What it comes down to for me is that the web clien tries to have too much on screen at a time by default. Results, fiends, etc. By default in the Windows client you get your table, and the chatbox. Everything else is either a popup when clicked or essentially tabbed. (The mini table list for instance). by contrast the flash is far too busy looking, and then you've got the browser window around it to just to make it even busier. Also Flash vs Native GUI widgets doesn't help either.

I'd put it at about a Sarah Palin level.... I'd certainly never pass with that, clear 1♠.
-
Can't you get it from myhands?
-
Best of all worlds would be a new native client written against a crossplatform GUI library. QT for instance will allow the same code to be used on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows Mobile, and a Nokia smartphones.

Those selling browser based thin clients claim that the cloud is the way of the future. I remain sceptical personally. I think it's very telling that all of the google apps on my android phone are native apps, NOT browser based, and that's a pretty beefy device by mobile standards.

Maybe the best thing to do is a hybrid? Something like this... break the field into 5 groups of 4, each group plays a 3 round RR within their group. Top 2 from each RR group going into the swiss, which could be say 5 rounds. Basically a nice way of pairing the field down to those in actual contention, and then swissing them.

Yes, totally for me. I basically hate everything about the web verison. Hate the way the cards look, hate the sounds, hate the UI, hate that it runs in the browser, hate the keyboard layout, hate that lobby display isn't real time, dislike the colors...it's literally inferior to me in. Not saying the Windows client is perfect, far from it in fact, but it's much more stable, readable, and less distracting. I hate how "soft" everything looks in the Flash version. I know this sounds drastic...and it is. I feel very strongly about this. If BBO were to drop the Windows client I would likely seek another place to play. The user experience on the web client is that unpleasant to me. I know some people like it just fine, but yea, not me.

Since when is 1♠ a "forced bid" on this auction?
-
Actual auction ATT was as follows: 1♦-1♥ 4♥-4♠ (RKC 3014) 5♣ -5NT (Specific King Ask) 6♦-7♥. Certainly got us there, but I didn't know for sure diamonds were running.
-
Why? What does this accomplish? Do I care if I'm sitting with "acehigh" or Joe Schmoe? Names mean nothing of people you don't know.

What's your favorite system after weak twos ?
TylerE replied to bluecalm's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
The best thing you can do for your game is stop thinking in terms of points. -
For What? Misbidding? For not wanting to play the hand and suggesting a score.
-
Misbid, not fieled. What happens if west doubles 2♥ for penalty? He should know that either something is fishy or that 2Hx is going for 1100... But in any case what law has been broken? EW received proper information, and I don't see any fielding. Stern words (possibly a PP) to South.

Rate These Conventions
TylerE replied to gurgistan's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
That's how I rated mine jilly. That's why my score for G3NT is so low... it's great the once a year it comes up. I still play it though as I can't come up with a better (GCC legal) use for the bid. -

Btw, I'd rate plain BW as more like a 6. Lebensohl - 10 Ogust - 7 Sandwich 1N - 3 Cappelletti - 2 DONT - 6 Gambling 3N - 4 Smolen Transfers - 9 Texas Transfers - 10 Namyats - 3 -
So if you had held J KQJxxxx Jxx Jx partner would have been perfectly happy? :)
-
3 or pass. People bid entirely too well over weak 2♥ these days.
-
Are self-splinters really standard these days? I've always played the 4 level jumps as strong distrbutional hands.
-
Ugh, it's monday morning. Yea, scratch the limit raise. Doesn't really matter anyway...south basically utterly failed to play bridge.
-
One thing to consider robin, if you can get the source pdf file for the books that you desire, you could go to one of the online self publishing print-on-demand sites, like lulu.com. I used them to print some system notes once... ~80 pages was like $10/per, with no setup fee. That's with professional binding, a color cover, etc. For a few hunderd pages it would be maybe $15. If you have pdf software you could combine several pubs into one file and have it printed as a single volume.

Bidding Versus Play
TylerE replied to gurgistan's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
If I could have mastery of either effortlessly I'd go with play for sure. Bidding can be learned by rote if it comes to it, especially palying a system tailored not to depend on a lot of judgement...play not so much. -
100% to south. Imo after 3♦ I'm forcing to slam with the south hand unless found to be off two keycards. Also if playing standard american/SAYC south should just make a limit raise immediatly, then North can probably drive to slam.
