How To Make East Declarer
TylerE replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
IMO W should just bid 3♥, trump fit could hardly be better and even if E has garbage it shouldn't be a complete disaster. E then has an easy raise to game. If you're going to play weak NT you have to be prepared to go for an area code at the 3 level once in a while. -
67% But One Disaster
TylerE replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would bid 3♠ as W over 2♠. -
Maybe so, but the gain is certainly non-zero and you'd be hard pressed to find many other ways in this game to get free matchpoints. Even if it only gains one match point every 5th session (and I suspect it is worth a bit more than that), that's essentially free since the extra mental effort is zero after a short adaption period.

What would a double show in your system. I'm not normally one for stoppers, but this is one situation where I absolutely detest bidding NT without one. Great way to get to a no-play 3NT, while we have plenty of ways of getting to it later and more methodically.

100% East. West described his hand accurately, East wasn't paying attention. Even if W is void in ♥ this could easily be a one-loser trump suit.
-
You can when you bid 1N with 2-2 in the majors. N bid totally reasonably for someone expecting an 8 card suit in one his two suits, quite possibly in both.
-
I really don't understand your purpose with these threads. Guess what? When you bid like a drunk masterminding fool GIB doesn't bid very well.

how penaltish is this double?

Strong hands with support start with a cue. -
1NT from another planet. Maybe another solar system. 100% south.
-
Why on earth should N double? With WvR there is no compelling reason to talk them into running.

I think I was 4+-4+-x-x when I Xed the first time (X for me there absolutely promises both majors) -
Well, I mean, they are playing Montreal Relay. That's usually clue number one...

Good IMPS Average

BBOSkill is the dumbest thing ever. It does not properly account for strength of competition. It rewards bunny bashing. That is all. -
Agree with Fromage, X=♦.

Average + for both pairs (16C2d) and PP to the previous table (90B3) IMO, I wouldn't allow the board to be played. Any result of an action taken by players at the 2nd table is immaterial as you, as director, essentially put them in an impossible situation. As both pairs at the 2nd table are the non-offending side, they should be given the benefit of the doubt and not put at any sort of disadvantage. To even suggest a 12C1 ruling at the 2nd table is obscene. Even if I didn't rule it at the time, I would adjust to A+/+ via a Director's Error ruling (82C)

Not quite what you're looking for, but for about 2 years I played a system with: Canape 1-bids Intermediate NT (Good 12-15) Strong 2s (Artificial GF 2♣ (e.g. std), 2♦/2♥/2♠ shows 8+ playing tricks in the shown suit, forcing for one round with next suit negative It was playable, and we had some strong results at local tournements, and a source of much mirth and amusement, but not what I'd play to win an NABC event. In general it did a lot better at MP than IMPs - game bidding could be a bit iffy at times, but it did very well on partscore deals.

One, brief direct bridge advice
TylerE replied to mike777's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Don't walk the dog. E.g. with a weak distributional raise for partner's suit, bid immediately to the maximum level you feel comfortable with. Don't bid 2, and then bid 3 and then bid 4 (which will invariably get doubled now that opponents have worked out their strength and degree of fit.) -
Plus the alert chart isn't really a chart.
-
I think I do too, but it's much closer. Like maybe X=10 1NT=7
-
1NT is a very different contract than 2NT.
-
Sorry, but 2N is just bad here. We look booked for at least -2 when partner doesn't have much, and when he does we will quite possibly be -2 in 3N as well. Even if parter has a "dream" hand like Jxx KQxx xxx Axx even 2N isn't assured, and we'll be playing 3.
-
IMO X = 10 Pass = 7 2NT = 2 The problem with 2NT, is that you need to hit partner to come close to making, and if you hit partner you'll be in a lot more than I strongly prefer for 2NT to start at a robust 16 or so, and on this auction I'm counting your hand as more like 13... Kx in their suit is kinda bad, AKQx is overvalued at 9.
-
You'd think that, but in my experience clubs are essentially free to do whatever they wish, including things like banning pysches, and ACBL will do f-all about it, as long as they get their buck a table. It's only at ACBL sanctioned tournaments that there is any real expectation of ACBL rules being in force.

Text notation for deal diagram
TylerE replied to Kungsgeten's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Best format for hands IMO is simply one line per hand, space seperated. - for a void. No special syntax, punctuation, or anything. Hands in NESW order, and a simple header row For your example hand N EW Kxx T9 xxx Q987x Jxx Jxx AJxx KTx A987x Ax Q9x Axx QT KQxxxx KTx Jx Syntax extensions: Allow //comments and also treat everything leading a line up to the first colon, and leading spaces as well, as a comment, and optional punctuation between fields So: N, EW //With syntax extensions N: Kxx T9 xxx Q987x E: Jxx Jxx AJxx KTx S: A987x Ax Q9x Axx W: QT KQxxxx KTx Jx -
