  1. 4s unless at adverse. 1s then 4s shows a hand too strong to open 4s. that's certainly not what i think i have by a very large margin.
  2. it's possible to play both ways. where i'm from it's standard for this to show 4 spades and 6 diamonds to play in 3D (a strong hand with diamonds would bid 3D and hope to get spades in later), but as i understand it, in America, for example, it's common for this to be forcing with spades and longer diamonds. on the internet it could be anything.
  3. south, meet pass card. pass card, meet south.
  4. that it's a pivot teams is pretty reasonable evidence that they had no agreement.
  5. you shouldn't play this against a weak NT. by playing this method you're effectively saying you won't investigate game.
  6. people shouldn't talk a constant stream of shite and troll the forum with endless nit-picking either, but sadly these things happen. when they happen and make me look like a dick by association though it's too much.
  7. as this thread is becoming a little embarrassing for british people, i should point out vampyr is american, not british.
  8. crowhurst was bad 30 years ago. nowadays it's so bad i doubt half of the forum have heard of it.
  9. yeah i bid 5nt. floating the double with no diamonds would be pretty weird though could easily be a winner, not least because my random starry partner most likely has a penalty double which he could't bring himself to pass with.
  10. a ak and a singleton isn't a good thing. 4441 shapes are very bad. i'd pass very happily, at any vul, but especially given the all vul stated. as for the seond one i'd pass too. why am i so desperate to play 1nt vul that i'm adding points to my hand?
  11. that's bollocks. your hand isn't strong enough. partner will often float the double.
  12. partner must be showing a good hand for clubs. considering how much we have in hearts and clubs [our 2 suits] and how little we have outside, i can't see the desire to rush to 3nt. kx kjx xxxx axxx is a perfectly likely hand with 3nt off and 6c gin i'd prevaricate with 3s.
  13. well you could jump to 3h on the next round, but some might consider that a bit of a stretch on a 7 count, even a very good one like this, especially as some play it as forcing. 2h on the next round isn't 'support', it's preference. that would be a loathsome sequence on this hand. you would be showing a bag of crap like kxxx xx xx qjxxx, when your hand is about 3 tricks better. bidding spades also won't help partner judge. you have a holding which actually plays very well opposite shortage, whereas partner will be valuing fitting minor honours.
  14. if you're happy rebidding NT on such auctions with no stop (waiting for partner to check for a stop on the next round), it's better to open 1c to save space, in particular because if partner responds 1 diamond you can raise and if partner has a club fit, he can raise.
  15. this really isn't a contentious hand. east forgot to bid.
  16. i disagree. both hands are quite closely defined. you don't need loads of invitational bids. if you have a crappy heart suit you don't want to play a partscore in a weak 4-3 fit, especially when the strong hand is getting tapped in the 4th suit. i'd expect something like axx xxxx jx qxxx.
  17. well it's a good hand for acol (yes, some exist). 1s-2c-3h-4s-4nt(ideally 6-ace as you've shown a double fit) etc
  18. game try. you've got acres of space to investigate and get out.
  19. pass. you've got a terrible spade holding and opps haven't shown a real fit.
  20. if you double partner is likely to pass. if you're ok with that, double. if you would ***** yourself waiting to see dummy, pass. personally holding 1.75 tricks and no spades, so declarer can lead towards a modest doubleton in dummy, i would be terrified.
  21. methinks you might want to query your own bidding first. 2♠ and 3♠ were both rather odd.
  22. obviously north is on the silicic equivalent of crack
  23. the answer is yes. if you're playing a weak no trump, and have something close to 0, 4th hand is likely to have a penalty double. by transferring you make it, on the whole, more difficult for them to extract a penalty, even if they play double of the transfer as showing a hand which would have doubled 1nt. this is rather scoring and vulnerability dependent. at teams it's often best to take your medicine in 1nt. but at pairs you're often getting a bottom for a moderate penalty, say 500 against 430.
