Hi all. I have been thinking. In the sequence 1♣ 1N 2♦, with 2♦ as a Jacoby transfer should responder's rebid depend entirely on his strength in ♥s. Eg 2♥ if minimum with 8 hcp and no fit 3♥ if minimum with 3/4 card support 4 ♥ if 9-10 and with 3/4 card support. I came up with this schema rather quickly but I am sure if it is any good it is being used and if it is not then I need to know what is. Any thoughts on either point. All relevant responses much appreciated.

How To Find Slam In This Spot
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
I think I made the very rudimentary mistake of failing to show my hand was balanced and big. Over a response of 1♥/1♠ I would have rebid 2N but over 2♣/2♦ I guess I have to bid 3N yes? Once responder sees I am balanced and big (20/21 hcp) he can take appropriate action if HE thinks slam is on. -
How To Find Slam In This Spot
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Thank you for you excellent post. I will do what you suggest. However, this particular chappie has more playing experience with Precision and he plays 2N as 22-23, the Wei original style even though he does not use TABs. -
How To Find Slam In This Spot
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Thanks for the responses, guys. I went and studied my Wei notes. For Wei the auction may go: 1♣, 2♣, 3♣, 4♣ (showing KQxxxx), 5♦ (control asking bid - I could do with knowing we have the Q♦), 5♠ (showing third round control ie doubleton or Queen). Knowing of the big ♣ fit that probably gives me 7 winners and the ♦control giving another 4 and the ♠Ace means I get to a small slam with some confidence. Though the trouble is I do not know if I should bid on from small slam. -

I am new to Precision and failed to bid 3D as Wei would have me do. We are playing 1430. Once 5C comes, I just chicken out. This proved very costly. How should this hand have been bid (could you provide bidding sequence for both of us please)? Many thanks.[/hv]

No Trump Asking Bids Then What?
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
You are right. 3♠ in this sequence would show good support and 19-21 pts (hcp+distribution). 4♠ is 16hcp+ and 3 card support. -
I found myself with a goodish pick up partner who played precision. However, he did not play trump asking bids. I asked him what the sequence, 1C 1S 2S, would mean? He said opener's 2S would be "forward moving". However, that does not seem right. 1C 1S 3S and 1C 1S 4S have appropriate meanings when 2S is used a trump asking bid. 3S is invitational and 4S is a sign off in game. What does 2S mean in the sequence given if it is not to be a trump asking bid? I am thinking it could be: 3-card support and 16hcp only. Has anyone come up with any other uses? Much obliged for any appropriate responses.

Hello all, Wei presented a style of rebids for a 1C opener to a no trump bid by responder that are unlike anything I have seen in 2/1. For example, a 1C opener facing a 1N bid by responder would rebid his five card suit if he had one hoping to find responder with three cards in that suit and go to game in that suit. However, 1C opener also has the option of using Jacoby transfers over 1N/2N bids by responder. Which method is the most common: Wei's or Jacoby? Do I need working knowledge of both methods?

The 6-2 Fit In A Major
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
This is a good point. Implicit in this suggestion seems to be the thought of Opener's trump quality. If 2N denies 2-card support then with 2-cards I must go to 3M. If 2N promises 2-card support then without 2-cards I must bid 2N. My gut instinct is that 2N should deny 2-card support. -
During the course of bidding, I as responder discover that partner has six-cards in his 1M opener eg a typical 2/1 Game Force sequence such as 1M 2m 2M. I have enough hcp for game. I also have 2 cards in opener's major. The choice seems to be either 3N or 4M. Is it simply a case of we have an 8-card fit and therefore it must be 4M or do I take into account other factors? Other factors, I take to be: 1. Our overall hcp count 2. Our overall distributive count (hcp + responder shortage) 3. Whether I have stoppers in the unbid suits? All relevant comments much appreciated.

Unsual Positives: Keeping It Simple?
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Thank you for responding. I am looking to play this within the context of a rather old-fashioned precision. My 1C shows 16hcp+ therefore I am thinking that Opener needs to be 22hcp+ to make the slam try and will mostly be signing off in somekind of game: 3N/4H/4S/5C/5D rather than playing for slam. Likewise my unusual positive responder will need to take up the baton and move onto slam if he has more than his minimum 8hcp. I guess that would be easy enough he could Gerber over 3N and RKB 1430 over a suit and perhaps cuebid. Do you think this sounds viable? Your comments are much sought. -
Hi all, I am an Advanced player looking for a precision partner. I am competent in SA and 2/1 and am looking to learn Precison. I have played under a hundred hands of Precision but I have put in hours of study. I play: 1C=16+ 1D=11-15 hcp, 2 cards + 1H=11-15hcp, 5 cards + 1S=11-15 hcp, 5 cards + 1N=14-16hcp, balanced no 5 card major 2C=11-15 hcp, 6 cards or 5-4 (with four in a major) 2D=11-15 hcp, 4414/4405/3415/4315 shape 2H=8-10 hcp, 6 cards 2S=8-10 hcp, 6 cards 2N=22-23 hcp 3N= AKQxxxx minor, gambling 3x= 7 card suit 4C= namyats 4D= namyats 4H= 8 cards, to play 4S= 8 cards to play I am using Unusual positives: 2H/2S/3C/3D showing singleton in suit above that bid, 8+hcp. I use TABs and CABS. My style is old school precision. If you are interested you can email me or post here. gurgistan

