  1. no. the hands were correct, it's just me half sleeping (ah, and also must have been alt-tabbing between other games). This was the last hand of the day...lol that's why i said it was fluke... actually i felt strange that this could make... but could u reach 3N in other ways...except being drunk?
  2. Thanks for the responses so far. Now we come to what happened to my table... B) Preempting 2♠ is not surprising here, but what could happen if we didn't preempt? With some fluke bidding (that's what I thought at least :P ) We found out the best contract here for NS was not 2♠, or 3♠, or 4♠ (a ♥ lead could easily take you down, as in the majority of cases) It is... 3NT(N)!!!  Here comes the auction and the play... [hv=d=s&v=b&n=s643hk65d65cakqt9&s=skt9875h74daj84c5]133|200|Scoring: IMP West North East South - - - Pass Pass 1♣ 1NT 2♠ Pass 3♣ Pass 3♦ Pass 3NT Pass Pass Dbl Pass Pass Pass H8 H4 H2 H5 HJ H7 H3 HK S3 S2 SK SQ C5 C4 CQ C2 CA C3 D4 C6 CK C8 D8 C7 S4 SA S5 SJ HA DJ H9 H6 HQ S7 HT D5 D3 DA [/hv] Comment plz, I was North btw...
  3. Btw, doesn't "classical teaching" requires two of the top 3 honors to make a preempt? What do u think about this requirement?
  4. A special note was that "Go down in 4♠" here does result in a quite large IMP loss contrary to intuition that this might be a "common" overbid - about 6-7 for 4♠-1 and 8-9 for 4♠-2 One tricky thing was 4♠ (South declarer, of course) does not necessarily go down, although in the score table there are at least 5 4♠S-1ers. The reason was West might be mistaken to lead ♣ instead of ♥. Facing a ♣ lead, declarer can play clubs to pitch ♥s immediately afterwards and 4♠ will make, probably with an overtrick as well! In fact, in the scoreboard there is one 4♠xS= and a 4♠xS+1... Now this is getting more complicated...leading us to another question: will u lead ♣ or ♥ as West against a spade contract? How will the bidding affect ur action?
  5. Just a hand on MBC... [hv=d=s&v=b&n=s643hk65d65cakqt9&w=sqjht932d972cj764&e=sa2haqj8dkqt3c832&s=skt9875h74daj84c5]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Both sides have 20 HCP... If u were South, would u preempt 2♠? Facing S's preempt, would u now raise 4♠ as N? or what would u bid?
  6. lol speaking of cheating, i'm really half-suspicious of that at the time of playing. Glad that there's some reason for this bid...thx all for ur advice In fact, my p left the table in fury after 2 tricks. 4 people entered the E seat and they all played for < 1 min and left. North kept calling South to claim but he didn't so this drggged on and on for at least 10min.. (thus ruling out the angry wife phenomenon :) )
  7. I was West. The following was what NS held in one hand. [hv=d=e&v=b&n=sk8ha843d754ck985&s=saq764hk9dakcaj73]133|200|Scoring: IMP Bidding W N E S - - P 1♠ P 2♣ P 6NT P P P Opening lead: ♦3 Result: 6NT+1 +12.2 IMP to NS[/hv] After south's response of 6NT, I made a query. His response was "21 P". His profile provided no bidding information. Any reason for this bid? What do u think is the ideal bidding sequence here? Additional note: All pairs who missed the slam lose IMPs. There are, however, only 2 tables that bid slam on this hand. The other was 6♠+1, 11.6 IMPs and they at least bid less surprisingly than this one...
  8. should be me who should say sorry, copied out from a lin file and typed in sequence, thus resulting in clubs changing into diamonds, now corrected.
