  1. i'm curious which other behaviour you'd like to ban people from doing in the privacy of their own wherevers because they can't be trusted not to do the same in other settings. sadly you won't be reading this to reply.
  2. because in real life i don't talk to my friends in a manner which would be permitted by bbo. perhaps you employ a different lexicon to me. that's fine, but if my friends and i happily engage in a more coarse discussion in a private setting (and you can't get any more private than a private message), is it anyone else's business?
  3. can't this be turned off for private messages between people who are mutually BBO following, i.e. friends? i don't think it's bbo's job to tell me how to communicate with people with whom i have real life relationships. i suspect because the staff are largely american, the bar is set quite low in terms of what gets filtered.
  4. no spade wastage (the ace isn't wasted). no way to identify that.
  5. i expect it's something to do with the extended (trump squeeze) menace against west. he needs to keep 2 hearts perforce, not only 1. we'll assume he knows the heart count - east will give it honestly.
  6. it's all clouded in secrecy. i don't have much faith that anything is actually done. i reported someone who was incredibly obvious - overcalling 5D on a 4 card suit and hitting his partner with 6 card support for example. it would take me all of 30 seconds to try and convict this person. that person is still playing several years later.
  7. i assumed this 12 figure had been previous 'expert' advice from a different player.
  8. 1h can be easily 17 and some 18s. his expert advice (15) was bad. your expert advice (12) was worse. doubling shows 3+ cards in all unbid majors, and tolerance for any unbid minors (ideally 3+ but 2 isn't a crisis), or any hand too strong to overcall (18 or 19+). by doubling you have no sensible bid over partner's 1S bid. it could easily be a 4-2 fit. in fact partner would have every right to bid at the 2 level with 4 spades. you can play 2H as that strength if you like (and yes, 6 cards). that's fine. restricting it to include only hands with a side singleton/void is pointless.
  9. i found it gob-smacking that this hand couldn't get to 5D. had i accidentally only bid 4 the first time i would be delighted to get another chance over 4S. at both tables this hand (in both cases held by some variety of pro) only bid 4 then defended. 5D is cold. 4S is one off, but fortunately at my table (i was the hand which passed throughout) the defence was worse than the play and it got let in so we still won 10.
  10. All vul imps 3d from lho, 3s forcing from rho, 4h cuebid from lho, 4s from rho. Xx Kxxxx Xx Aqxx
  11. X Ax Axxx 10xxxxx Love all imps. Weak 2d from p, pass from rho. Your go? Lho will bid 4s if poss. If applicable, do you stand it?
  12. it's a matter of agreement. if you play that 1S promises an unbalanced hand with clubs and spades, you bid 1NT. if you don't play that way, you bid 1S. people from different bridge cultures consider one way or the other to be standard.
  13. it matters not a lot. in ye olde-fashionede bridge the ace was the standard lead from AK and king followed by ace was used to indicate a doubleton (and hence highlight that you wanted to ruff later).

sadly it'll be the full $39 for me - i played in the vanderbilt last time - but thanks for the replies.
  15. i called the director on him for opening 1NT and backing in with 3D with 3-5 in the reds after a 2H overcall on his left and a slow pass from his client partner. for all the sympathy i got from the director and the appeal person, i might as well have been impugning their belief in their god.

i'm off to this. is the blue ribbon thing restricted entry?
  17. are convention cards required in turkey? in many of the places i play they don't exist. i have played in turkey and i didn't have a convention card either and noone commented.
  18. not one of your more believable efforts i'm afraid
  19. too weak to overcall originally = too clever to overcall later once you've found they've got a misfit and when they now have a penalty double available.
  20. a load of xenophobes and other ignoramuses screwed me and my descendants. why would anyone not be bitter about that?
  21. west can introduce hearts over 3D - he's already denied 3 - and it would leave open the prospect of 3NT. nevermind i didn't see the 3S bid. then i suppose he can bid 4C to offer a choice.
