  1. What does simply bidding 6♣ say here? That's what my P bid, and holding Kx Kxx Jxx A10xxx I passed. Was concerned he had a stiff ♦. Same result at other table. I think if I had the hand I'd have bid 5d, hoping that it shows 1st round controls in all 3 suits, but it is still tough for P to bid 7. That's a lot of faith.
  2. Wouldn't 3♦ be western Q? showing maybe something like AJxxx AJx Q KJxx?? anyway I bid 4♥, making 6 when P put down Qx KQxx Jxx A10xx. In hindsight, that's not really a surprise when rho passes, and I should have bid 4♦.
  3. [hv=pc=n&s=sa954haq62dckqj65&d=s&v=n&b=15&a=1c1d2d4d]133|200[/hv] 2♦ is a limit raise or better in ♣, denies majors, and normally promises 5 or more clubs. What now and why?
  4. [hv=pc=n&s=saj9652haj874dck6&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1s2ddp]133|200[/hv] what now and why? thx
  5. Playing puppet, open 2nt. Not playing puppet, I still prefer 2nt. Not good enough for 2♣ and I think 1♥then 3 ♣ should be more shapely. You have a more or less balanced 21 count and there is a bid for that. Make it.
  6. West's dbl is a mistake but no more than that. East's pass is incomprehensible.
  7. [hv=pc=n&n=sk5hq6d9caqt98742]133|100[/hv] all white, mp. as dealer, what is your plan for bidding this one? FWIW, if you elect to open one club, you cannot rebid four clubs over P's possible major suit response as that would show solid clubs and four good cards in his suit. Thanks for thoughts on this one.
  8. 100% of the blame to S for his silly dbl. And another 50% to N for thinking about leading anything other than a heart.
  9. I find the arguments for pass persuasive. We should easily find a major suit fit if we have one, and it might be best if P declares, and I can always bid nt later, but.... I do think there is more to the case for a rdbl than has been discussed, esp. at mp's and esp at equal or fav vul. First, how much better a ♦ holding than this should I reasonably be expected to hold for a rdbl after rho's lead director? Do I really have to wait for K9xx or maybe Kxxxx? Is the point of the rdbl to say I've got great ♦s, or to ask P what he thinks about trying to scramble 8 tricks in that suit? He can always say he isn't interested. FWIW, I bid 2nt, and after a xfr auction wound up in 4♥, down 1 after the ♦ lead. Pass wouldn't have worked better, as P would be down at 4♥ also. 3nt has chances, but, of course, P turns up with ♦ Qxx and 2 ♦ xx makes. I feel like I had a chance to turn the lead director against rho, and didn't do it.
  10. [hv=pc=n&s=sakq2haqtdk87cat2]133|100[/hv] MPs, non vul. 2♣ by S, 2♦ by N and E dbls. Is this a redouble? If not, what would be? If not a rdbl, what is best action now? thx
  11. Maybe I am converting +100 to a minus by bidding, but I doubt it. P clearly has some values, and some in my seat would have opened 2 ♥ already. So I may be catching up a bit. I don't have the shape for a dbl, and no defense, so I'd bid 2nt and convert 3♦ to ♥.
  12. sayc or pretty much vanilla 2/1. There are obviously lots of sensible actions available depending on agreements, so I was just wondering if there was a sort of "expert standard" approach here. Just trying to sort thru the pros and cons of different ways to play it. I actually bid 4♥ and it worked out ok.
  13. [hv=pc=n&s=shkj53dkqt642ca93&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=1dp1h1s]133|200[/hv] What action do you consider to be standard here? Regardless, what action do you recommend and why?
  14. I hate this one. Dbl, I guess. Hard to get 9 tricks before they get theirs unless p has a long minor or a perfect 10 or so hcp. I think the chance that maybe P leaves x in and we get a good score that way persuades me to x.
  15. [hv=pc=n&s=s8ha9532dq7caj984]133|100[/hv] Against silent opps, P bids 1♠. Playing 2/1 gf, 1nt seems obligatory. P now bids 2♠. Where do we go from here and why?
  16. I'm starting to agree that probably the best way to do it, as many suggest, is just xfer and splinter. At least P can properly value or devalue his ♣ holding. On the actual hand P would have bid 4♠ over 4♣, so you might as well then bid 6 ♥. If the ♦ A is wrong, and if P doesn't have the Q (he did), then there's no guarantee that even 5 is making. B)
  17. [hv=pc=n&s=sq74hakqt65dk53c8]133|100[/hv] Opps are silent. Partner opens 1nt, then 2♦-2♥. Do you make a slam try with this hand? If so, what is your plan? 2♥ showed either a min hand with 3♥ or a max with only 2. thx,
  18. Pass. I like the 5-5 so maybe I'd balance at MPs, or fav at IMPs, but not unfav at IMPs. Too much downside not enough upside. When I'm wrong it could be really wrong, not just -200.
  19. No real blame here, both decisions are close, but, FWIW, I wouldn't preempt in 1st seat with both an outside A and a void. On the given bidding I'd think game is about 50-50 as N so I'd probably bid it at imps, probably not at mp's.
  20. Certainly possible that S has led ♠ 8 from something like K108, AKxxxx, Kxx, x, but it's not likely. Even knowing from the bidding that it will be ruffed, leading a top ♥ is much more likely. If you haven't already looked at spoiler, try again. ;)
  21. [hv=pc=n&w=sj65hqj2dajtcak43&e=sa974hd95cqjt9652&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=p1h1n2h3c3h4c4h5cppp]266|200[/hv] Criticize the bidding another time. LHO leads 8♠. What holdings do you visualize for opps that will allow you to make this hand? Based on that, what is your line of play?
  22. [hv=pc=n&n=sq864hqj42dj7cak8&e=s5hat976daq8c9543]266|200[/hv] P (1♣) 1♥ (1♠) P (2♠) P, (4♠) all pass at MP, P leads ♥ 8. You win the A as declarer plays the 5. What now and why?
  23. I agree that this is an easy 3♦ call for reasons well stated by others. Results at local club, with some good and some not so good players, were all over the place. Your RHO held 6♠, and your P held something like AQ9xxx, Qxx, xx, Jx. FWIW, 2♠x was -1400 for an average minus. If you wound up in 3♣ (presumably via 2nt), you went for -1700 and a zero. If you bid 3♦, then in a few cases, opps didn't x, and played only game, and you got a good score. If they x'd, you were -1400, which is what I did. In other cases, they bid 6♥ and made it or not, depending on a guess for the ♥ Q.
  24. [hv=pc=n&s=sh65dqjt973c98632&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=2sppdpp]133|200[/hv] MPs. P's 2♠ bid should be disciplined 1st seat vul. If the poll doesn't format correctly, my apologies. Am curious as to whether you choose to "stay fixed," or to attempt to escape, and if so, how.
  25. Completely agree that the resp x here has just gotta be 4-4. I think E has easy pass over 4♦. W should x again, E should then probably bid 4♥, but it's close. It really is a pretty bad hand. All blame goes to N for the 4♦ bid.
