highly scientific slam auction
effervesce replied to Apollo81's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Will the other table be in 6? If no, then bidding 7 is silly. If they could be, then I'm bidding 7. If we're off an ace, they could try to cash the wrong one. -
Prefer 1♠. Don't like opening two-suiters with 2♣ unless they're VERY strong.
-
Whoa 25-0. I'm flabbergasted :)
-
It can still make double-dummy if west doesn't lead a diamond. Play off the top hearts, ruff a heart. AK spades, top clubs, ruff club, top spade, give up a spade. East is endplayed to concede the diamond position. *Wonders if playing the hand like above is the right declarer play, rather than playing to set up a diamond for a heart pitch and 3-2 spades*
-
Agree with double. Bidding a suit is too unilateral, and if there's not fit you're screwed.

True, shapes in moscito end max at 4C-so you'd pretend the hand was a 6511 type hand. I think after partner has bid 1♥ bid after 1♦, showing extras, is sufficient cause for responder to show shape above 4♣. The 1♥ bid shows a typically 19+ point hand (12+ relay points), and with your hand you're hardly going to stop in a mere game. If you don't want to have shapes resolved above 4C, you'd have to pretend the 6106 was a 5116 or 6115. Eg (1) 16+ (2) gameforcing, 6+ AKQ points, not 5440 type shape (3) Relays (4) spades only OR clubs and spades (5) spades and clubs, 5+/5+ (6) 5116 OR 6115 (7) AKQ point ask (8) 7 AKQ points (9) denial cuebid ask (10) two A/K/Q honors in spades, two A/K/Q honors in clubs

[EDIT]-sorry misread the play. Other posters are right-heart can't cost.
-
Is partner a good player? :) If yes, then XX.
-
3♣ for me. Just too big a chance partner may have a decent hand for slam purposes. If p responds 2♥, It's closer-partner may still have the perfect hand, but you can't really play in 4NT, so 3NT will usually be the best spot. So i'll bid 3NT after 2♥.

I notice this topic has been pinned- the link to the game returns a 404 error-could you return the game to the link? Otherwise it's a bit silly to have this topic pinned.
-
Out of interest-would anybody bid 6♦?

Can you find the worst bid?

At this vul, I'm going for penalties and passing. If they were non-vul and us vul, I'd bid 3NT (we play 2NT here as 4+ spades limit+ raise). Playing standard, reasonable bids are pass, 2NT (nat, inv), 3NT, X. I suppose you bid a minor suit, which partner raised, bypassing 3NT? Or you bid 3♥, which partner took as a spade raise, ending up in a 5-1 fit? -
Partner needs THREE defensive tricks in his own hand to set. Looking at my hand, that would most likely be in the form of trump trick and two club tricks. However: Partner's Kxx may be finessable, we may have no diamond tricks, and for partner to have AK clubs is not likely enough for me to pass. In any case, the risk of a double game swing is too much. I bid 6♥. You may also be cold for slam (even grand). They may also bid 6♠ over 6♥. If the saying goes six-five come alive, what's six-six?

The J's are practically useless. I pass.

I'm curious- why did you decide to keycard rather than AKQ or AK point ask and denial cuebid? Especially with a void.

1♠ and 1NT are both ok. However, vul vs not it seems less risky to bid 1♠. That said, I'd still bid 1NT. I hate X-it's certainly not the shape for a takeout double.
-
As a penalty X/lead directing X? Possibly, but not likely.
-
I pass. Partner could have anything down to a yarborough with a singleton heart (as is certain on the bidding). Partner won't be sitting 4♥X with a heart singleton.
-
4♠. If they bid only game, I'll let them play there. Any slam/grand slam bid by them I'm sacrificing over (unless they're bidding a grand in diamonds).
-
Club for me. The bidding has indicated LHO has 4 card hearts. Partner probably has 5-6 spades but I'm not leading the spade K into what could easily be AQxx. Leading from Qxx is horrible too.