  9. You hold: [hv=d=e&v=n&s=sk754hkdq6cakj965]133|100|Scoring: IMP P 1♣ P ?[/hv] LHO deals, p opens 1♣ in front of u, what do u bid? 3NT? 4NT? 1♠? 5♣? or others? EDIT: typo corrected :)
  10. This is a hand I just played as south. Really interesting hand imo. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=s85hqt975daj8765c&w=sq763hak864dckjt6&e=saj42hj32dk92ca84&s=skt9hdqt43cq97532]399|300|Scoring: IMP Bidding: W N E S - - - P 1♥ P 1♠ 2♣ 2♠ P 4♠ P P P Opening Lead: ♣5 Result: 4♠E-2 +3.33 IMP to EW[/hv] After bidding 2♣, p passed, and I dun have the guts to bid any higher. I led the ♣5 against 4♠, which p ruffed immediately with ♠5. I was hoping in my mind, "Hearts! Hearts! Hearts!" And there comes the ♥9, I ruffed with ♠9. After 4 tricks of cross-ruffing, declarer was -1. He was apparently too shocked, and made one further mistake after taking down my ♣Q - led the ♥3, which I ruffed with ♠K. Down 2. However, we still lost, in IMPs. Take a look at the traveller, there're lots of crazy results... X's as well as XX's. http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/hands...1322557-5786679 What makes this hand more interesting was that there was no viable contract for EW, but there's one for NS - 4♦ can be made, although that also gives EW IMPs. What do you think about this hand? How can you and ur usual p bid this hand? What would u and ur usual p do in ur favourite system, both as NS and EW, as declarer or defender? This hand is just complete anarchy...
  11. [hv=d=n&v=n&n=s42hk74dktckqj852&w=sa5haq82dj9632ct9&e=sqjt63hj965d8ca63&s=sk987ht3daq754c74]399|300|Scoring: IMP W N E S - 1♣ 1♠ 2♦ 2♥ 3♣ 3♥ 4♣ 4♥ P P P Opening lead: ♠4 Result: 4♥= 9.3 IMP to EW[/hv] I was West, the declarer. After this hand, we're surprised at the 9.3 IMP we've got, and even more at the fact that this is the only contract bid by the EW side. http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/hands...9661738-5761263 As you can see from the traveller, there is no other heart contract by EW on other tables. In fact this is the only contract (and also the only successful contract) bid by EW side. There are only a lot of ♣s by NS, and surprisingly large amount of NTs (made or set) by NS Is there anything extraordinary about this hand so that 4♥ is so hard to reach? Is 5♣ possible by NS? Also post-mortem GIB says 4♥ can be set to -1. How is this possible? Opinions welcome
  12. Thanks for the fast reply... Being a beginner, I didn't know this kind of forcing bid before :P That should explain what's happening... p.s. This hand was never completed. After the declarer left, two ppl have entered the table and both left after seeing the hand for 2 seconds. Then my p (south) asked for a redeal. Although I wasn't the pair playing that 3♥, this hand troubled all 3 of us for some time afterwards...
  13. This was the most puzzling play of a hand i've ever met so far I was north holding ♠53 ♥AK8542 ♦942 ♣Q4 and I was the dealer. I preempted 2♥ and the bidding went on West North East South - 2♥ P P Dbl P 3♣ P 3♥ P P P When it comes to the second round for west to bid, he bid 3♥. I thought it was some kind of convention that I dunno, and passed, until east thought for an exceedingly long time, and then also passed (!). South obviously passed. At this moment, the contract was displayed... 3♥ West Everyone went into confusion In the chat, West said "????" East doesn't respond, he was dumbstruck I also said "????" Amid the confusion, the computer asked me for the opening lead. I couldn't hink of anything better to do, so I drew trumps and led the ♥A Dummy only has 2 hearts...and declarer played ♥7 from dummy, and then left out of fury East said "What was that 3♥ about?" Further investigation revealed this was what the full hand was [hv=d=n&v=b&n=s53hak8542d942cq4&w=sak86hq9dakj5ck93&e=st97hj7dqt6ct8752&s=sqj42ht63d873caj6]399|300|Scoring: IMP Contract: 3♥W Opening lead: ♥A[/hv] Anyone knows what's happening at and after the 3♥ opening? I haven't got a clue!
