I would have said that in principle a new-suit response by a passed hand is still forcing, but partner might choose to pass with a (sub)minimum opener. Certainly I don't think your partner with a 14-count should pass your two-over-one response. btw it's much better to show a hand in the usual SHDC order than reversing it, and using a hand diagram is even better!

If you play in games where this is not what happens, you will be disappointed. Better to manage your expectations.

I might have liked to respond to msjennifer, but by putting her reply inside Wayne's quote, not only has she made it look as though he said her words, she has also ensured that clicking on Reply in her post doesn't quote anything.
-
His partner claimed it was not forcing.

A thought occurs to me: I don't know North, but making a wild guess from her name makes me wonder if her first language might not use indefinite articles. If she had been trying to say "usually does not have one four-card major", that would have been a lot closer to the truth.

I'd double 1♠ or 2♠.

I've known ACs in the EBU ask for advice from TDs as to the law on many occasions. I've also known at least two TDs who post here express their concern as to the legality of what the AC seem about to do. ACs seem to welcome it if it's done in the right way.
-
No doubt that was her intention, but it doesn't help anyone to present your own personal bridge logic as partnership agreement.
-
It strikes me as odd that the AC consider that the diamond play is not related to the infraction of misinformation. However bad a play it might be, it only seems to have happened because of the explanation given by North, which was not the same as the information given by South, and which seems to be something made up by North with the intention of being helpful.

Not by breaking tempo at that moment, no.

I don't think it was a conclusion, it was a statement of fact given in the original post, although perhaps the wording in the more recent post was not as clear as it might have been.

I thought that for people who play these methods 3NT shows 15-17 - weaker or stronger hands rebid 2NT.

I was tired, last hand of the night

These two statements seem contradictory. -
Is this a claim or concession, and how should it be resolved?

And North's comment was a suggestion that he do that. -

No, I don't. I just don't see it. Consider if it all works as intended and speeds up play. Does it do so by making everyone play their cards faster but play the hand out until the end? Not in my opinion - in fact in the immediate term they may even slow down while they process the new information - but once they have done that and if they are satisfied with it they will... curtail play. So I think it's a suggestion that play be curtailed. -
Finding the right contract

I've played 1♥-1NT as forcing with spades and 1♥-1♠ as a forcing NT type hand with up to four spades in a Precision context, so that 1♥-1♠-1NT shows four spades as well as 5+ hearts, and it works well. But I can't imagine it being nearly as effective if I had to put all the weak & invitational hands with five or more spades into the 1♠ response too. I suppose you play 2♠ as a WJS, so that will take care of some of them, but I'd really like to be able to play in 2♠ when responder has a weak hand with five spades and opener has a 3514 hand, without risking the three level when instead he has 1534. -

To what end? -

But the order of the suits means it's not really the same. How would you find a 5-3 spade fit at the two level without risking ending up at the three level when you didn't have such a fit? -

Do you really mean GF and not F1? How do you distinguish your weak or invitational hands with five spades from those with six or more, at a safe level? -

I think it's quite likely that if we asked North why he made the comment, his explanation would include something like "to save time". Since the only way it could save time is if it shortened the play period, it is entirely consistent with suggesting that play be curtailed. -

gordontd replied to VixTD's topic in Simple Rulings
No it doesn't. It's not defined or explained in the Laws and so it has its ordinary meaning. -
Sometimes they do it because they haven't got a partner, or because they were a little late to register for the tourney.
-
How would he go about that, if that were his aim?

Is this a suitable case for a weighted ruling?

I can see how you've been given that impression by one poster here, but I don't think that's true.
