If P leads the A from AK (Or K from AK if that's your agreement) and you hold the qj do you play the queen to show the jack?
-
I'm doing some reading. Everyone says don't underlead a king or an ace. Kantar says don't underlead a queen or a jack. And no one agrees about what to lead from xxx, though some say try not to lead from it at all. So, What's that leave? Top of sequences? Nice work if you can get it. More seriously, how valid is Kanar's contention that you lose more underleading your queens and jacks than your kings?

how would you bid this
Badmonster replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I believe AWM too. -
I'd better be happy at the 3 level, because after the auction: 1NT-P-2C-3C/3D I expect my partner to bid 3 of a major if he has a 4 card major, with pass showing preference for the other minor and X showing preference for their minor. As long as I don't mind being at the 3 level, why not? I'm lost. I've never seen that auction. Can you explain further?

Suit combination 2
Badmonster replied to Codo's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I thought the queen because the jack isn't likely to be a problem and the odds are bettter on the finesse than the drop. I think. -
Last year I asked about this. But it's been a whole year and so, I thought I'd ask again. A couple years ago, I was taught, what I thought, was a great form of drop dead stayman - where in with 4/4 or 4/5 in the majors you'd bid 2♣planning to pass any major response. If p bids 2♦ you bid 2h and he passes unless his spades are better than his hearts in which case he corrects. Oddly, as wonderful as I found this method, the rest of the bridge world, that would be all of you, by the way, obstinately persists in not playing this. Why?

Playing to trick two
Badmonster replied to Badmonster's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Original count or current? -
Your p makes a lead, from the top of a sequence or touching honors. You give negative attitude. The trick holds and he leads the next card in the sequence. Do you give suit preference here?
-
The tables where they will not let you sit are probably not tables you'll be happy at anyway. No?
-
I've been thinking and reading a lot about hand evaluation. Most sources will talk about the negligible value of honors in short suits, but no one tells you how to really adjust. I was told that giving that solo k no value wasn't quite right. And clearly, the whole hand is going to have to be looked at as an entirety, but if we were really, really general could we try to pin this down some? How much is my singleton king worth, before anyone bids? After p opens in another suit? After opps open in another suit? How much is it worth in p's suit? What's my singleton jack worth in p's suit? What am I forgetting to ask?

Imagine partner's possible hand? Culbertson's rule says if you can imagine hands that are dead minimum for your partner's bidding that are lay down for slam you should bid slam. And people say the same thing about game. So... how do you learn to imagine p's possible hands? You know without holding things up until someone calls the director or types punctuation at you?

1M-3M Mixed raise theory
Badmonster replied to Badmonster's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
[hv=s=skxxxhaxxxxdqxxcx]133|100|[/hv] I thought it looked like a mixed raise. Was I on track? -
Documentary on bridge
Badmonster replied to nickf's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
it's >>HERE<< to now "merci beaucoup" B) Again, while I think it's excellent that we've all gotten to see the documentary, I'm worried about putting in too many places. I would hate to ruin the production company's chances to distribute the film they invested in. -
Who do you watch and why?
Badmonster replied to PaulH's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I get excited to see Justin on vugraph, and also Sabine Auken. -
Documentary on bridge
Badmonster replied to nickf's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think it's wonderful you got it up so we can all see it, but I worry that it will make it much harder for the producer to find a us market, I wrote to Andy Petersen about a week ago, and she mentioned that they are trying to sell it to US TV. -
I was reading a book from 1970 and while it's not a book on bidding it references the auction 1m-p-2nt. In 1970 2nt was 13-15. Now it is 10-12. I thought that was so strange. Not because I think one range or the other is superior, but because lately it seems the more points you have the more room you'd like to leave. And since that is the trend isn't it odd that 2nt has gone in the opposite direction?

I am sorry for your bad experience, but it takes 2 people for an abuser to hurt. It also takes a victim that accepts the abuse. Bridge is a partnership game and like marraige, there is the possibility of an abuser and the abuser's victim. If you refused to accept the abuse, it would not have occurred (or continued). You could have said something like, "If you ever criticize me publicly, or say anything to me in an insulting, disrespectful or abusive fashion, I will leave in the middle of the game, and never play with you again." In addition, there will be NO lessons during the game. Only afterwards and then only for 10 minutes, so you better carefully choose which of my mistakes to correct." What are you talking about? She quit, I think that was her solution to "stopping the abuse." Unless I am reading her post wrong, she put up with abusive bridge partner(s) for a year and finally quit bridge. I can understand that. Why would anyone play a game that brings them misery. She associated bridge to the abuse, rather than the abuser. Although abusive partners occur far too often, not all bridge partners are abusive nor disrespectful. And condoning the abuse contributes to its continuance. Unfortuneately, her story is hardly unique or even unusual. As a victim myself, I understand how difficult it is to stand up to the abuser. But bridge is a game that brings intellectual joy and challenge and I am saddened to lose a player because of some A-H. I think you make an excellent point. I did put up with it too long. (Not the whole year. I stopped playing with him, and played with nicer people. But bridge is weird. Not only do partners yell at you, opps yell at you. Opps yell at each other. There was a lot of yelling that directed at me, that I found depressing.) I think I put up with it as long as I did, because I was flattered that a much better player was consenting to play with me. Now, ten years later, and after playing online with some wonderful people, who are not only better than I, but far better than my old partner, I see that no one is that good. No one is good enough to be entitled to be abusive. No matter how good your partner is they're never so good that they have a right to be unkind to you. But Justin is right. I quit, and he never got to be mean to me again.

I tried to learn at about 33 years old. It was about a year before the internet exploded. That's significant. I loved playing spades but none of my friends played. There were bridge clubs where you could go to play bridge and no spades clubs where you could go to play spades, so I figured what the heck, I'd try it. I played for about a year, but eventually got tired of paying $8 to be yelled at until I cried. So, I stopped.

How experienced are you at bridge?
Badmonster replied to bid_em_up's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think about three. Maybe it's four. I lose track. -
Invitational Jump Shift or stronger?
Badmonster replied to Badmonster's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
You're right. I fixed it. -
In my notes on this raise, I wrote that you want a hand that will play well opposite a shapely hand without too many queens and jacks. I'm not really sure what I meant. Or why. Can someone explain some theory for me? Why are some 9 point hands a single raise and others a mixed raise?
