I think Justin already made the case for double. For me it's a takeout double; partner will imagine 5314 shape as the typical shape, so we are not so far removed from that. We do have aces to make up for the trump in case partner passes. We might miss by bidding 4♣, e.g. if partner is 2533 slightly too weak to bid 2♥, then he will guess which black suit to bid (or pass 4♣, ouch!). Even if partner passes with 2434 and a trump trick, then that's not necessarily bad (looks like the will take 5-6 diamond tricks plus one or two outside), 200 or 500 is pretty good compared to playing 4♣. And in any case, if partner does take the double out we are ideally placed - we can raise 3♥ or 4♣, and pretty much show our shape with 4♣ over 3♠.

Really? I don't. And even if the message is ineffective I still prefer it to voting for a moron. First of all, voter turnout in the USA is lower than in any other democracy that I know of, by a lot. Second, have you ever heard the term "voter suppression"? Yeah there are people out there who want to win elections on purpose by decreasing voter turnout. Do you think they will be scared by the "powerful message" of the success of their tactics after they have won the election? Third, yeah there are morons in Congress. But to change that the best thing voters can do is every time there is a vote, to vote for the less moronic candidate. Why is special interest money so powerful in the US? Because politicians are corrupt, or because in any election there is a huge chunk of uninformed voters whose vote get swayed by millions worth of campaign ads? Why do morons get elected - because the other candidate is also moron every single time, or because voters vote for whoever looks prettier, or has a nice accent? And anyway, even if two morons are running for the Congressional seat in your district, there is still a lot at stake as the winner will, most of the time, vote with their party, and the two parties have fundamentally different opinions about what government should do (or whether it should do anything).

I think the American electorate has been trying to send that message for many years. I haven't noticed it's power yet.

We are deciding between bidding 3H and 4H. Opponent's wont bid over either bid. Hence it doesn't matter how many tricks the opponents will make. Hence the law is useless for our decisions. QED.

To me it is: 1C-2C: 100 1C-2D: 80 1C-3C: 20 1D-2C: -1000 If it's strong enough to jump to 3♣, it's strong enough to reverse (especially with such a good side suit). -
Agree with Adam, this isn't even barely close for me.

If 3♦ is either a game try with length, or a cue bid (possibly short) with slam interest, surely it is alertable? But anyway, Kathryn, nobody really plays this - if you want to try for slam over 2♥, you either bid a long side suit (ostensibly a game try, but can also be a slam try) or you splinter.
-
If you can still count it, I vote for double on the first (and hope to carry some people along) and for 3♦ (3NT second choice) on 2.

Kathryn I would never play transfers over their strong NT. It's just extremely rare that you have a two-suiter that has the strength to force to the 3-level. I think just Landy is better than what you describe. -
Why does everyone in this thread want to insult Josh?

diamond opening + club rebid in comp

OR if you play Western Cuebid like most people, cue with 3♠. That's not a legal bid after opponents bid 3S. Not even Western legal. -

1♣ what else? -
I bid 4♠, or 4♥ if you play texas transfers in this situation.

Nice point Kevin, even though I don't think this hand is the ideal one to make it. -
LOL. The Mikeh-hanp debate was whether to double with 5=1=3=4.

about XYZ and similar methods

One solution is to have opener break the 2C->2D puppet with hands that have 3-card support for responder's suit and are minimum. Then you can have all your invites go throught 2C, as you don't need to distinguish between 5/5 and 4/5 invites. -

Best way to play the trump suit?

It sounds like you should ruff with the 10, picking up Jxx or Jx with LHO. -
There is nothing wrong with that but you still need a bid for the 3-card limit raise. You would really prefer to show this at the 2-level rather than the 3-level (a bigger chance that partner is minimum after the takeout double), and the double actuallly gives you the room to do that without losing anything; that's why it's typically shown by XX followed by a raise.

I think peachy meant to say that if you do away with the money deposits, then you don't have to deal with the accounting and handling of them.

Yeah 7N.
