Oflekovat 6NT s dvemi esy, kdyz nevynasite
coyot replied to Miron's topic in Forum pro ceske a slovenske bridzisty
Oflekovat 6NT s dvemi esy, kdyz nevynasite
coyot replied to Miron's topic in Forum pro ceske a slovenske bridzisty
(AK v jedne levne, at ji zkusi trefit...) -
If they're not going to let me play 4♠, I can overbid to 5. By informing partner about 6 spades, I risk bidding a contract that cannot be made when I could have been happily camped in 4♠. Just look at the bidding. 9HCP in my hand, probably 10 in partner's hand... that leaves 21 to opposition, with likely divisions between 12-9 and 14-7. Do you think that the opener will bid 5♥ with a weak NT hand and only 8fit guaranteed? I really don't think so :(. Yes, he may expect his partner to have longer hearts because we're bidding like crazy, but that still does NOT justify going to 5th level with a lousy hand. I just have to disagree wit you - they WILL let you play in 4♠ more often than not - and if they don't, you're anyway willing to sacrifice against their game contract on the 5th level. That's the beauty of 4♠ bid... it can be made on total garbage with 4-5 spades and good distribution as a good save, or it can be made with good values. It just leaves the opponents in the dark.

Kdyz souper zahaji Vasi barvou
coyot replied to Miron's topic in Forum pro ceske a slovenske bridzisty
U toho posledniho bodu si nejsem jisty - co delat, kdyz partner ve vyse uvedene partii misto 3♦ rekne 4♦... 4♠ by jeste mel vzit jako cuebid, takze bysme umeli zastavit v peti, ne driv... -
No a mam 7 kulovejch a 1/2 zdvihu vedle... Jestli je partner slabej, porad je sance, ze souperi obranu netrefi a bude tam 9 zdvihu (srdcovej vynos a cerny eso u partnera mi staci :)). Podstatna informace by IMHO mela byt, ze tahle drazba vylucuje bodovou silu, aby partner neblaznil...

Do you need extra value?
coyot replied to cnszsun's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
That leaves you in a mess - you are forced to bid something you might not entirely have... (i.e. notrump rebid without heart stopper or 1444 or 1345 shapes). Possible solutions: 1) Treat a negative double as promising all unbid suits and forcing for one round. If partner does NOT have a diamond 4card, his problem :) 2) Don't use negative double in this sequence WITH spades (bid 1♠ with 4+card). I have played it this way ever since - treat 1 over 1 bids after interference just as without interference - and use the extra bids given by opponents for hands that are difficult to bid. There are easy tools to find 5-3 spade fit in these cases, the distinction between 4card and 5card of responder is not that important. -
Add me to the 1♦ club. If partner by any luck responds 1♠, 3♥ will make him happy :-). If he responds 1♥, 1♠ will show 4-4 unbalanced (which statistically discourages heart rebid... 1♠ is IMHO a terrible bid for a few reasons indicated above (lead from Kx, cowardly bidding with spade shortness, unhappy 2♠ contract against any doubleton...

I play it strictly NF - a typical "lack of better" bid. I don't like partner's suits, yet my club holding is not worth mentioning. (5-3-2-3 or 4-3-2-4 with empty clubs). On a side note, I quite like the "Lebensohl-like" structured reverses, where any bid from responder on 3rd level is GF, 2NT is relay to 3♣ (and opener that absolutely refuses to play 3♣ bids otherwise.
-
3♠, forcing to 4♥ sounds like a plan. Partner will get the idea of 11 major cards in my hand and will bid slam with spade king, game with any minor wastage. (Without the spade king or diamond ace AND spade jack, the slam is next to impossible)
-
I play the following variant of 2♣ opening: a) weak with diamonds (normally 2♦ bid) 20-21 balanced (major 5card allowed) c) 4 losers with major 5card d) 3 losers with any unbal. shape e) (some highcount balanced hands that happen once a decade) Rebids allow to find: 1) weak long suit in answering hand on a level one lower than usual (2♣-2♥ says "I have jack poo and 5 hearts, if you're the :P variant, pass", same for 2♣-3♣/♦ 2) good slams, distinguising between c) and d) variants. Now, when not to open 2♣ despite point count suggests? 1) twosuiters that can be bid otherwise. Any strong 6m5M hands can be opened with 1 of a minor - and even if partner is near-broke, the opponents usually reopen the hand for you 2) 4441 hands, unless I can see the game in my own cards. Again, open 1 of a minor and reverse, preferrably twice. An aware partner will be able to choose a good contract, usually on 4-3 fit. I would not worry about hands with two long minors (as in the example) - with 55 in minors, I want to play a minor game/slam, I don't really care that I cannot show both suits below 3NT. I don't want to seem offensive to awm, but in his examples 3 and 4, I see no problem. The 4261 hand screams for 2♣-2♦-3♦-3NT-4♠. Thus I will have shown at least 54, more likely 6-4 shape (in case partner CAN have four small spades. If he cannot, 3NT will be a likely contract). The last example - I'd never think about rebidding 3♦. In my style, this hand is perfect for 3NT rebid (although on the very high end of that bid). I know that I might miss a good slam if my p has both major kings. If he shows a major suit, 2NT from me is FORCING and if he bids 1NT, he's most likely to have 3325 shape or worse (=a ton of club wastage, two major kings quite unlikely). On the other side, I would gladly open this hand 2♣ - but not because I want to avoid bidding problems, but because this hand indeed has 3.5 losers. As for answers to 2♣, I prefer the 2♦ waiting bid that only denies hands that you need off your chest quickly (that is, weak with long suits, where you want to tell partner that you're broke and this is the only suit you like). Weak hands with bad shape are shown via the second negative (2♣-2♦-2M-2NT or [2CL]-2♦-3m-3NT).