  14. first of all, thx a lot for all previous comments i just doubled hoping to cash 2 high spades and the ♥A, but now i could imagine the disaster of partner possibly bidding 6♣, or declarer making 5♦ btw, some of the other results are really strange and are just defenders making mistakes... like 4♥N
  15. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=sj7hk952dakqjt75c&w=s852h643d98cakt92&e=sakqt4ha8d632cj43&s=s963hqjt7d4cq8765]399|300|Scoring: IMP W N E S - - - P P 5♦ Dbl P P P Opening lead: ♠A Result: 5♦x-1 +5.9 IMP to EW[/hv] I was east and looked forward to bid 1♠ when the bididing starts, but was totally surprised by that 5♦ (apparently preempt) by RHO and doubled him, cashed the ♠A, ♥A, and then the ♠K. The moment the ♠Q hit the table, the declarer claimed down 1. The declarer labelled himself as "expert"... What was that preempt about? Is there any possible reason to justify his 5♦ preempt? Would you do the same in his position?
  16. [hv=d=s&v=b&n=s52h8754d543cat96&w=sat843h62dj8ckq43&e=skq6hakq3daqt9cj5&s=sj97hjt9dk762c872]399|300|Scoring: IMP Bidding W N E S - - - P P P 2NT P P P Opening lead: ♦2 Result: 2NT+3 +8.00 IMP to NS[/hv] Quite different from my last post about risky bidding, this time it's a serious underbid, resulting in a missed vul game, and a serious loss of IMP to the opps too I was East, and opened 2NT on this 21HCP hand, thinking that 2NT opening refers to 20-21 HCP, balanced hand. Partner passes with a 10HCP hand... Are there any other alternative interpretations of a 2NT opener that are commonly used which may account for the pass by west? Becoz this is just a random partner from a casual MBC game... Or should I not have opened 2NT after all? Plz tell me ur opinion or the correct bidding sequence Thx
  17. no, this is not a regular partner, and not the same as the one in the 4♠-5 game i've posted, just a casual, random game at the MBC. i posted this hand here becoz this is absolutely the most shocking hand (with the most shocking bidding and results i've seen so far) and wanted some opinion on what this is all about... "buyer's remorse" of 1NT... :D and of coz i remember ur words about the 6/7 level contracts ;) thx very much for all the advice
  18. Here goes [hv=d=e&v=e&n=sk6hkj42dcqjt7532&w=sjt85h86d7542c964&e=sq743hq9753dkj6ck&s=sa92hatdaqt983ca8]399|300|Scoring: IMP Bidding: W N E S - - Pass 1NT Pass 3NT Pass 6NT Pass Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: ♠J Result: 6NT+1 +11.6 IMP to NS[/hv] I was north. Just when I thought my raise to 3NT based on the long suit (better than 5♣) was rather pushy as a signoff, the bidding has gone up to 6NT...and he made it (even though I disconnected halfway through trick 2 due to poor internet connection, as my sig says, lol) Is there any rational justification of this bidding sequence or is it just luck?
  19. hi all, 1st time here [hv=d=n&v=e&n=sa2hjt865daq9caj7&w=sk98haq742dj5ct42&e=sqj7543h93dk87c96&s=st6hkdt6432ckq853]399|300|Scoring: IMP result: 4♠N - 5 +7.3 IMP to EW[/hv] the bidding sequence was North East South West 1♥ 2♠ 2NT 3♠ 3NT Pass 4♣ Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Pass needless to say, this terrible bidding by me and my partner (both beginners) resulted in a catastrophic 4 card trump fit, and thus the down 5 but I just wanna know what's the major mistake made? is it made by north or south, and what the correct bidding should be thx a lot
