    RIP

Bettie Page...at the ripe old age of 85.
  2. If you can pardon yourself, why was Carter ever president?
  3. [hv=d=s&s=saxhxxdajxcakqjxx]133|100|You open 1♣ (natural system), LHO overcalls 1♥, and partner bids 1♠, showing 5. RHO passes...your turn.[/hv] And now for your encore...
  4. Check the Bridge Encyclopedia.
  5. If playing with a good , long term, partner in general, I really want to know what a minimum game force hand by responder looks like. Yes, I can always upgrade or downgrade based on fit, just let me know what a minimum game force hand looks like in general. 2h if partner opens lite 3c if partner opens sound. Your partner probably opens something like 85% of her 12-point hands and 15% of her 11-point hands, using reasonable judgment to evaluate them based on intermediates, distribution, and prime values.
  6. I'd be inclined to rebid 2♠ as opener with a 3-5-4-1 minimum at matchpoints. That's why partner will rebid 3♠ with three of them over 2NT; he's got extras and will accept the invite. I, as "partner," will bid 2♠ at my second turn with three spades, rather than 2♦; not 3♠ at my third turn over 2NT on the given auction.

    The End

So are "Blind Side" and "Moneyball."
  10. Regarding "provability," I think a mass study using any of the major personality profiles correlated against specific zodiac signs, or "water/fire/earth/air" signs and revealing no significant variation would be easy enough. There might not be "proof," but there's got to be a lot of "supportability."
  11. I'd identify myself as a "skeptic" and suggest that instead, if there's someone in the group who really believes in astrology, what might be more interesting is to have that person discern each member of the group's zodiac sign from his/her personality.
  12. Just for future reference, what's the technical difference between "citing" and "parroting"? I'll be very sad if this thread dries up while we wait for BBFers to conduct and publish their own firsthand research. I can see undercutting the quotations by noting that they're a relatively small number, but does the fact that they've previously been compiled and put on the same webpage really make them any more or less credible?
  13. It depends on the system. In partnerships where I play Bergen raises, I play them on over a double. If anything, I think the double improves their usefulness; responder is less likely to want to make a natural jump-shift (weak or strong) in a suit the doubler has ostensibly shown, and RHO is more likely to come in at a lower level.
  14. What's 5NT (instead of 5♠, not in response to 5♠)? Edit: I mean, in those partnerships where 5♠ would ask for specific kings. I meant to trim your quote down to the middle line.
  15. In a cuebidding sequence (in my partnerships, anyway), both sides are in a cooperative mode; they're mutually exchanging information until someone knows enough to set the contract or at least give up on more, at least from his view. In contrast, when someone bids keycard either earlier in an auction or by breaking off a cuebidding exchange, that partner is taking the lead role and essentially putting himself in the best position to judge what's going on, if he's given information (or in other words, he's assuming captaincy). Partner's either asking or telling about spades in an effort to get to something above and beyond 6♦; per the fact that he's assumed control by bidding RKC, he should be asking. My spades are worthless, so I'm bidding 6♦.
  16. This treatment has some adherents; it's called "negative free bids." If you're playing this, then a double would either be a garden variety negative double, or a signal that you actually have game forcing values (after you bid against over partner's minimum response). Negative free bidders are in the minority, though.
  17. Any Indian food suggestions?
