  1. Success rates to be a bit better than 36% - J10 tight is good enough too.
  2. Yeah, it's a really clever idea to open your long strong suit.
  3. There is damage, and by ruling like that we would effectively be telling South that it's ok to continue to do this, which it is not.
  4. I don't disagree with you giving him 13 tricks, but I don't see anything in the wording of Law 70A about "if he had played it out". The problem with this is that in the kind of situations where people make claims, they never would play it out.
  5. I'm not sure - I used to use it frequently, often being the substitute myself - but it did coincide with the new bit that allows you to let them play on and decide later whether to cancel the board.
  6. There used to be in the old laws:
  7. So 'meaningless' was not actually a quotation?
  8. I find this puzzling. Would you explain what you mean by it?
  9. In what way does standard TD practice differ from that?
  10. Sounds like you should be talking to your team-mates about responders' rebids.
  11. Maybe, but I learned my Walsh from a North American.
  12. I think you are confusing 1C - 1M - 2C - 3D with 1C - 1M - 1NT - 3D.

What kind of a ruling was that?
  14. I don't think I've ever had rhythms, circadian or otherwise, that signal I should wake up at 6 or 7am.
  15. I agree with the rest of your post, but I can see no reason why this should be so.
  16. I came to this thread expecting it to be about Apple's recent reorganisation.
  17. I used to find 5am was the worst time. Then it all got a bit better (or perhaps I stopped noticing how bad it was).
  18. Yes. The YC one had five sessions of over four hours each, with a break of about half an hour between each. 24 hours from start to finish.
  19. I think it is pretty standard these last twenty years, though there are probably still some who play it the traditional 15-16.
  20. We used to hold a 24-hour marathon at the Young Chelsea every 18 months, with big prize money and players from all over Europe. I played in it five times and directed it three times. The standard format was 56 pairs in an all-play all movement of 165 boards, half-hour breaks between sessions. It was very popular and over-subscribed, but gradually interest waned (perhaps as everyone got older, and 24 hour bridge on the internet became available), until the last one (which was won by gnasher and his partner) only attracted 18 pairs, and we've decided to wait until there seems to be sufficient interest before holding another one. Hopefully your event will be able to re-awaken some of that interest and attract some of the players who used to enjoy the YC one. In particular there was a group of Swedes who regularly flew over to London for the weekend. Good luck!
