  1. Sometimes the auction starts 1C by Pard 1S by you, and rebids of 2N, 3D, 4D, 4C, 2H and such create an orderly and neat follow-up. The opps may insert a x, and maybe even a competitive call, such as 1C, (x), 1S, (2D),... and now you have your support doubles and cuebids as well available, plus some idea of where the missing HCP's lie. If you choose to give this "order" up with a highly-unlikely Christmas-seeking redouble, you frequently end up with a mess, and there is no doubt this auction and the variety of follow-up interpretations have become the forecast mess. But at least we have an interesting thread and a little excitement  (PS: "Mess" reminder: Serious Player 1: "Agree with jtfanclub, 3D is a stopper ask" Serious Player 2: "A splinter in support of clubs or notrump?")
  2. "and I'm fine with a redouble..." and presumably fine that surprise surprise we have a huge thread of folks disagreeing on strain follow-ups. "Oh it must be Christmas redoubles" that have low percentage likelihood of "sticking the opps" often convolute the strain, and after some years of these surprises a new tact might be rewarded accordingly.
  3. Yeah yeah Thanks for all you do, it's free, it's volunteers unpaid, etc... and despite MatMat's ON TARGET comment that started the thread, there are surely many enjoyable astute wonderful (and appreciated!) commentators. That being said, a Pet Peeve Post: Those of you commentators (maybe a quarter, or less) that simply turn off your chat with the stock "I am busy now if it's urgent contact an admin" or such message infuriate me :P
  4. I dislike the tape delay the most as well also... the ability to identify and find LIVE events is too much a chore. Without a reliable "menu" or schedule, as might apply to an NFL or MLB game, you have to sit through loads of prelims and schmaltz, and sometimes guess what's on or what channel to watch. Ex: I must have watched Japan vs USA softball 4 times on different channels, because they played twice with similar scores, and I wasn't sure what game I was watching! (Then again, i am duhhhh-mb more than most.) ALSO: At least 3-4 times I went to NYTimes Sports to see current MLB scores, and big result headlines were too blatant to squint at, so I learned Olympic scores and results I wanted to avoid seeing. I understand the next Olympics from London, because of the worse time difference, will be especially hard for USA watchers.
  5. A splinter in support of clubs or notrump? Well clubs OR hopefully it's not too late to find 4-4 spades! Why did I not start with 1S?
  6. What was pard's hand (that passed 3C)?
  7. I sure wish I had started with 1S iso xx... if pard has something like AKxx Axxx void AQJxx or such, seems like 7S makes but not 7C. But I really have a hard time thinking what 3D instead of 2D means for sure at this point. A freak? a void? I love my hand and would like to suggest spades. even though it's catch-up for failure to bid 1S earlier. I am tempted to torture pard back, with a 5S call, just in case we belong in spades, and if he bids 6s, raise to 7, else support clubs.
  8. Ahhh, the Beijing Myopics! sorta catchy, eh??
  9. Seems like there was a REQUIREMENT to bring up (via TD call best?) - under law 75d2 - that there was a misexplanation. (Before opening lead, by dummy, or as defender, after completion of play.) Seems the TD takes charge and all ethical obligations are then resolved, but it would be both unethical and a violation not to bring it up, no?
  10. "Really disagree with this" strongly agree with J-LoL I mean, if for example you psyche a cuebid to get a favorable lead, what's in it for the B/I other than a "lesson learned". (Sourgrapes don't count.)
  11. You sometimes see these rows and rows of polite but applauding kids with yellow rubber balloon things being waved at somewhat obscure events like rowing, Belarus vs. Samoa, or such. I figured they were given free tickets as a state-sponsored field trip, and think it may be done more than we know (but obviously not ping pong India vs Spain (guy is Nbr 2 from spain btw).
  12. You mean World-Class as on BBO, or?? LOL. Anyway Guy from India is ranked Nbr 1 in India. I guess that is sort of world class, maybe? Oh Its only a first round match, was wrong about that also, sorry.
  13. If there really is such a thing as a choice of games cuebid, then 4H is for me now. (I do have 4th round controlled anyway)
  14. Hmmn, IND is INDIA not Indonesia. (Not that in itself explains the poor audience. The commentators did in fact just remark on the poor attendance, saying it's not always "this poor".)
  15. Can we assume when partner alerted 2NT, the opps asked and he explained it as a forcing spade raise or said Jacoby 2NT raise, at that juncture?
  16. Just watching some 3:30 AM (EDT) table-tennis from Olympics (USA channel) Late event match between a guy from Spain and one from Indonesia, showed the stands at times, all of maybe 6 specs there (I guess the PRC kids with their yellow plastic wands were all at dinner) anyway maybe thats why not televised much, although I wish it were,
  17. Thank you Jonathan, I would go back and edit my inaccurate spellings, but then your post might look like a psyche!!
  18. I am not sure if newer guidelines have been issued since 2004, but the instruction book for club directors of sanctioned games covers the subject fully and in depth. Part of it: NOTE TO CLUB MANAGERS: Clubs should regulate the use of uncontrolled psychs by saying that the burden of proof will be on the player, if he makes more than two psychic calls per session, to prove that he is not using excessive, frivolous or unsportsmanlike psychic bidding. Disciplinary action (not score adjustments; these should be made only when the result was affected because the partner may have allowed for the psych due to previous experience) should be taken against a player whose bidding does not conform to these regulations. Other aspects of these official guidelines, adjunct to 2003 laws for clubs (ref: http://web2.acbl.org/documentlibrary/clubs/cdHandbook.pdf ) include a directive to automatically investigate a pair after 3 reported psyches in any one session (to make players prove hands were "special cases" not random.) Additionally, random psyches "to creat action", affect the leaders, help certain opps, or "take advantage of inexperienced players" are in fact among many aspects of psyching expressly prohibited by ACBL.
  19. Wimpy Pass, Boy I must be getting old (and Justin too!!)
  20. Maybe Justin will fill in for Josh? He certainly has the "young" part covered!
  21. If I were Meckwell (oh how I wish!) and I wasn't "chosen by the organizers" I would be quite miffed and rightly so, especially when compared to some chosen partnerships. If Meckwell "declined" it means the prestige of this event has a long way to go, as this pair is the top quality and top in entertainment/show imaginable and inarguable.
  22. In a short mini with many casual or pick-up partnerships and a clock, it would have much merit if you allow this convention to require the players to provide a defense.
  23. One (popular) way to look at it is that 4S shows a VERY good hand (as of course most know you don't preempt over preempts.) Once you accept that, how can it be right on most days to let the passed-hand pard of the weak 2-bidder steal the hand in 5D undoubled? On this hand I choose x since I have more than 1 diamond but think it's very close, as my cards seem to be working for pard and he probably has less than 2d himself.
  24. Red vs white at matchpoints, "Partner may have taken the push to 4♥" seems to be an expectation of making (against opps who understand doubling and +200) -Perhaps my major error (if I made one when I bid 5H) is considering this to be "voluntary" so-to-speak rather than "competitive". Is that what everyone else thinks too?
