[hv=d=n&v=n&n=sqjxhkq8xdj7ca109x&s=sakxxha109dkq109xcx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Playing with a pick-up, we had a fortunate result, on the auction: 1C 1D 1H 2S 2NT 4NT 5D 6D However, since it would appear partner misunderstood my quantitative 4NT bid, I can't really take all the credit. 6D is very good, 6H is fair, 6S has chances, 6NT is off on a club lead. How would you bid it?
-
Auto pass. For partner to have a penalty pass requires either a freakish distribution, in which case it is likely that they have somewhere better to play, or partner to have made a poor bid. Much more likely is that partner is broke, and that bidding here is suicidal. Move the queen of clubs to another suit and reopening is much better

Automatic pass. Partner has diamond shortage and yet chose not to bid. The chances are we're off two diamonds from the start, so I don't want to declare. We're unlikely to get more than 1 club trick, and I can't see 4 more from the majors unless partner has a perfect hand and oppo are known idiots.

Can I play Keri? If so, 3C, showing approx 4414 shape, GF Not sure what I do if partner bids 3NT

Err.... X?

Good standard of bridge at your club...

[hv=d=s&n=sa642hkqt6d6cak75&s=skj85haj4daq9542c]133|200|Auction proceeds as follows: 1d 1h (2c) 2s 4s 5c 5s Pass [/hv] Annoyed with partner for missing a good slam, you ruff the opening club lead, then cross to a heart and lead a trump. RHO rudely shows out. Can you still recover from here?
-
I blame East. If he didn't have enough for 3S the first time (fair enough) he certainly did the second time, and then West has an auto raise to 4S. East 110 %

Supposing you have this thought process when it is your turn to bid: Hmm, I have a limit raise in support of clubs. How do I show it? I know we play inverted minors when RHO passes. Do we play them here? Not sure. Ah well, let's try it anyway.... Oh dear, partner has passed here. Apparently we don't play inverted minors here. Still, at least opponents have kept the auction going for us. That's nice of them. How can I persuade partner that I did have a limit raise after all? I know, I'll cue-bid their suit. That must be forcing.... Is this illegal?

I think they day may come when this may be introduced, but that day is still a long way off. We need the current internet generation to become the bridge playing generation. Most of the people in my club haven't yet heard of the internet, let alone knowing how to use it....

I made worse bids tonight to be honest (although I did have a bottle of cider...)

[hv=d=n&v=n&n=sakxxxhakqdaxxcax&s=sq10xxhdxxxxxcxxxx]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] 2C 2D 2S 4H 6S All pass To whom do you give the biggest kicking?

[hv=d=n&v=n&n=sqj10xxxhqjxxdxckx&s=skxhaxxdkxxcaj109x]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] 1S 2C 2H 3D 3S 6NT South's leap to 6NT was fairly criminal, but should North take any of the blame for opening an aceless 9 count? What else should South bid at his third turn?

[hv=d=e&v=n&n=saxxxhkxxdq10xcxxx&s=skqj10xxxhxxdxxcxx]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding went (1H) 2S (3D) 3S P P X all pass You started off with 7 tricks, and finished with 7 tricks, which scored -500 for not very many matchpoints. Most people were scoring -450. Who is most at fault here? Or was it just bad luck.

If David Collier still reads this, would he like to participate and dig our old system out as well? There was a touch of MOSCITO in that old system. Send me a message if interested. Mark

This was actually a rules question - I requested a ruling on this board after LHO bid 3C and it made - 2S was at least 2 off. What actually happened was that 2C was announced as Stayman, creating UI. Thanks all.

Can I have 13 cards please?

Are the most annoying thing in the world. For the love of God, please shut them up....

I'm sorry if this sounds course, but my inclination is to tell all concerned to go away and not waste my time. No adjustment, result stands.

I used to eat very well indeed when I lived in Manchester back in 2005. There's a real smörgåsbord of options. True, the curry mile is renowned, but other types of cuisine are just as good a quality.

To avoid further thread highjack, I thought the issue of appeals deposits warranted a separate thread. My take on this is as follows. Back in my student days, I had enough budget for my transport to a congress and (just about) my entry fee. Accommodation invariably involved the floor of which ever fellow junior happened to live most locally, and dinner was chips from the local fish and chip shop, or pre-made sandwiches. I certainly wasn't alone in this regard. Certainly the concept of paying £20/£30 for an appeal was comfortably unaffordable. Yes, I know it's only a deposit, but the point is I couldn't afford to be wrong, otherwise this would sometimes mean the sacrifice of my journey home. Compare this to (for example) Janet de Botton, whom I refer to solely to suggest that she has more money than I. For her, I imagine, £20-£30 is a drop in the ocean, and would therefore be much more able to afford to appeal a decision. As a suggestion for an alternative, a small fee for members of an appeals committee at the larger congresses might well be in order. This would avoid the comments of "wasting everyone's time".