Although I also chose to open 1C I disagree with all that you said here. I think it is very important to break rules like "never preempt with two aces" in third seat NV. If you only preempt in this situation with hands that you expect to go down 4 or 5 with then you make it far too easy for your opponents (that is, if you fully disclose this tendency). I also really dislike opening 1C planning to bid 5C over 4S. Ever wondered why your opponents always make the right decisions? Hmm... if you break rules, partner will be the one making wrong decisions most of the time. How will you look him in the eye when you go down from 7♣ doubled saving against a slam that lacks two aces? Besides, I'm using the 5332 rule, but that does not mean I cannot open 5♣ when I expect to go down 3 in favorable vulnerability... So my 5♣ in green vs. red does NOT mean "double me for 1100". Opening 1♣ with this hand with intent to defend 4♠ by 5♣ seems OK to me - because I tell my partner that my hand was too good for a straight preempt (and he won't make a phantom save). Of course it will help the opponents, too - but how often? And how often will it help my partner to reliably know what my preempt is like?
-
4♣ for me... with the club void, I have values to play in 4♦. Sure, I might miss a good heart contract and play 5♦ down 1 or 4♦ just, but, on the other hand, I might as well miss a laydown 5♦ and play instead a lousy 4♥ going down with bad breaks of the trump suit (and the diamonds as well). I want to show support of diamonds - and if partner happens to have 4 hearts and just a little extra, he WILL bid 4♥. If he has Qxx or worse in hears, I'm not going to miss anything interesting in that suit.
-
Clearly the failure to alert the 3♣ bid caused a ton of damage. Especially in this case, the missing alert made the subsequent auction LOOK very natural - so much that I don't think you can blame the defense for not asking what the bids meant. (After all, this is what alerts are for - to keep defenders from asking about EVERY bid just to protect themselves). As for the question of a club lead, alert or not... I would hardly ever lead a club after a natural auction, because East is showing a slam-headed hand based on long clubs. What would his holding be in that case? AKJxxx or AKJxxxx is quite likely - and he might well decide to hold up the first round of clubs, holding 8x against either of the holdings... With no alerts, I would definitely lead a heart as it seems that the opener holds diamonds and spades, therefore my partner is likely to have any missing heart honors. The trickiest part of the decision would be the adjust itself: Given the contract level, one might argue that it does not really matter which side to play for the diamond queen, as if the finesse loses, the contract fails... but given the club position, the percentage play would still be to play south for the queen, going only down one no matter what happens. I'm not really sure what would I do at the table - but I think that to protect the innocent, I would award 6NT -1 to declarer and ave+ to defense if that is possible... or ave -+ not to be too harsh on them. (Declaring line certainly needs to be punished for the failure to alert - and after the club lead there might be sufficient doubt about the outcome, because apart from the finesse decision in previous paragraph, there probably might be other combinations involving a squeeze or whatever that could allow the declarer to make the contract (or go down).

