  1. I'd like to give 3rds/5ths a try but I've never been able to find much on it. Can someone give me a brief summary of how 3rds/5ths leads? From xxx, xxxx, xxxxxx etc, Hxx, Hxxx, Hxxxx, Hxxxxx.
  2. Without the XX I think I would have bid 4♠. Pard should have a good hand since you could have nothing. After the XX, I guess I'd settle for 3♠.
  3. If 1♦ promises 0, perhaps 3♦ should be forcing anyway (perhaps even if it's 2+). However, since it isnt, then I'm forced to X, raising 3M to 4M and passing 3♦.
  4. As Effervesce says, what else can you do? If you bid 2H it could go all pass and you lose your fine D fit. If you raise Ds you may have lost a possible H fit. There is really no other choice apart from x If that is how you play NFBs, then that method is asking for disasters. Give partner the option to pass 1♠x while you know you have a 9-card fit?? I would just force this hand to game with a 3♥ FJ. They obviously dont play fit-showing jumps, or this would not have occurred. Without a 3♥ FSJ, what is your bid? X or 2♥?
  5. This is a sticky situation. Passing or bidding 2♥ may be right, but you'd be guessing. I'd bid 2♥ as I think (could easily be wrong) that it's more likely to improve the contract than reach a worse contract. Anyone care to find out what the odds are of opener having 3 clubs vs 1 heart?
  6. At the bottom of the BBO program, there is a 'CONV' button. Click on it, click on work convention card. This will bring up a program called 'Full Disclosure'. To start writing one, click the button 'Settings' at the top, and then 'editor'. You can then start putting in definitions of various bids and continuations.
  7. Don't mind either bid. 2♣ only promises 3 in any case (you may be 3-4-3-3). 2♣ would help find 3NT if 3NT is the right spot, while 2♦ might inhibit a diamond lead if you end up in 3NT. I slightly prefer 2♣ though, as when partner holds a singleton diamond bidding 2♦ makes it more difficult for him to evaluate his hand.
  8. On this particular hand, I doubt the opps have the strength to bid over a 2♥ bid, or heart shortage to balance over it. The most likely result is playing in a 5-1 heart fit.
  9. Yes, the theme is similar to the first. Maybe look at it again? :(
  10. Playing negative free bids, what else can you bid but X? Unless you have fit-showing jumps on your card...
  11. 4♥ rebid? And I was thinking I was an optimistic overbidder... 3♥ rebid is enough for me. Heck, I don't mind 2♥ rebid.
  12. I assume you're passing? The probability that partner has a four card major is 52% - just enough to tip the favor for garbage stayman for me. It's for hands like these at MPs garbage stayman was invented in the first place.
  13. This treatment is poor, imo. Roger and I play them through 7♥, which I think is clearly superior. It beats my neg/responsive doubles to 7NT though.
  14. 2♥ for me, but since this is posted I would not be surprised if RHO actually meant the X to be a diamond raise.
  15. They used to play 2♦ as minimulti, and 2♠ as a bad minor preempt. They now again play 2♦ as 3 suited short diamonds, 3CM possible.
  16. Even the aggressive Zar bean-counting method does not open this hand as 1♠ (24 Zar). It qualifies as an opener in a strong club system.
  17. He didnt redouble-it was a takeout double of the 1♠ overcall. He's forced to X, as they play negative free bids, and bidding 2♥ is a weak hand with long hearts. With 5-5 in the reds and a good hand, partner is forced to double with the given methods.
  18. Assuming multi, if partner is a moderate to sound preempter (by nature or seat or vul), then I want to be in game. 4♦ asking partner to bid their suit in this case (or 4H p/c if you do not play this). If partner is an aggressive preempter, then 2NT then bidding game if max.
  19. The Zar bean-counter would open this (27 Zar), but I'm playing with the field and passing this one. Especially since we play a strong club system, and thus partner opens light.
  20. Without any other info, we play attitude on A, count on K. So 2♦ for me.
