I agree 100% with everything Phil said here, and bid 1♠. It's worked really well, especially since you're ruffing in the short hand usually... Unless they lead trump, then you drop everything and RUN!
I'm just lazy sometimes when I type :) I don't have much experience playing Barbu though... Only occasionally after the evening session. Nobody in my family plays :(
I chose 3♣, this is a nice problem though. I generally prefer to err on the aggressive side with hands like this, it's worked pretty well for me so far.
I thought this was a clear double the round before, and a clear 2♠ call now. We don't want to unilaterally suggest hearts, especially facing a partner who was under pressure.
Yeah I'm having a few second thoughts about that :P I thought my hand was AKJxxx AKxx AJx -, I think 4♠ is probably enough now, no way partner can have exactly what we need
Is it bad that I just upvoted that? I had a period of 3 or 4 days where everything matmat posted I thought was amazing (not that his other posts are not, just these were exceptional), and I found myself upvoting everything he wrote!
Partner probably has a bunch of small hearts, and is expecting one more trump from us. I think I'd bid 5♦ to start. Partner needs to have the ♠AQ and ♣A, and probably a diamond stiff... But given his bidding this isn't too unreasonable. I'm going to pass 5♠ though.
