Actually , I use this opening in a 5 card majors , multi context to avoid opening 1♠ with minimal values (which in my opinion is a looser especially at MP when not playing a strong club). So 2♥ is 5S4H 9-11HCP , the sort of hand you want to open but could easily overbid if you open 1♠

Obvious 1♦ at this vulnerability . Might be tempted by 5♦ at favourable. 4♦ would not cross my mind.

Is this a clear cut decision

My hand is too good for 3♥, x could work out very badly so i'm left with 2NT (showing good 3♥ raise 4+trumps with shortage even if not explicitely agreed I would expect my partner to figure it out) -
lol . i assumed this was the question . good reading test

I must say that at the table I would have played ♠T on the first trick; however it is unclear what this is supposed to accomplish (unless we cater for partner leading low from KQJxx)with 3 spades in dummy. Playing our lowest spade gives partner a chance to figure out the situation. Barring that my clubs would be smith and it is indeed a good thought to signal positively with the jack or 3 spades (especially when one has no entry). Very tough

We use 2NT to show 6M4♣ (14)15-17 HCP which we cannot describe otherwise in our version of Gazzilli (1M-1x-2♣,2M-3M being for instance 6 cards+ strong GF); all strong hands (including bal 18-19) go through 2♣. 1M-1x-2♣-2♦-2NT is GF semi-balanced (16+)

Pass, not close for me . Guess I now qualify as a conservative bidder. Bidding will be an occasional success when partner has a big heart fit but will lead to a lot of minuses (phantom defenses/ tip off declared on how to play the hand; so i guess pass is even clearer at MP)The 2 queens are really minus factors as is the like of intermediates in the heart suit. Same hand with spades , I would definitely consider bidding.

Dbl. I trust partner to take dbl as take out even if undiscussed. We possibly belong in 4♠ but why should I decide for my partner ? I am actually more worried about 5D as partner may pass with some 3244 or 3253 but taking the plunge to 5♦ is too big a position for me

how do you play...1N (2H*) 2S

Interesting. Without prior discussion I would assume same as over 2♣ showing majors : dbl heart stopper, 2♠ Spade stopper (3♥ and 3♠ show shortage ). Lebensohl on -
Think 1 is better except for really top level partnerships . There are also a lot of tempo issues associated with 2 which are difficult to ignore even if you practice active ethics.

I think this is definitely a style issue. I would pass both hands facing a passed hand (if the partner had not passed, you need to play italian style to be able to bid 1♥ on the 1st). The alternatives (1♥ on the 1st, double on the second) are more than likely to draw a roadmap for the declarer on how to play the hand. I realize this is extremely conservative by today's standards (at least on fora)

while it's true those AEF tourneys have sometimes little to do with bridge, I think the whole point is to be able to play 6 boards without having to look for a partner (who might be a BBO expert anyway) whenever you feel like it.

Voted no blame . ***** happens. Great success for junk 2♠ opening North might bid 3♣ instead of double as he can not handle the 3♦ response but South may have a spade stack , 3♣ could be a lousy contract and it buries the hearts. Difficult not to act with spade shortage but while this would be clearcut with H and D may be pass is correct with the actual hand. I have some sympathy for South's pass : he rates to have 2 spade tricks an a club , can hope for 3 red tricks from North and the alternative 3♦ albeit not final is not really attractive

Clearly D. the french system has many flaws but not this one : 2NT definitely shows 18-19 (for most players 3NT actually shows 4 card spade support unable to splinter); with (15)16-17 you are supposed to rebid 2m (3 cards ) and over the likely 2♥ preference rebid 2NT. Opening 1NT is another common approach but far from mainstream (one style with significant following is to open 1NT with a 5 card major only when you have 3 cards in the other major)
-
I would not overcall 2♣ with this hand (not my style but works well on this hand) and i'm afraid 3♣ would definitely show at least some heart tolerance . Therefore pass is clear cut for me which is not a success looking at both hands ( no double no trouble) . I will reconsider if 2 ♥ get doubled (even then not so clear to run as partner figures to have a decent heart suit and possibly a heart diamond 2 suiter ; clearer to run at MP where the 2♥ is more likely to be some sort of prebalancing
-
Pass over 2♣ at this vul (would consider bidding if vulnerable) nless partner is an al roth's disciple. Over 2♠ choice is between a chicken pass or a dangerous DBL (values implying club misfit). I think DBL is the winning long term bid unless we agreed with partner that 2♣ can be quite shaded.
-
it probably depends on what are your other options / follow ups if you do not open 2♣. For me only #3 is an obvious 2♣. I'll take my chances with 1♥ on 1&2 (and expect to be able to desribe my hand as I play 2♣ relay/Gazzilli over 1♥-1x). I would not dream opening #4 anything but 1♣
-
I think no blame at MP. North is within range for 3♠ and South has a marginal 4♠ call at MP (singleton D does not look good even in a weak Notrump system). I think 4♣ by North is an overbid although I would definitely bid 4♠ over 2♥ showing 5S4H 5-9 which would be standard in some fields .
-
3NT which should probably show this type of hand (cannot be natural although partner may have different ideas). Partner may not be on the same wavelength but still the contract could/should have some play
-
The answer probably depends on what 2♠ means; for me , it shows a mimnimum hand with 3S. Therefore , North has boxed his hand and has no business declining to cue bid diamonds / show diamond control. the key question is then what to do over 4♥. BW may be the practical bid although xxx in trumps is scary , 5♦ might in theory be better but could confuse the issue. That's said I would have bid 3NT over 3S to show bad trumps but do not know whether this is mainstream practice globally.

Just to add yet another scheme 2♥ transfer to spades (5+ spades or slam try in diamonds or spades). Upon completion, 2NT cancel transfer (opener bids 3♣ upon which 3♦ is diamond slam try and others Sp slam try) . Otherwise 3♣ shows 5SP+4C, 3♦ 5S+4D, 3S choice of game 2♠ transfer to 2NT (5+ H or to play 2 or 3NT). Same as above . 3NT to play (does not say anything about H) 2NT tranfer to 3♣ (weak or slam try in clubs or hearts ) 3♣ mini puppet stayman (3♦ 1+ major, 3♥ no majors ). Over 3♥ 3♠ ask opener to bid 3NT , 3NT shows 5H4S 3♦ 5S+4H 3♥ 54 minors H shortage 3♠ 54 minors S shortage 3NT 55 majors
-
I think it is either 2NT (right on values , my hand is worth 18+, but misdescriptive) or 2♣ intending to rebid 2♠ if partner does not pass .2♣ is a clear post mortem winner . Sorry partner, thought we were playing gazzilli
-
dbl in north is possible as a passed hand but i'm ok with pass ; however I feel prebalancing with 2♠ in South is clear cut so for me most of the blame goes to south
-
4♥ showing S+H . Obviously the hand is not pure (I'd rather have 4S) but this is probably the last opportunity to describe my hand
