I don't think you have enough ♠s to bid 1♠ and are therefore forced to choose between pass and 1NT :P I think even JLall might bid 1♠ here in spite of the fact that his partners NEVER overcall on a 4 card suit :)

Hmmm!!!! Possibly a request to be doubled by the opps? :) Actually the only thing that half way makes sense to me is a hand with 3♥ and a 4-5 card minor looking for a 9 card fit and playing 3♥ if no minor fit is found? Obviously assumes some appropriate level of values.

I correct to 4♠. Partner rates to have only 3♥ so in 3NT the opponents will give you a ♥ attack which rates to be better handled in 4♠.

When you say something explain the reasoning. "I choose double rather than 2D because etc" gives an idea. Otherwise that doesn't mean anything. You are right choosing one over another is just a tally of preferences. In fact the double increases the probability of finding 8+ card ♥ and ♣ fit and 9+ card ♦ fits sacrificing the possible 8 card ♦ fit while avoiding the 7 or less card ♦ fit. The double also increase the chances of finding a possible ♥ game when partner is able to call 3♥ over the X. Most people here in the fora try to be somewhat scientific in choosing calls and recognize that example hands exist that indicate that any particular call could be a winning decision. It is the probablilty of occurence of these that is important. Consequently only simulations with DD play tend to indicate the probable best course of action. So give us the results of those simulations rather than example hands if you want us to believe that 2♦ is a better call than X.

I would never play because no one would play with me!! I had one of these yesterday I suggested he change his handle to "Molasses in Winter." Of course he couldn't follow suit in tempo when it was clear he was going to lose the trick. Connection is only an excuse for a while especially if you have been proven to play/caught playing in tempo.

Shortage? Has someone stolen from you? :D Well you don't give scoring or vulnerability but in any event I think it to be willingness to defend which means an appropriate hand for the scoring/colors.

quick slip him the ♥Q instead of an x and see if it still is the "easiest pass ever" :D Of course I agree with pass and would need the equivalent values of a limit raise to X here.
