Interesting. It sounds a lot like Euchre, which is a popular game here (especially in Michigan).

Cool, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. At least at first, unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll have any students who even know the rules. I'm not sure that I know what 500 is. I was thinking of teaching "mini-bridge" which is just learning to count HCP, and the hand with the most HCP is declarer and gets to call the contract after seeing dummy. And yes, I hope they do just have fun, and learn to play as an aside.

Hi all, I've decided to start a bridge club at my new college, and seem to have enough interest for a couple tables. I don't think any of the students (or professors) who will be showing up will have played before. I have access to the "Learn to Play" program, but I'm wondering what advice you may have about how I should run the 1-1.5 hr sessions. Any suggestions on what I should teach? I must start at the beginning, of course, but any suggestions of order and content are welcome. In particular: 1) I'll start with the card play...I figure just the rules, counting, and maybe finesses to start 2) what system should I teach? I don't want to overwhelm them at all, so I want it to be mostly natural. I was thinking standard american, or 2/1 with a basic NT system, and not much else. Does this make sense? 3) What am I forgetting? I'm thinking that after I get them playing, I'll do a 15-20 minute lecture about something new every week, and then have them play, but any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Ben

Even more so, you'll enjoy his new "what if" series. It started strong, but has had some weaker weeks: What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light?

Thought that this was relevant. http://xkcd.com/1108/

I have a feeling that someone may soon have to modify the "notice of thread/post moderation" thread. This will lead to an unfortunate recursion which will lead to the end of BBForums.

I'd marry pass, f--- compete, and kill pull.

I like to think that I'm somewhat in touch with modern slang and trends....I have no idea what the content or intent of this post was.

Take it out OR Leave it in

Pass is pretty bad. East has exactly what I expected when I picked "bid 2 spades." The main flaws towards passing in my eyes: 1) The heart suit isn't that great, and is under the heart bidder. You can expect 2 tricks in it at most. 2) The rest of your hand is flat with no defense. You can expect your honors to contribute 1 trick, at most. 3) Your partner has a heart void, and 40(54) shape, he'll be doubling with almost any reasonable hand here--doesn't necessarily have aces, could be kings and jacks--can't count on him for 2 tricks defense, let alone the needed 3 or 4, his hand is offensively oriented. -
The suit to bid is clear...

I bid 1♥ because I doubt I can make 4 if partner can't support me somehow, and there's still a good chance I can buy the contract for less and get a plus. -
I try to put down with the following priorities: 1) The suit least bid by us (and not dummy's longest) on the left 2) Alternating colors 3) The led suit as far to the right as possible 4) The higher valued cards farther from declarer (I don't mind too much when dummies do the opposite, but it can be distracting)

Whatever, upvotes can't really spam my interest that much--it's when someone is actually trolling that's an issue.

These are two things which do not bother me. I used to mind double negatives until I read the sentence, "She couldn't not run." It makes different logical sense than "She could run," and conveys extra information without being grammatically incorrect. Swearing can also be done with very effective use while being grammatically correct to convey meaning in a unique and interesting way. I'll refrain from presenting examples here.

"Hopefully people will learn to stop mixing up adverbs and adjectives too," he said hopefully. That one drives me nuts also, and NOBODY gets it correct.

I'm of two minds in 0-299 games when it comes to hitching: beginners hitch for reasons beyond anyone else's understanding, so it's hard to get any information from a beginner hitching; however, one should enforce the rules early, so people know them later--beginners have a bad habit of taking advantage of this stuff and should be taught not to. In this case, I don't know what my partner's hitching could possibly mean--it's just as likely he stretched to double, but then didn't know what to do next and has just bid what he thinks we can make, with no extra strength. I'm passing, but I don't know that I'm constrained to in this environment.

Agree with all this, especially in a 0-299 field. I expect at most 1 other pair to be sniffing a minor suit slam, and will just take my avg + rather than swinging for a top at this point.

All one must do is notice the difference between subject and object--not memorize rules.

She's their token liberal, I'm surprised she wrote it this pointedly though.

I've never once heard of an educated person condoning this ear splitting usage. I have heard them mistakenly do it, but not when thinking about it actively.

How does 1D-2S address the question Timo asked about 1H-2S?

Perhaps those of you in England aren't as familiar with the hilariously astute Onion, "America's Finest News Source."

The article I saw said that they would. I dunno if Hamman will try to appeal that court case now and get is $7.5 million back, but I bet he's looking into it.