Implicit agreement Polish Club?
coyot replied to jillybean's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
I would say that the damage was NOT self-inflicted, but it was quite likely NOT caused by a hidden agreement. (That is, you can't expect opps in Indy to have a hidden agreement, can you? Esp. if their profiles don't mention Polish club at all.) Simply put, E/W got screwed by a non-standard bid by North. I don't like that bid at all, either, I would gladly open 1♠ with that hand as it still needs at least an Ace to make a game... Yes, E/W expected to score at least 3 tricks from the very start by two club ruffs and diamond ace, and doubled in the hope of finding one more trick in the combined hands... I've been similarly screwed quite often, typically by old ladies who gladly opened 3♦ in first seat with a side major 4 card, causing me to totally misdefend the board ;). Such is life - and I've scored a ton of good results myself in a similar fashion, making strange/stupid bids. Life is tough... table result stands :) -
I'm a strong believer in adhering to certain rules, one of which is "never preempt with two aces". This hand offers the possibility to "steal" 3NT on the long clubs and 20HCP, so I don't really want to preempt. If partner is broke, opps might still not have a slam there - and I can bid 5 clubs over 4 spades to show that I'm willing to sacrifice - and partner will know that my hand has long clubs, but is too good for direct preempt. 3rd seat preempts at favorable vulnerability should be saved for real garbage hands... the kind that you expect to go down 4 or down 5 with... 6-3-3-1 for 3♣, 7-3-2-1 or similar for 5♣...
-
Given the shape and vulnerability, I'll gladly bid 3H. Sure, I can go down a ton, but I can find a good sacrifice. Unless trumps divide badly, opps are unlikely to leave me in 3♥ doubled even if partner has a singleton. There are other benefits - i.e. when the bidding goes p-2NT-3H-x-4H-4S, I can now bid 5c to show partner that we might have a good sacrifice against opps slam as well. Of course, it's a close decision, given the likely dead diamond queen... having that queen in clubs, it would be a definite bid :(
-
No problem with 1♦. Our system defines that as 12+ HCP, the upper limit being either 3 losers or 20 balanced HCP. If 1♦ is passed, out, it's probably a good thing because there will hardly be any entry to partner's hand :( I know that I might miss a lucky game or three if partner responds with 1♥ and passes my 3♣ response - but I'm prepared to live with it...
-
I'm in the pass club... Give partner xxx-AJ10x-xxx-Axx and I've wasted a laydown game. (in other words, with the hand above, NEVER bid a game against my preempt :)) I never preempt with a side major 4card against unpassed partner - and I've never regretted it.
-
Odds for strong NT overcall (16-18) are roughly 50% (shape) * 7% (points) - 3.5%. Now, that is completely standalone probability. The real value will be significantly lower, because you will want to substract hands that: - have no or bad stopper - have good shape for takeout - have a good 5card suit. - have the opening suit too good (you will gladly wait for reopen double) Also, the HCP probability is slighly lower than 7% due to the fact that RHO has already opened. My guess is that only about 0.5% or fewer hands will actually be of the kind that NEEDS the 1NT direct bid. 16 HCP hands, which accout for almost half of the probability, can IMHO all be treated passively. 18 HCP hands with 5card can be upgraded to 19HCP and bid as takeout and then NT... And, from the remaining hands that you would like very much to bid 1NT, a good portion are these that when you bid 1NT and go down one, you would very much like to have passed :)
-
I am in the Raptor (or Polish NT, as it is called here in Europe) camp as well... I would agree that: 1) Raptor hands are more frequent than strong NT - and when used, they rarely lead to bad numbers. Passing 9 cards to partner in one bid is excellent for hand evaluation, as well, we've had a few marginal, shape based games with 4-4 major fits that would be hard to achieve otherwise 2) Giving up strong NT overcall may seem a loss, but: - if your holding in their suit is long, you can wait for reopen double from partner even with 16-17 HCP - if your holding in their suit is shorter, you will usually have shape good enough for a regular takeout - bidding double and then NT can still cover good 17HCP hands... - with 16 or bad 17HCP, you will hardly miss a game unless partner has any reason to reopen (which he usually will have if you have a good holding in their suit...) 3) You STEAL the 1NT bid more often. Your partner may quite often pass that bid and you're in the best spot (esp when nonvul - if you go down 1, they could score 90 in 1NT, if you go down 2, they could score 120 :))

HOWTO: Tournament conditions of contest
coyot replied to uday's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Since it is using port 81 instead of the standard 80, problems might be in a firewall that is very conservative. From work, I get a "timeout" on the http request, while from a unix account outside, I can reach the page immediately. So make sure you're connecting from a machine that sits behind no firewall that would block traffic to port 81. (A standard paranoid setting might well be to block all traffic except the regularly used ports like 80 for http etc...) -
The ACBL Alert Procedure contains these two statements: -- Players who, by experience or expertise, recognize that their opponents have neglected to Alert a special agreement will be expected to protect themselves. -- Note also that an opponent who actually knows or suspects what is happening, even though not properly informed, may not be entitled to redress if he or she chooses to proceed without clarifying the situation. While I realize that the ACBL does not include the entire world, and other countries than the US might have different approaches, I have yet to see anything better, more carefully thought out, or more fair, than the ACBL Alert Procedure. It is this on which I based my statements. Does that mean that when you fail to alert an artifical bid and I call the TD, he will scrutinize me, asking whether I know your bidding system? That it just ridiculous. I believe these statements are here to prevent doubleshots where the expert player waits to see whether it will be better to get an adjustment or to let the opponents bid something wrong. Typically, when I think that opponents might be bidding something wrong, I will NEVER ask about their bids before bidding is over, unless I really NEED to know immediately what is going on. I certainly do not wish to investigate whether a particular bid should have been alerted or not. And I think that any TD would have a hard time proving that I was supposed to know that a certain response was artifical UNLESS I play a very similar system. If the ACBL rules really want me to protect myself so carefully in order to help opponents clarify their own bidding, then I must say I'm happy to live in another country :)
