in to piranha infested waters with a (gasp) 3h rebid. This seems especially important if this is MP where hearts will almost always beat out diamonds. I have a soft spot in my heart for those wishing to bid 3d as a GF (no opinion on the gadget since I do not know how it works) but this hand really does need some luck opposite most minimums to make game. Do not ask about my opinion of 2d ()(*&^#$) (some random characters). To make such a potentially weak bid with a hand with this much potential seems almost criminal in any form of scoring (and at IMPS it probably IS criminal). 3h = 9 3d = 5 2d = 2.5 2h = 1.5
  24. You have little to no game aspirations and getting to 2s vul might be a bad spot anyway. I see little reason for doing anything other than pass and let it go no matter what happens (unless p bids something else). system comment-- A side thought when u use 2h this way it might be better to use it as almost always weak OR 17+ and serious slam interest (which u will almost always get to show later). This will limit your power on most hands and and leave you some valuable bidding space when slam appears imminent).
  25. one could make a case that its a free x since this may be the only pair to bid slam. We have no clue how the bidding might have gone at the other tables so we have no clue how good/bad a contract 6h is. Best bet seems pass just in case this pair has somehow lucked into the right spot when the rest of the field got there through investigation. x might take a totally normal score and turn it into a zero merely because it feels bad to have the opps just get plain lucky. BTW if 6h does go down how much better a MP score do you expect if you x?
