  1. Let's assume that we are going to play DONT, even though many prefer capp. There are two ways to get to 2s, and what I'm really trying to get a handle on is how strong is a hand that x's first then bids spades, and how weak is a hand that bids them directly? Any thoughts will be appreciated.
  2. Thank you Fred for the directional in the contract legend :D
  3. I'm curious about if you buy the GIB program, do you get updates at a reduced cost, or do you have to buy the whole program again if it is updated?
  4. Yes, I love this option. However, when watching a teaching table, (especially if you are distracted at all, or join after the bidding during the play) it can be confusing to follow. So, let's say that X is teaching. At the bottom of the screen above the chat it will show that the contract is 1nt by X. But X is sitting at every seat. It would be more clear if it included (at least at teaching tables) the position of the declarer, ie 1nt by X east.
  5. Is it possible to show not just the declarer's name but also table position? When at a teaching table, the teacher is often the player at every seat. S/he will show bidding, and then begin to play. At the bottom of the screen you can see what the contract is and who the declarer is. At a playing table this is perfect, but at a table where the same person sits in every seat, it can be a bit confusing to figure out whose contract it is.
  6. I play gambling 3n because I'm under the impression that it's a bid who's purpose is equally served by a 2c opener and a rebid. I also play it because that's what I was taught to play. However, a hand suitable for this bid comes up very rarely. I wonder though who else plays it and who doesn't and why?
  7. The problem is that it is being alerted as gerber. And my mind is too slow and ponderous to make the adjustment.
  8. I've seen this happen several times in the past few weeks. What is it that no one ever explained to me? Isn't gerber blackwood for nt?
  9. Personally, I am a huge Uday fan. He (she?) is polite, responsive and gets the job done. When I went to him (her) with an issue he (she?) fixed me up in moments. But even if I weren't a huge Uday fan, the man has said that he will restore the post sans the offensive posts at his earliest convenience. Censorship is a terrible thing. And there are, in this world, many instances of human rights being violated. It's wonderful to see that people are passionate about human rights. But railing against the injustice of removal of a post on a brige sites discussion boards will not save the world. For those of you interested in saving the world may I suggest contacting one of the groups below. I'm sure they all are happy to have volunteers. http://www.hrw.org/about/impact.html http://www.eff.org/br/ http://www.amnesty.org/ http://www.igc.apc.org/
  10. Thank you all for the excellent advice. Though... I have to say, I would like to tell the opps we're playing terrorist mosquito!
  11. How funny. This exact thing came up last night. In the end, all you can do is shrug and move on. Otherwise you'll get ulcers. And if it's not a tournament you have the option not to play with that person any more. Until you're getting paid to play, you might as well play at the tables you enjoy. Not sure if that's any comfort.
  12. My experience with bidding works this way. I learned SAYC because most online players play SAYC, it's accessable, accurate and fairly modern, not to mention adjustable, as you can add other conventions. I learned 2/1 because better players than I were playing it, and since they're good, they must know. I like it. I like the idea that the speed of your bidding conversation is directly related to how many points you have. Since playing at BBO, I've encountered all sorts of other systems. Some seem pretty interesting. Some bizaare. The really wonderful and intimidating thing is you can choose. You can choose to learn and play any one of the multitude of options. I don't believe that one system is necessarily better cumulatively, than any other (What do I know? Maybe one is) but I believe that systems probably work better for one person or another because they are more suited to a playing style. So, my question is: How do you choose the right bidding system for you? How do you know if you should be playing Goren or Magic Diamond or SAYC or 2/1?
  13. I've never played steps. I've never learned them. My theory was if STEPS were the way to go more experts would be playing them. But some people seem to really like them, and heck, maybe the experts are using them, and I just don't know it. So, I wanted to get some feedback on this convention from people who have tried both. What's preferable, and why?
  14. Most people play weak twos. My problem is, they don't seem to be playing the way I learned it. It was my understanding that if you respond with 2n they are required to respond with a feature, or a rebid, if they have no feature. However, more people I encounter pass my 2n, which ends badly. What is considered standard over 2n?
  15. Why are imps preferred over mp on bbo?
  16. I was kibitzing and a blue button with the letters DF kept popping up. Scrolling over it said deep finesse. I was so tempted to press it. What is it?
