Another questionable slam
wank replied to antonylee's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
south added more than an ace to his hand - north doesn't need ace of spades to cue 4h. having taken a rosy view as to his opening bid (it's not a 2c bid as far as i'm concerned), he can apply the brakes (just raise 3 to 4 - failing to cue doesn't deny a control) and leave north to plough on with the right hand. this seems like a recurring theme after your previous effort. -
i've played with 3 players from recent open teams and we've played normal stayman and smolen every time (i don't direct system). personally, i've never played 3c 5 card stayman and consider it to be one of the more useless conventions.
-
3s is an amorphous slam try for hearts (similarly 4h over 3s). 4c/d are natural with spades. 4nt is quantitative. 4s is whatever you like - voidwood?
-
it's a simple game. 1nt denied a major. to make partner's hands contain 13 cards he perforce has a minor. you bid 2c to see if that minor is clubs so you will make them trumps. this has nothing to do with rescuing partner though. you're just describing your hand to find the best fit/contract.
-
south should cue his q of c. could his hand be any better for diamonds after a 2nt bid?
-
of course north has to bid slam. south has overbid if anything.
-
'assures' is a bit much. you don't know where the king is. if the king is over the jack, you don't have a second trick after all.
-
lol if you think the opps need to have 18 points to open and respond, especially with a raise, you need to get out a bit more. to the op, you need a better hand to bid here. partner didn't bid at the 1 level, so he's either got diamonds or a paucity of points. opposite a weak hand with a fit, you'll be outgunned (opps can outbid you) and opposite a hand with diamonds you will find yourself scrabbling around for a half arsed fit instead of defending the opps in their half arsed fit.
-
because you have the jack in dummy which is likely a trick if the queen and ace go together on the first round. you're left with jx in dummy over lho's hoped king.
-
south was minimum for his call and 5c can still be made.

gib needs work in responding to takeout doubles

it should cuebid and correct 4h to 4s to show spades and clubs rather than punting game in a 4 card suit. -
Five level decision
wank replied to trevahound's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
passing is woeful. 5h should be a choice of major considering you didn't bid originally so i'd go for that. i would have bid originally though. -
4h. even this could would well be too high (800 with no slam on) but they're unlikely to take a penalty from 4 when they've got a spade fit. if they do happen to have a slam, 4 is the magic number with pre-empts for getting them to miss it - advancer often makes a heavy 4M bid to avoid risking the 5 level.
-
no i don't. a hand with the right shape but too weak to act over 1c can act at the 2 level to protect, but it's too much at the 3 level imo.
-
doubling would be totally idiotic. that you bother to ask this question means you seriously need to reevaluate how often you're bidding in similar situations. if your hand is the wrong shape to double 1c, how can you possibly have the right shape to double 3c for takeout with a silent partner? in fact, as it's impossible, double should really be penalties.
-
just 5. partner seems odds on to have 0 aces and there's the 4th spade to worry about.

Very Common Bidding Problem
wank replied to broze's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
you have to bump everything up a level. 3h bids are now 4h bids. 4h bids are now cues. you might go off in 4h sometimes, but you've given lho a problem too and, obviously, you have less space now so bidding isn't supposed to be perfect. -
you are very wrong. i suggest you read a book as this is quite basic.

Very Common Bidding Problem
wank replied to broze's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
it would be an obvious 3h bid at any form of scoring. that it's white at matchpoints makes any other bid terrible. -
if you had 5 hearts you would just bid hearts again.
-
Obviously pathetic not to invite game

Do you take the push?
wank replied to whereagles's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
2s is gross -
Rebidding a new suit below 2 of opener's after a 2 level response, e.g. 1s-2c-2d is played as forcing (but requiring no extras) above perma-beginner level. As you can rebid in a forcing manner, you don't need to jump, so 3d can be used for something else, normally a splinter for clubs. Rebidding in a higher ranking suit is indeed a reverse, showing 16+ (you shouldn't open at the 2 level just because you have 20 points, even if you are playing strongg 2s). Reversing opposite a 1 level response is forcing. Reversing opposite a 2 level response is forcing to game.

Bidding is very very bad. Basic rule: if the idea of getting raised is sickening, don't bid
-
no it's not. east has a game force on the first hand.