2/1: Responder's 2N Over Opener's Major Rebid

Thanks for pointing this out. Should the bidding have gone 1♥-1♠-2♣-2♦2♥-4♥? -

Unsual Positives: Keeping It Simple?
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
I really like this. What are the steps for the controls, please? -
I have just come to precision and it is clear impossible negatives are inferior to unusual positives as interference may make them impossible to show. So, I am playing unusual positives. I though it easy: 2H,2S,3C,3D; all showing 8hcp+ and 4441 with the singleton in the named suit. However, I have come across other schemas online. I would imagine the simple one outlined above is the most popular. Is that so?

Precision: Playing The Majors & Ace Asking Bids
gurgistan replied to gurgistan's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
The Ace Asking Bid is actually a double jump shift but it is very old fashioned now. AAB: eg 1♣ 1♠ 4♦. It specifically asks for the Ace of the new suit but the responses allow all the outstanding to be shown. -
Hi all, I am playing a simple style of precision with a 1M opener showing 11-15hcp and 5 cards. 1. Can responder use SA/2over1 methods after interference? 2. How widespread is the playing of 2over1 GF methods over the majors by precision players? Let us say, I open 1♣ showing 16hcp+. Partner bids 1M(or any other positive bid). I now make an Ace Asking Bid. 1. Does my Ace Asking Bid agree his suit or not? 2. What is my point count for making the Ace Asking Bid? All relevant help appreciated.

2/1: Responder's 2N Over Opener's Major Rebid
gurgistan posted a topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
[hv=pc=n&s=sahakqj93d2ct8743&n=sq984h84dkj6ckqj9&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=p1hp1sp2hp2np3nppp]266|200[/hv] Hi all, I am convinced that responder's rebid should be 4♥ and not 2N. After all, he knows we have an eight card fit and around 25hcp. I took his 2N to deny support and put us in 3N. North has it that the rebid was weak. But even so, I think he should have put it in 4♥. North says that 2N over my major suit rebid tells me that he has 2 card support and not 3 card support. Is this correct? Assuming the same shape for my hand, if I am 16hcp+ do I rebid 3♥? All relevant help much appreciated. -
I am new to precision and would like to make a comprehensive list of it main varieties. What I am aware of: Precision Super Precision Big Club Roman Club Polish Club What else is out there? Many thanks.

[hv=pc=n&s=sqt9hk853dt3cakj7&d=s&v=n&b=15&a=1c2c2d2spp3d3h3nppp]133|200|Partner bids after the Michaels cuebid. I have no idea what his bid means so I pass. He is random pickup and Michaels is rare enough with little instruction on how to proceed after it if one is defending. When East competes. I decide it is safer to pass than bid as I have nothing new to say and if Partner is other than minimum he will let me know. When Partner rebids 3♦, I feel that with both of the majors stopped and partner showing extra hcp and/or length we may have a Gambling 3N type of scenario. So I bid 3N. Questions:1. What does Partner have for his 2♦ bid?2. What does Partner have for his 3♦ rebid?3. How good or bad is my 3N bid?[/hv]

[hv=pc=n&n=sa64h743d8cakt852&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=2hdp]133|200|What is North's bid? I very strongly think it is 3N.

However, if it was to show 5cards+, no major and game points in clubs how would it be done. My notes only have 3♣ as being invitational. To sign off in clubs, North would 2N I would relay to clubs and he would pass. To show a game force in Spades, North would 2N, I would relay to 3♣ and North would bid 3♠. How does he show a game force in clubs? Can he even do so? Quick note: we N/S are vulnerable (not that it makes any odds, just to be complete). [/hv]

Can SA Distinguish Between 3 & 4 Card Support
gurgistan posted a topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Can Standard American distinguish between 3 card and 4 card responder support of a 1M opener? Eric Rodwell says that it can. Can SAYC? I have several sets of notes on SAYC/SA and they do not mention any way of distinguishing between 3 card and 4 card support by responder of a 1M opener. Many thanks.
